I have the sony cyber shot 3.2 mega pixel camera (dsc-p72) and I keep getting a memory stick access error message on my camera screen.

I have the sony cyber shot 3.2 mega pixel camera (dsc-p72) and I keep getting a memory stick access error message on my camera screen. It keeps loosing all the pictures I have taken (about 50 of them)They are there, cause I view them after each Picture I take. The camera would freeze and stay open. (lense stays open) I have tried new batteries, and memory sticks to no avail. When I do get it to work again, it would only show about 5 pictures on the card. I put the card into my card reader on my computer and find about 15 pictures on there. I can get most of my pictures back by using a "Recover my Data" software program.

You might have a bad memory card. You didn't say what size card you're using but I'm wondering if it is not capable of working with the camera you have? Have you tried going into the camera's menus and reformatting the card? That might also help. All I can think is, sometimes errors like this happen if you do things like remove the card from the camera before it is done saving. If it is happening multiple times I would definitely stop using that particular card.

I am using a 128 and a 16 MB cards and I have reformated them both. They are both ScanDisk brands....You have seen this before? I thought it was the camera??? Cause that would just stop working at times and the lens would stay in the open postion, even when the batteries are out.....

Clint, Not sure how you are set up?

1. Do you have a card reader on your computer?
2. Do you have a USB cable for your camera to your computer?
3. Does your printer have a USB port to attach the camera to?
4. Are your pics on your computer already?

Either way will work, (not sure about #3?)but to go about it you need to choose which way you hook it up to your computer.

Why don't you email me and we can talk spacifics....

Hi Al,
This is somewhat confusing, and I'm having a little trouble figuring out just what it could be since you said it is happening with two different memory cards. That would point towards an error in the camera, as would the fact that the card reader can read the photos fine while the camera cannot. I have seen memory card access errors before, but it has always been an issue with the card not being formatted properly (or just being a bum card) and I don't know if I've come across it as a camera issue. But it very well could be. Because your camera is having other issues as well, that might be the source of your problem here. One thing I would try before retiring it (or getting a repair estimate) is just a plain old reset. Your user's manual should tell you how to reset the camera to factory defaults. If it's a glitch that is causing this that may fix it; if it's a hardware issue then you'll most likely be looking at repairs.
I realize that doesn't help much.

Hi Brenda,
Thanks for the response. I have tried everything I could think of. When you say the card might have not been formatted Properly, I have formated it many times. I don't us my camra much, so for me to trouble shoot something like this would be hard, since I might use it 2 times a year. My problems happen at random. It did it last christmas and again at easter, since then not much use out of it. That is why I posted here to see if anyone else has ever heard of this problem. I bought it a Circuit City and I believe it is still under it's warrenty I purchased. I called them in the spring when it happeded, and they had me reset the camera and it still did it. I guess I will contact them again cause I told them the same thing and it should be documented on the computer. Thanks for your help.

Hi Al,
It sounds like you know what you're talking about, and you've tried most of the basic troubleshooting that I would recommend. If you've formatted the card in the camera and it's the proper card for the camera (and it's not a bum card) then you've done what you should. Good luck and let me know if you find out what's causing it.

I am having the same problem Al describes. I have a DSC-P72 and it randomly loses pictures. I'll take a picture, view it, then sometime later the camera will freeze up. I have to pull the batteries out to get it to unfreeze and turn off. It may be related to having batteries that are not fully charged. Maybe the camera is not realizing the batteries are low until it is too late, but even then, it should not lose pictures. I've tried different memory cards, but no improvement. If I can't resolve this soon, I'm buying another camera - and it won't be a Sony!

I guess no one else has a fix???? I have resorted to just using my recover my data software for now..no one seems to have a fix for this...I probably will also buy a new camera in the future and it won't be a Sony either....
