best cameras for long distance pictures

I would like to take pictures on long distance objects, so I would like to buy a versatile camera that gives me that and of course the usual short distance pictures. Digital + optical zoom camera? affordable, etc

I would have to say that the Sony Cybershot H2 is your best bet. It is a versatile camera with an amazing 12x optical zoom and a great price tag around $300. Takes wonderful pictures too.
