How do I save pictures by the date taken?

The camera will automatically include the date in the meta data when it saves the picture. You won't have the date literally on the picture itself, though.

I want to actually save the pictures to my computer by the date they were taken. Can it be done, now they just get saved numerically (i.e. dsc 001)?

Actually, they already are. Even though the naming convention doesn't reflect it, if you go to view, then details you will see the date and time listed. If you want to go beyond this and put the date/time in the name itself, well, you'll have to rename the picture files separately. I don't believe that there is a feature in the camera to do that.
