Hi Emma,
I have heard about this error in the past, and strangely have never heard why it happens, other than it's a programming error that will have to be repaired. People are frustrated.

One person said that a gentle rap on the battery-cover side of the camera clears the message. You may also try removing the batteries, waiting a few minutes, then putting them back in, or doing a Factory Reset using the Setup menu.

I just started receiving this error also. It seems to be intermittent, and I notice it takes a lot longer for the camera to turn on and access the memory stick, it also will turn the camera off if powered on with lens cover up and then opening the lens cover.

Hello, I also got the darn message when I needed my camera most. According to online discussions I've read, it's hardware malfunction related to the camera's lens mechanism. As usual, Sony will say it is not covered by warranty, although you and I know that we never abused the use of our cameras. I say it is a product defect, and I am actually trying to get testimonial of people who experienced the same problem. Let's go to court and teach Sony a lesson. Please email me at onlinediaz@yahoo.com.ph if you have the same problems, especially if you are in the Philippines. I will collect affidavits and statements from victims of Sony's defective product. Thanks.

I did as you said for the E:62:10 problem. I gently tapped it several times on the side of the battery and the side of the lens but it did not work. The I turned the camera on and tapped it again just slightly harder turned it of and on again and it worked. Thanks.

I'm from Istanbul / Turkey and I'm suffering this same problem. I took mine to Sony and they said there was a problem with the lens and that it had to be changed. And the cost for this would be 120 Euro for the lens and 50 euro for the workmanship (in total 170 Euro). This is absolutely outrageous considering I can buy the same camera brand new for only 280 USD. I didnt get it repaired since I can still use it as it is.

I purchased this camera in Jan 2006 and i had same error message. I gave camera for repair, they told me that they replaced the lens but after few days, i got same error message. Os. i doubt whether they replaced the lens or trying to fool me. The cost of same lens in India is arnd 200 USD. I you try to operate camera when its malfunctioning you won't be able to take snap at all zoom, if you try and take picture you will get blurred image, instead what you can do is fix a particular zoom at which it shows clear view on LCD before taking snap. This solution really worked for me and i hope you will this helpful.

I have the same problem. I read where it's corrected when people tap it on the side. I have tried this and it goes off for a couple seconds and then starts flashing again - so guess I'm not as lucky as most who have solved the problem this way.

Yeah, I have the same problem as well with the error message, the shaking of the camera when tryign to take a pic, and it does take a while for the camera to turn on. Lame. I bought my camera in May of 06. It still takes okay pics. But I would rather get a new camera. I am in San Diego. I think it is a manufacture defect.

I have also had the same problem with my DSC-T9. Had to hit it many times before the E:62:10 error message would go away, but I still have the problem with the occasional camera vibration when trying to take a picture, and the flashing warning sign of the hand in front of the lens when there is no such problem, and the lens is clean.

it costs about USD$ 200+ to get it repaired here in Malaysia. which is outrageous since i can buy a brand new one with an additional 50 bucks or so. :(

sony says this is not covered in the warranty dammit. this is a freakin bloody scammmmmmm :( i got the error message 3 months after i got my camera on october 2006 for my birthday. its almost a year now. i've sent it for service twice (one for warranty check, another, to repair). each taking about 2 months. (it took them 2 months to tell me that its not included in the warranty. and another 2 months to tell me the cost of repair.) so basically i've only had my camera for 8 months.

ARGH. :(

actualy, the rusian metod worked best :) i hit it few times against my hand and stared/stopped the stedy shot option and it dissapeared. Also my mechanics are screwed up so the camera vibrates from time to time.i brought it to a servise shop and they claimed they fixed it but it still had the same problem. i wos just on my way to leave and i tested the camera, it started and in the moment i took the panel down it swiched off and never started again in the servise shop, but when i got it home i thored it apart and checked some parts. beleve me i wos surprised to find that a fuse has blown up, i changed it and the camera started up again like nothing happened. the problem is that the optics were still defective, but were usable. hope i helped someone in here :)

ps

the mesage you get is translated as lens blocage

I dropped my camera a couple of days ago and got the E:62:10 message even though the camera appears to be working normally. The UK Sony helpline advise it would be a chargeable repair costing GBP115. I tried the hitting it solution (switched on in stills mode, tap sharply a couple of times on all 4 sides) then switched it off and back on again, lo and behold the error message isn't there anymore, and they say violence never solves anything! At the price of the repair it would make more sense to replace it with a newer model, although probably not Sony.

