What would be the right camera, a dslr or 35mm?

I'm a novice photographer but I'm looking for a camera that will take good pictures of the kids in sports and on vacations. I'm looking for something that will get the jump shots with out being blurry or missing the moment due to shutter speed. I don't really care if it's a manual or auto focus, I just need some help on choosing the right one with out wasting my money.

It depends on how much you are interested in learning photography. If you want to get really good results and use the camera in very different situations then DSLR would be the best option. In this case you will need some lenses too. If you decide that you will not carry and change different lenses then you should buy advanced point-and-shoot camera with all manual controls. Please feel free to take a look at advanced_cameras page. Cheap point-and-shoot camera without any manual controls may fail while taking pictures of jumping kids.

Thanks for the help, I think I have narrowed it down to two cameras with all the reviews I've been reading. The Sony Cybershot H5, or the Sony DSC-R1. I think my next step is to go and physically look at them and decide which one will be more user friendly for me.

Hi -- two final comments on your selections: both are great cameras, but the DSC-R1 is an older model and may only be available refurbished. The Sony Cybershot H5 is a more recent model that has a lot of improvements (bigger LCD, more zoom, and so on). And it costs less -- lovely!

The second comment is that when you get back from the store, make sure to buy the camera online. It's very likely that you'll save money, and (believe it or not) get better terms (such as no restocking fee, and maybe even no sales tax) from the online merchants. I personally have a form of agoraphobia (fear of crowds) related to fear of big-box electronics stores with huges crowds, long lines, and sales people whose main skill is reading the tags on the product for you :-)
