It is best to get it repaired at a local servicing store. It isn't a huge cost. You could also tape it shut for free!

You can also purchase a replacement part through Sony Parts and Accesories. The only problem you might have with this is knowing how to replace the part as there are no instructions when you receive the part. I am waiting to get a reply back from Sony on how to replace the part. I guess the next best thing would be to take it to a local servicing store and have them replace it. The part numbers are as follows:

Item - ( HOLDER, BATTERY(WITH BATTERY DOOR), silver ), 175648312, $33.42 ea.

Item - ( HOLDER, BATTERY(WITH BATTERY DOOR), black ), 175648322, $33.42 ea.

No, I have not. It looks very complicated. I think my best bet is to take it to a camera store. But, if I do figure out how to replace it without taking it to a camera store, I will let you know.

So, I gave my camera and the replacement door to my friend who is adept at these things... A camera repair store is probably the best option.

He wrote me: I had to completly dismantle the camera to get the battery box out!
It is not something that's meant to be replaced - there's at least a dozen screws and maybe 7 tiny ribbon cables to undo.

Good luck!!

Thank you. That sounds like the best plan for me. I do not want to mess it up and besides that, I do not have a small enough screw driver to take all those tiny screws out.

I was able get the door off without completely dissasembling the camera. You still need to buy the door and the battery holder case, but I didn't find the replacement so bad - the only hard part is working with that tiny spring. Canadian price for that part is $49.00

To jens, How did you get the door off without taking the camera apart? That is the only piece I need as well. It doesn't seem that the pin, will come out, but if I could get that spring off it looks like I can switch the door.

Thanks

There is a guy on ebay that sells the battery door for $12.00 and the battery holder for $37.00 including shipping. He includes instructions for replacing the parts. Search for DSC-W1 battery.

I took to a local camera shop and they wanted $120 for the repair job. $5 for just looking at it (I lost $5 to begin with - stay away from BDC camera of Madison, WI!!). I bought the part from www.partstore.com for $42 ($32 + $10 shipping). No instructions whatsoever! It took me 1.5 hours to replace it. There are about 12 screws in 3 different sizes. Make notes which screw belongs to which. You take the front and back cover off. Remove the one small circuit board and unscrew the main board. The LCD screen and a small lith. batter can be flipped over so you will have access to the metal piece that attaches the battery holder. You will be able to take the battery holder out eventually. There is one circuit board with many tiny ribbon cables - you don't need to remove the cables except the battery holder cable in order to remove the broken holder. My camera has been working fine after the replacement was done.

There is indeed a design flaw: 1. the battery holder latch should have been made with stronger material or better design. 2. the door and latch should be seperate from the battery holder so that it will be easier to place. Anybody who works for SONY hear this?

i just read everybody's notes - and it was very helpful. The camera is my Dad's and he is going to kill me - seriously. Even if I ordered the part he lives no where near me and I'm sure could not/would not replace it himself. So I guess I have two questions- 1 my camera has a little screw when you open the battery cover- I am assuming that isn't the only one you have to take out?(Hoping sony made it easier) and 2 about how much were you all quoted to fix this problem Thanks

That little screw gets you no place. The whole camera has to be taken apart. I have needed to replace the door 2 times the first being last year and the next being last month. It does take a very clean area, I put down paper towels to help the screws I removed stay in place. It took me about 2 hours the first time and about 45 mins the 2 time. Alot of screws, easier for a woman to do (only because of us having smaller hands and the screw are very tiny!) I found a person on ebay that sells the battery compartment, and it includes the instructions, at a reasonable price. I did not follow the instructions though since I had done it before. I do not remember the name, I just put in DSC-W1 SONY BATTERY COMPARTMENT in the search. At this point with the camera being so out dated, I don't feel that it is worth taking it someplace and having them do it as it will easily cost you 150.00 and that is a good down payment to a new one! GOOD LUCK HOPE THIS HELPS!!

buy that, then take a ruler or something like scissers or sumthin n put it under the metal part n then slightly push on it, the plastic part should slide off
after that slide the new one on n click it to place
this is only if the battery door is broken like the clips and there is a most common broken areas pictures on that page

What a joke! This is very poor design. I can't believe that they put a battery compartment in the corner (place most likely to take a hit) and don't have a foolproof design for minor repairs. Seems like engineering 101 to me...
I'm not ready to spend 45 min to 1 hour trying to repair it. Plus I understand that there's a bunch a small parts and connectors all over. I just found a sturdy thick rubber band. Not the best but it will do the trick fine until I buy a new camera...