I contacted Sony Philippines regarding the error message and they told me I needed to pay approximately USD100 for the repair. I insisted that it has to be a manufacturing defect because I never dropped my camera as there was no external signs of misuse or abuse. They relented later on and repaired the camera for free, with a guarantee that if the same error is encountered within the warranty period, they will replace it with a new camera.

I have the same problem with my step-dad's camera and he's trying to figure out how to get the blurriness to go away. i don't know if it has to do with the error, but E:62:10 had also popped up on ours. It seems that the most effective way to get rid of the message is to tap the side of the camera that has the battery. And if y'alls know how to get the blurriness to go away, please please let me know, because i am slightly getting annoyed.

Lol, Ah man, what a joke. Typical Sony bollocks. I'm sick and tired of this company. Always the same deal. They are always whining. Finally threatened to cause a stink in the shop and I guarranteed them they wouldn't be selling many cameras from that shop that day. They kept it for like 3 days and when I got it back it was fine. Now, 3 wks later I have the same problem again.

They make great cameras but their service sux the big one. Always have. Anything that goes wrong takes like 2 to 3 months. This is precisely why I bought a Dell computer. At least I have some guy show up the next business day if there's a problem. Will never buy a Sony computer again. Their computer service is even worse.

Edit///.......

Ok, fixed the sucker with some good whacks. Here is a support site that goes over the problems with this message........

Same deal, give it a few good whacks and you're back in the black.

I first encountered the error E:62:10 when my grandpa asked me to bring his videocam, newly purchased DVD-R video camera, to sony repair center bec it was blurred and had the error. I searched the internet and followed their advise to tap the videocam twice....i started banging it softly and gradually increasing until the message was gone. I found out also that its because the lens motor got stuck in the zoom thats why its not zooming out anymore and the rap on the camera would dislodge the motor and thus fix it. I guess its the same with the Digital camera. I had the error in my dsc-T9 and gave it a whack and it was gone. Now, it also vibrates but still takes pictures though. Brought it to sony this morning, they are charging me equivalent of $150 to have it fixed. Crazy!

I just had the same E:62:10 issue with my DCS -T10. I followed all the above comments about tapping it sightly and increasing the strength of the "Slamming" until the message went away. Thanks people! It's this kind of thing that makes the internet great and exposes companies for what they try to hide from us consumers.

Okay, I got the infamous E:62:10 error message on my DSC-T30. Nothing seemed to be different except that my camera would take a few more seconds to turn on.
I tried 'tapping' it a few times. I took the battery out and tapped the battery side. I tapped all sides. For God's sakes I even tapped the battery.
I think 'tap' is the wrong term to use here. I had to beat my camera up pretty badly before the message disappeared. What worked for me: I kept the battery in, took it to picture mode, and just slammed it in every direction I could against my palm. All faces of the camera included.
At least it's gone now. Good luck to everyone who's trying. At least you'll feel good about beating up your camera for being so goddamn annoying.

I dropped my camera two days ago, got the damned error massage. Also, similar to other people's experience, the camera took longer to start up in the pic mode. Slight slapping didn't help, so I tapped the camera from all sides rather heavily - it helped! The errror message is gone and, also, the camera starts up as quick as before. Thanks to everybody, your postings appear to have been very helpful !

i dropped my camera and am getting the same error message, i'm guessing beating the lens may shift it back in place sometimes, but i'm assumign this could also damage the camera so one should be careful.. i'll try it though.
i can still take pictures too, but if i zoom in on images i am now taking, the pictures are no longer as crystal clear as they used to be... there is some blur..which doesn't work for me because i use my camera specifically to take shots of detailed embroideries. the stitches are no longer clear.

I FIXED IT by simply sliding out both the battery and memory stick.... putting them both back in .... and powering on the camera with the battery door still open.

My camera is the DSC-T9. The error E62:10 started when dropped from about 4 feet to floor.

Judging by this thread mine might be a special case, but hope it might help someone without the need to beat up the camera too bad.

Just fixed the error by opening the camera, removing the entire lens and CCD mechanism, opening (very carefully) lower motor assembly and re aligning the parts within. Seems that something meant to move in a tiny track was stuck....

This eliminated all the motor noise (it was constant), and the camera again works perfectly....

