Here's a few articles from SONY's Knowledge base which may be helpful:

Knowledge Article C240921
The battery does not power the camera for the specified amount of time or drains too quickly.

When the camera is turned on, it may take up to a minute before the battery remaining time will appear. In addition, the displayed battery life is an estimate. The actual battery life will vary depending on how the camera is operated and what functions and types of batteries are used; using zoom and flash frequently will shorten the battery charge.

The average continuous recording time of the battery as listed on the packaging will vary due to several different factors including ambient temperature and the power consumption of the camera or camcorder. The battery package states the power consumption specification needed to achieve the average continuous recording time. If the camera or camcorder power consumption is more than the speciifcation on the battery packaging, the average continuous recording time will be reduced.

NOTE: Power consumption information is available in the specifications section of the instruction manual which was included with your camera or camcorder. Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.

Also, batteries discharge faster when used in cold weather conditions. In cold environments, it is recommended that the batteries be kept in a warm place before using. Sometimes batteries may recover some power if they are warmed up after being in the cold.

NOTE: Do not mix new and used batteries. Doing so may shorten the battery life.

Knowledge Article C354697
The battery life is shorter than expected when using alkaline batteries.

Alkaline batteries will have a much shorter life and the amount of pictures that can be taken with alkaline batteries is much lower compared to nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries. Alkaline batteries may only allow a few pictures to be taken depending on the condition.

The following conditions will decrease battery life:
# When the surrounding temperature is low.
# When the flash is used.
# When using the LCD or when backlight is set to bright
# . When the camera has been turned off and on many times.

It is recommended that you use nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries. Nickel metal hydride batteries are supplied with some cameras and with the optional accessory kit with a quick charger and STAMINA® battery.

NOTES:

* Additional battery types may be supported with some cameras. Check the operating instructions for specific information.
* When using alkaline batteries, the battery indicator may not display the correct information and the power may shut off even if the battery remaining indicator shows sufficient battery life.
* Do not mix new and old alkaline batteries.
* There is a big difference in the performance of batteries of different types and of batteries made by different manufacturers.

Thank you! I will look into everything listed. I did go and buy new rechargeable batteries and a new charger. So far, I think they are lasting longer. Thanks for the help!

Here's another question - are the temperatures you operating in extreme? Extremely high and extremely low temperatures can affect battery performance.
