CAMERA WILL NOT WORK

Received a Sony DSC-P72 from a employee who was is somewhat rough on his tools.

He said "It won't work!". Anyway when I turned it on there was 14 pictures in the logic chip which I was able to unload but when I tried to take some pictures, all the lens would do is move back & forth, make grinding noises and the camera would then shut down. I asked him about this and he said that he "bumped it" and that he accidentally opened the battery door while it was on.

What can I do to get this fixed? I would hate to buy him another camera only to have him break another one. I would rather get this one fixed to teach him a lesson to take better care of his equipment.

Sounds to me like the lens is out of alignment. In a nutshell, the camera lens was jarred and gots stuck while trying to extend. A very common problem if the camera is dropped while on. Since the camera is out of warranty, the one thing you can try is to If you gently, and I do mean GENTLY push against the lens with the PALM of your hand as you turn it on, it may cause it to depress back into the camera.

But that's only if the lens is stuck in the out position. If in the in position, about the only thing you can do is reset it or turn it on/off several times, then you may have to send it in for a repair estimate anyway.

But understand that the average cost of a camera repair is around $180. As such, it may cost more to repair than it is really worth. The rule of thumb is that if the estimate for repair is north of 50% what you paid for it, you're better off taking that money and buying a newer and upgraded model.

My Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-P72 has a frozen display on the LCD display. It took new Pics while this old pic remained on the LCD. Recently it stopped taking pics. You hear it boot and the lens comes out but no light shows it's ready not will it take a pic or reset. Plus, the mode selector makes no changes.