First clue was that tapping the same mechanism ridded me of the noises, but generated the error message. Now I am free of both...

I have the DSC-T9 with the vibrating problem imediately upon startup with the lense vibrating violently. It will not take clear pics at all. I have so far tried to initialize it, took out the battery and memory card and reinstalled, and even tried hitting it at all different directions. Nothing has worked. It only takes pics when it decides to give up and display the error 62:10 code. If I had a dollar for every time I missed a great picture because of the vibration~ I'd be rich. Could someone post the home repair solution for opening it up and fixing myself. It is out of warranty, and at that repair cost... never will happen. I can't believe that sony puts out such an inferior product. Because of this, I have lost both my faith and trust in their products. I will consider the Canon Elph as a replacement instead of a new Cyber Shot.

I cured the vibration by opening up the camera, loosening, and jiggling eht auto focus unit. It seems that the tiny little plastic parts jam up and the motors just keep spinning trying to move them. It's been 3 months now of almost daily use by my son, and no problems.

That said, this is one of 4 Sony Digital Still cameras we have, or have owned and we won't likely be buying any more. We have had problems with EVERY camera. Sony seems to blame everything on incorrect usage, even sometimes things that THEY have indicated are a known issue. Only once we were able to get a major fix under warranty without cost.

I recently found a way to reset my DSC-T9 in E:62:10 without modification. Although this seems to need to be done every time it is turned on:
Take the battery out and re-insert it. Hold the camera with your right hand using your pointer finger to hold down the small button at the top right with the "hands symbol" on it depressed. While you are holding this button down, use your left hand to turn on the camera. It is important not to let go of the "hands" button until the error code comes up and it stops shaking(usually 15 seconds). From there you can take normal pictures. Mind you, if you turn off the camera- you will need to repeat the process again. Without opening the camera itself, this has been the only temporary solution I have found.
Beyond this, I am going to get experimental and go inside the case itself and fix it. Most likely after I have a backup camera in case it doesn't work. I will update everyone once I do this procedure with results and pictures.

After getting the error message above I tried to fix it using the directions in the manual. The directions didn't work so I took it into a Sony shop. They tried the directions and that didn't work. The instructions directed you to re-initialize the camera. So then I found this website. I read all the solutions, incredulous at the lack of support from Sony. I didn't want to send my camera in and pay the exhorbitant fee either so I tried the banging the camera hard against my hand on all edges. It didn't work the first time. I banged harder and it worked!!!! Bless all of you who figured it out and commented here. You saved me buying a new camera. And the next time I buy one, it won't be a Sony.

Banging the camera seems to help.

I held the camera erect about one to two inches above a wooden table. With two fingers I pinched one of the four corners of the case such that the camera can tilt to the side, still erect but tilted sideways. I let the camera tilt and crash hard on the table surface each corner.

I think with this tilt-bang method you have more control about the force of the bang. If you need more force, raise a little more and repeat till the error disappears. You really need some force!

Hello,

got the problem today.
Checking, hitting and so on didn`t work.
In my opinion the problem is caused by an inner contact problem of the lens unit.
Somebody wrote it too.
What to do...
I disassemble the camera an checked the "wire" of the lens unit, pressing them a little bit together and then assemble the camera. Switch on and the failure wasn`t there.

Regards from Germany

I had the same problem with my Cybershot DSC-W85. I shut down the camera en tapped on the lens and on the camera itself (pretty hard, but not to hard) and the problem is fixed!

Hey all, I recently bought a Sony HDV Z5. Yesterday and the day before we were doing aeriels in Namibia, Southern Africa and the camera started with E32:10 codes. I turned it off and on and the problem disapeared for about 10min and started again! After the third E32:10, it slaped me with the pritty E62:10 code. I killed tha camera and kept on shooting with the Z7. the next morning I used a clean tape after take-off and it gave me 6sec before the E62:10 poped. I emmediately switched off the camera and decided to contact Sony as the manual says. (the camera went on hectic focus and zoom missions before displaying the message!) I started capturing my footage today, and on the 6sec tape, found black spots splatering on the lense, but while its focusing and zooming, looked like a internal splater on the sencor maybe or a part or belt went for home?! I dont know, I have evedance of when and how it happened, I wonder what sony would make off it??
Has anyone experienced this error with a HDV camera or Z5? And what was Sonys responce?
