LCD screen won't light in picture-taking mode

Also, the camera will not take pictures, and will not shut off in picture-taking mode. I have fresh regular AA batteries installed, and cleaned the terminals.

Hmmm. This could be a firmware update issue, you should get the most recent firmware installed on your camera by downloading it from Sony. If this doesn't work it might simply need to be serviced. Sorry.