Gosh! This shows that Sony is not worth the price at all. Besides being in '(place most likely to take a hit)', mine just broke on the fastening clip because they used poor quality plastic. The door itself could hold the pressure from the battery spring and i've only used it 2 yrs. Repair? I would rather save a little more to buy a Cannon new camera that would last.

There is a lot of misinformation on this site. I suspect the most common damage found with the battery door is with the 2 tabs on the inside of the battery door. Mine broke off. First off, if you want a replacement part go to ebay and put in DSC-W1 replacement door and no, I am not a dealer. I ordered one for $10 and it included these instructions:
"this is a very easy door to change, just slide something flat and thin (I used a butter knife) between the metal plate and the door. Wiggle it just right and the door slides right off. Then bend the tabs down and slide the new door on till it clicks."
To further explain: As you have the door open and sticking up when you look down on the door from above you need to slide your butter knife there between the plastic door and the rectangular metal piece. When you twist the butter knife the plastic door becomes loose and you slide it up and off. Replacement slides on the way that the broken door slid out (once loosened).
I'm not real sure where the idea that you need to take the camera apart and remove 10 screws. Maybe if something else is wrong but not for fixing anything broken on the battery door itself. I was amazed how easy this was after reading everything on this site. Good luck.

Don't need to order any parts and give Sony any more money!!!! Here's the fix....go to hardware store and get a plastic screw to fit the screw hole on bottom of camera (for tripod attachment). Buy or fabricate a metal plate about 1" x 2" (big enough to cover the screw hole and battery compartment. Drill a hole in the metal to align to the screw hole. Trim the length of the plastic screw to fit the screw hole. Using a large screwdriver...or a Quarter....screw the metal plate to the camera and it will hold the broken battery door closed...no need to keep fixing the stupid battery door tabs!!!! Hope this helps all!

TO CHANGE OUT THE $10 DOOR ON A CYBER SHOT REQUIRES NO DIS-ASSEMBLY!

The plastic door is held in place by the brass, spring-loaded support hinge piece - it just slides off.

Easier said than done, I know. There is a small brass tab that 'locks' the door in two different notches = the 'sliding out' action when you release the door from the frame when opening it. In order to get that tab to release 'past' that outer sliding position, you need to wedge a small screwdriver (or butterknife) gently under the plastic door from the 'back' (or hinge) side of the door. A slight twist gives a little vertical pressure that should disengage that brass latch and slide off the plastic door easily. There is a tiny plastic tab on the inside "bottom" lip of that plastic door to keep the piece from sliding all the way off, but it is small enough that you can wiggle past it. When you slide the new plastic door onto the brass hinge, make sure that tiny plastic tab re-engages properly.

Piece of cake. Course it took me 15 minutes (and this forum) to figure it out.

An even simpler solution is to just attach the small compartment of the tripod where the camera is attached. It will keep your batteries inside without any hacks on it.

If you don't want to bother with repairing this thing you can use a quick release tripod adapter to hold in the batteries. I used the Manfrotto 3157N because I had one lying arround. It was $11.99 and could be considered a permanent fix. You may want to find a lighter one as this one is beefier than you may need. I am pretty sure I have a plastic one around here somewhere and it would be lighter than this aluminum one.

You don't have to take apart the entire camera to fix the plastic battery door cover! San Diego Camera Solution sells the battery door/lid for $9.95 plus shipping of $3.00. You can also ask them for instructions on how to slide of the plastic battery door cover from the metal plate it is attached to. You can search ebay under DSC-W1 battery door and find them or email: sdcamerasolutions@gmail.com

Metal shim under back of door, lift gently, slides right off. Slide new door on and your done.

If you can't figure that out, send me the camera, the door you got from SD camera supply, and $100 in small unmarked bills. I will fix it and ship it back. Bwaaaahaaaaaaa!

I came up with a work around. I used a bolt and a piece of thin metal 1/16" to keep the battery door shut. The part cost 25 cents.

tool required
hacksaw
file
vise (optional)

1/2 lenght 1/4" Bolt and nut. Make sure thread come up to head.

Instruction- thread nut on to bolt cut to desired length.

1/16 in thick metal ( like L bracket from hardware store ) Cut rectangular piece with hole to one side. File edges so no share edges.

If you want photos send me an email

I have just replaced the whole battery compartment. It took a good two hours to do this. However, I put it all back together and find that when it is on picture view it's fine, but when I turn the control to take a picture, it will power off. I've stripped it down, no front or back case and it works when the strap from the case to a circuit board is not attached. As soon as I attache it, it powers off again. It seems to me that it is shorting out, but why? This strap should be attached. If anybody can help, it would be much appreciated, it's consuming my whole weekend!
