You're experiencing a flash failure. SONY will need to service it. There is this page which describes how to fix it yourself, but I wouldn't unless your warranty is completely out of force.

Thanks a lot I tried the way i was guided and cleaned the flash which had developed some white grainy material. I carefully cleaned taht and shortcircuted a capacitor. After assembling i "re-setted" the camera and now flash is working fine. Thanks for the tip.

I have a flash problem with my Sony DSC-W1 camera.
The flash stopped working, there is no error code, and I can select any flash mode I wish.
I checked the voltage on the capacitor and xenon tube, and it is about 230 volts d.c. It will not fire though through the camera. I have reset the camera to no avail. I have also replaced the xenon tube. The two capacitors are ok.
What can I do now....hmm...??
Help....pleezz

Well, you've done just about everything you can do short of replacing the circuit board. I'm not really sure it's worth that much energy. Rule of thumb is that if it costs 50% or more of the sale price to fix it, you're much better off getting a new one that will give you more bang for the buck. And considering the camera is so lowly rated, it's probably a better idea to take the money you would've spent and invest in a newer, better and more upgraded model.
