why is it that when i put in new batteries into my sony dsc-u30 that the camera automatically switches off and the batteries are completely drained? cheers

whenever batteries are inserted and i switch from view mode to take a photo mode the camera switches off and claims the batteries are completely drained.

Sounds like you have a rather serious problem. You might want to get in touch with Sony customer service.
