Hi Rajendran,

Unfortunately, this seems to be a semi-common problem with Sonys. You can find many message board threads discussing the issue across the internet (here and here, for example).

What the problem usually indicates is that there is something stuck in the lens mechanism that is causing the lens to stick and provoking the camera to give you an error message. The "something" can be as small as a grain of sand. There are two known solutions that don't involve contacting Sony. First, you can buy an aerosol can of compressed air and gently blow around the circumference of the lens housing in an effort to dislodge the problem material. Second, believe it or not, many users have had success with gently banging one corner of the camera against a hard but padded surface (like a carpeted floor or a soft wood table--something rubber would also probably do). This will often dislodge the sticking material. Don't bang too hard, though, or you might dislodge something more vital.

Hope this helps, and good luck. Also, what model Sony is yours?

I had the same issue with my Sony camera saying "turn the power off and on again". After following the suggestion of banging the camera a couple of times it worked!

After banging the camera make sure you switch off then back on and hopefully it will work for you too.

Hey that's brilliant! Spent an hour stripping a 7.2pix cybershot with no luck getting as far as the lens mechanism, and running out of time. Thought I'd look it up online and found this. (I tapped the end with the rubber cover, in case that helps).

WOW, I truely can't believe it. I was using the "banging the camera" method as a last resort. I wasted about three hours looking for some sort of magical fix. Banged it softly on the rubber wire of the USB plug and bingo! All fixed. Amazing. Thanks SO MUCH!!

Wow, I thought this was a joke but really after dropping on the carpet of my library twice...the sony camera worked. I tried the hitting on the palm and tapping the corners on the mousepad and padded places but eventually just dropping on the carpet worked out. The first time that we dropped it, nothing happened, it had the same problem, but after we dropped it the second time...it worked. Drop the sony's!!

I tried the bang theory and I did it for 20 minutes and I was about to give up, but i gave it one last bang on the palm of my hand, and it worked! Although it is dangerous to the camera and not highly recommended, but I also ran a paper clip around the space between the lense and the body of the camera to unjam or loosen whatever the perpetrator is, I don't know if it helped, but I think I had something fairly large stuck in the camera. Thanks so much.

It works. Have a CyberShot. The lens would stay out when the power went off. Would error when you turned the power back on. Removed the battery when the lens closed. Slammed it hard on the lens side. Turn it back on, was working. I love technology.

Thank you so much this really works!!! We have a sony cybershot 6.0 and the same problem started on our camera at my son's 1st birthday party trying to take pictures--thank god for disposable cameras as a back-up. It also happened again about 1.5 year later. Now we really thought the camera was broken, of course the manual didn't have this method listed, but after banging the camera corners on the mouse pad it still didn't help, so I banged it face down with the power off still no relief, then banged the camera face down on the mouse pad with the power on then it seemed to work--we got a funny noise when we powered up the camera again, but we shut it off and turned it back on and success!!! It works!!! It's a shame that since this error message question was posted back around Dec of 2006, 2 + years later it's still an issue for Sony, not sure if we will purchase another sony when we upgrade to a new camera. Thank you to everyone for your help!!! We really appreciate it!!! 8-)

getting sand into it won't be covered by any warranty so forget that avenue and persist with the blowing and tapping.

I have also got to say Thank you to those who posted this fix, it worked for me althyough i spent some time blowing it with my compressor and finally baning it lense face down a few times on the palm it worked!

this happened to us while on trip, so had to buy another one. But came home, looked up online and voilla...bang theory worked like a charm after 5 soft whacks on wall padded with mousepad. Now I just hope, my 2 yr old who was eagerly watching me does not repeat that in our absence..LOL...
thanks a bunch...

MY problem is slightly different. I turn the camera on and the green light comes on. The lens comes out sometimes. On the times when the lens comes out, the power light flicks off and then nothing. Can't take any pics.

To get the lens to go back in I have to move the control to playback; turn on the power again, which then brings the lens back in as it's on playback. It turns off by itself. All very peculiar. Playback works, but I can't take pics with it. Batteries fine. Card fine. Errr..........help?

The Big Bang Theory is not working for me.:-( I've been beating the living dailights out of my camera for the last ten minutes; on the mouse pad, my palm, my thigh, the carpet, my cat. Even used an exacto knife to pry around the mechanism in case there's a grain of sand in there (my son did take it to the beach!). I can hear the mechanism tentalizingly whirring twice, then giving up in futility... I'm ready to give up. Just need to whack my son with it a couple of times... BRB with a full report.;-)

Thank you so much to the person who figured this out!! I've been banging the camera like some crazy person for the past hour and then, reaching my final tether I whacked it about 5 times against the computer table, face down and when I turned it on it came on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOO :D This actually really properly works! xx

THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR TIPS! I was taping/banging it for an hour and it wasnt fixing itself. If your problem was like mine, where the outmost lens seems to be bent upwards and it SHOULDNT BE, then take your index finger, put it on the top of the outermost lens, and your thumb on the bottom of the lens, and give it a quick pull downwards and it should click into place!

I opened the lense and took a Q-tip and swirled it around in there with a little blowing and that's all it took-3 seconds of my time and my camera works again!! I sold my last sony on ebay b/c of this problem and had no idea it could be solved so easily!!

I had to bang the camera harder than my palm could tolerate. I hit the back of our sofa 10 times, and each time the lens moved a little bit...eventually I was able to get my fingers on it. After I pulled it all the way out, I still had to cycle power once. Now everything appears to work fine.

I have banged this camera for over 20 minutes.....nothing.....lens keep making that strange noise as if its about to turn into a transformer (nope, still a camera), then nothing. I keep waiting for something amazing to happen. I have blown the camera, banged it, and then pat it on all corners. I now feel like throwing the camera across the room, but I am sure mid throw it will flash or something prior to breaking into pieces.
Thanks everyone anyway.

I had given up on trying to get my camera which is not even a year old working. I had been trying all the pull the lens in or out, when I saw the dropping the camera on the floor. So, I tried but did not work. Then I turned it off, took out the battery, and hit the front lens as hard as I could on a book a few times, and it works! Thank you all!

Banging the camera on the corner worked for me too. I had to hit it a little harder, but finally worked.
It's a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W125.
Same error message: "Turn the power off and on again".
Thanks!

Wow--it does work! It seems like it works when you get fed up and bang a little harder than you think you should....It took about 10 minutes and finally worked after I banged it with the lens open.

Amazing. My camera again..... let's see how before I have to bang it again! lol!

The banging method worked for me, but I have to do it every single time I turn the camera on.

I REFUSE to do that.

So, my better solution is I'm going to buy the same camera at Wal-Mart, and send the broken one back and sony can eat the loss.

My Sony Cybershot was giving this error, and the lens kept shutting down. I could not believe that banging the camera was the solution. Tried banging it on my palm a few times - but was unsuccessful. Then I banged it on a paperback book placed on the table. And voila - it worked!! The trick is to bang it on a flat surface - which us not a very hard one.
