how do you take decent picture of a hallmark on a piece of silver?

with dsc p92
place object on table
in a room with plenty of light.
in the menu set camera to spot
and the iso to 100

Also make sure you use a tripod to keep the camera locked down and prevent camera shake. I'd also experiment with lighting and diffusion of that lighting.
