orb like spots are appearing sporatically

both inside/outside and day/night shots sometimes contain light orb-like spots. I can take 2 pics and orbs are in different places, or there will be orbs in 1 and none in the other.

Your description of the symptoms indicate that the spots are not related to dust on the lens or the sensor.

If you read this article , you will notice they are caused by flash light bouncing back to the camera from particles floating in the air. This may be dust, water droplets especially due to the rain, and other tiny floating particles.

Because these particles don't stay fixed in any particular position, you will find them in 'different places ' in different pictures.

The main cause is compact cameras have their flash positioned too close to the lens. dSLRs, having the flash at a higher position, wouldn't have so much of the problem.

Since it's so thin, one thing you can try is to take a white plastic film canister, cut the end off and then slice it down the middle. Place over the flash and it will diffuse the flash and perhaps prevent a direct assault of the dust in the air. It'll also give your subject a more even lighting.
