Hi there,
Are you having any problems along with the camera asking to be turned on and off? Is the lens not moving properly (getting stuck, etc.) and are you getting any error codes on the screen? Let me know- I hear about this problem a lot and if you can verify what it's doing I should be able to help!

I've just started getting this same error message on my old Sony DSC-P32. All other functions are working fine - can view pics on the camera, can get to setup menus etc. Just can't take any new pics! Lens cover won't open.

You wont believe what happened to me, I have the Sony DSC-P32 and your same problem, now this is the weird think... someone told me "JUST DROP IT" and at first didn't trust but I did it (my room has carpet btw) and now it works again.

I have the PS-150 and the lens wouldn't close displaying the same error message. While I would not recommend dropping it, I just tapped the end it into the palm of my hand enough to shake it and it's no longer jammed. The problem was corrected with no further incidents.

I want to go on all the websites to help people with the stuck lens problem. I too went on the sites to seek solutions to my problem and but did not find any at the time, now I see other people have discovered a fool proof economical solution. I really like Caroline's carpet technique. I'm glad that Sophie's suggestion helped her. I would encourage all keep dropping (carpet technique seems safer) til you succeed, maybe try having the back facing down and the lens up? Hope you all succeed! Keep trying Natalie, see... it worked for Jake too!

After just over a year of use all of a sudden the lens on my Sony DSC P200 was stuck. The camera would not work. I don’t know what happened, maybe it was hurt from me keeping it in my pants pocket. If I remember right it kept telling me to turn the camera on and off again. I put the camera away in hopes to use the battery as an alternate battery to my next camera. I figure instead of spending money to send the camera out to get repaired I’d just invest in a new camera. I actually went out and got myself a new DSC W80 today attracted to the image stabilization feature. As I took out my DSC P200 to compare its battery (NP-FR1) to the DSC W80’s battery (NP-BG1) I accidentally dropped the DSC P200 about a foot off my wooden floor and would you believe the camera appears to be resurrected! I’m so excited coz I really loved this camera and I had already given up on it. So to all the people out there who don’t want to send your camera out to be repaired. Drop it…I mean literally!

I checked with Sony - cost to repair is more than newer camera cost.

Tried to open, no joy.

Tapped with rubber hammer, nothing.

Kept in freezer, nothing.

Bought a Canon Power Shot A530.

I have a Sony Camera DCS P200 and I was not happy when I saw this stupid message Turn off and on again while my lens was not moving anymore. i didn't try the "carpet dropping" but as suggested by Rich. A. I tapped gently twice the end of the camera to my plam and it works again.

Wonderful, I had the same message for my DSC-W7 after powering on and off the camera while the batteries where almost empty.
I didn't like the dropping on the carpet but I slammed the back of the camera with my hand and now he works again.

Shame on you Sony.

Thanks for the tip.

I also had a P200 with a stuck lens. It wouldn't close when the power was off and the lens wouldn't focus when trying to take a picture. Repairing it would be close in cost to replacing it. So I was willing to try anything. I left the power on while it was flashing on the screen to turn off the camera. It was flashing an error on the screen earlier, but I forgot the code. I think it was 61 or 63. After trying to power it off and on, the black screen with turn the power off and on screen. Dropping it from about 3 ft. on to carpet actually worked. After that, I was able to close it again. Thanks for the help!

I had the same problem. 'Turn power off and on again'. I had given up on my Sony Cybershot and thought I'd give whacking it a go. As suggested by so many on this site. AND IT WORKED. Crazy. I gently 'whacked' the screen with my palm and voila! Cheers folks.

Un-frickin-believable. The drop camera onto carpet worked! Mine crapped about 6 months ago and I had given up on it. I was shopping on the internet for a new camera (not Sony) and ran across this problem thread. Keep on dropping those Sony's!

Thanks so much for the hint of dropping it. My DSC-W7 works fine again.

By the way mine fell down 4 weeks ago from about 3 feet directly to concrete floor, body got a dent, but otherwise no damage. So Sony is still a got product

I've got a Sony DSC-W5. I turned it on this morning, the lens came out, I heard the lens motors whirring away and I got the message "turn the power off and on again". When I turn the camera off the lens motors whirr away a little more but the lens stays out then the camera powers off. Turn it back on again and the message "turn the power off and on again" comes up once more. No matter how many times I turned it off / back on the message keeps coming up.

Tried the 'carpet trick' - brilliant !!! Must admit I thought it was a bit of a p*ss take at first but it really does work and my camera is back to normal. Thanks very much, Mark

My god, it worked. Dropping and tapping the camera did nothing at first after 5 or so 2' carpet drops and a few hand slaps. Then I blew some air duster in and around the lens for about 20 seconds while the lens was open. Still nothing. Then 1 more good tap on the side and when I turned it back on it worked! Showed this DSC-W55 who's boss!

I had this same error occur to me yesterday when I placed my Sony DSC W150 into the Sony underwater housing (MPK-WD).
The lens attempted several times to extend but failed when the housing was closed.
(Keep in mind that the camera works perfectly fine when used normally)

I'll try to smack the back of the housing, when powering on, to see if it resolves the issue.

I have a little sony cybershot; the screen was getting these funny lines and just shoiwng white, and then I started getting the message to turnn off the power and turn it back on. I googled the error message, and found this page. Figuring I didnt have much to lose anyways, I tested the drop theroy, so I tapped it, nothing happened. Then i dropped it, it seemed a bit better, then I dejectedly, tossed it on my desk; now the screen is back to normal and the message is gone.

I have a DSC-W120 and my wife and daughter spent a few hours at the beach and I surmise/presume that the problem was grains of sand that infiltrated the mechanism of the lens focus. The camera came back with the "turn power off and on again" problem. I sought other's experience with this. RATHER THAN DROPPING the camera, ( which is a rather uncontrolled 'acceleration') I tapped it with my hands/fingers from every possible angle while turning the cameral off and on again repeatedly. Despite my pessimistic attitude, this process yielded results within one minute. I will note that I started fairly gently and increased the force of the tapping to what probably would equivalent to dropping onto a one inch carpet from a height on ~16 inches. Perhaps the tapping/dropping can dislodge the grains of sand - but remember, they're still in there - just not stuck in the gears. It's important to note that very forceful tapping can certainly cause additional injuries to your camera. Good Luck.

Wow, I can't believe how easy this was to fix. Simply smacking the back of the camera (screen side) against my leg was enough to help the lens retract after the 2nd attempt. My sister has this same camera. I sent her the info for future reference. Thank you everyone for your valuable consumer info!!!

I bought a brand new DSC-W290 two months ago, and it started displaying this message a few days ago anytime i zoomed in the full 5x. The interesting thing was that the camera worked great, and the zoom even worked great until you hit 5x, and the message would pop up. For the last week, I was just being careful not to zoom in past 4.6x, but after becomming frustrated with this limitation, I found this page, and decided to give the "just drop it" technique a try. It took a few good drops and whacks, but eventually the problem was solved! MUUUUCH better solution to sending it in for repair or replacement. Thanks everyone!

my god, I can't believe it, it works!! First, I dropped it on the carpet floor so many times it didn't work at all. Then, I smacked the camera on my palm from all dimensions, it works!! Have to use lots of force!now my hand is hurting. But it is safer than dropping in on the floor. I broke my first camera by dropping it on the same carpet floor!

When the lens started working, the color from the lcd didn't look right and It is blur as well. i thought i had one problem fixed but have more other problems. Luckly after I smacked the camera on my palm again, and taking the battery and memory card out and put them back in again, it started working normally.

Suggestion: be careful when you drop/smack the camera, don't over do it.

BTW, mine is dsc-w150. Shame on Sony

OMG! thank you so much. I started crying, because I was going to go to camp in like 5 days, and I need my camera, (i'm only 13 by the way) and my mom would never ever ever buy me a new one in 5 days, I went on this one site and it said the only thing you could do was it get it repaired, so I was out of ideas. and then I found this thread.. and I was like "dropping it?" yeah right. so I tried it because i was getting desperate, but it didnt do anything for like ten minutes so I was getting even more upset, but then after numerously dropping it to the ground and then banging it on my desk once... it worked.
thank you so much thank you so much *beams*
(: this website saved my camera's life.

I had the problem that my camera would turn on, the lens would go in and out about 3 times, and then i would get the 'turn power off and on again' message. I was really worried because i just spent $200 buying an underwater housing and having it shipped to my house in time to go scuba diving tomorrow morning and if my camera didnt work it was worthless. My camera wouldnt work last night and tonight I tried dropping it, hitting it, slapping it, and it wouldnt work. My dad knocked on the front and back as the lens was coming out and suddenly it worked. Thanks!

I was trying all that stuff- dropping, slapping for like an hour, but i didn't work. So I just left it for some time and later I smacked lense really stronger and... it works! So If it is not working- don't give up, keep on dropping and smacking. Good luck!

My camera is just out of warranty - and I was reading this - but not going to try it. My daughter went and THREW it on the floor - she saw my shocked expression and then did actually drop it on mistake. It worked. I just can't believe it. Sony - this should not be the fix... However, thanks.

Same problem as many in this post. Lens got stuck and tells you to power off and on again.

Awesome!!! I wacked a few times, dropped it a couple of time, tapping it with my palm and twist gently the lens. And it worked!!!! Cheapest repair ever!!!

Unfortunately, when my DSC-W12 landed face down it actually damaged the lens mechanism beyond repair. Ive just spent 3 days re-building it after buying a spare camera off ebay. Moral of the story, dont drop it face down with the lens extended.

Worked like a charm after dropping it off. However the problem came back after few power recycle and the squeeky noise. Smacked it hard on the screen while turn off fixed the problem permanently.

DSC-W150.

You don't need to drop. Just smack it hard on the screen while power is off.
