Does anyone have a repair manual for this camera?
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl?PRODTYPE=38,33,7,37,25,39,53
You can either choose it from the drop down or type the model# into the box. Then go to the bottom right of the page where it says Getting Started and click on the blue link for Manuals/ Specs/ Warranty. It looks like they have Operating Instructions for this model, which hopefully is what you need. If not let me know and I'll keep searching.
If you find the repair manual, I will be eternally greatful. Thanks.
http://www.servicemanuals.net/results.aspx?type=SM&brand=160&model=dsc-w1
And here it is for 10.99- seems to be lowest price out there:
http://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/828523
I'm not sure, however, that that cheaper one has all the info you need in it. If you're OK with paying for it my advice is to go to google.com and put in the camera name plus Repair Manual, and then check out what you find until you're sure you have the right manual and a reputable company to download it from. Hope that sort of helps.
I'm looking for the same service manual. If you've been able to obtain a copy and are willing to share, I'd appreciate it ifyou'd drop me a line.
Thanks.
Mike
I purchased the repair manual for 10.99 on line from tradebit. I will send you the manual in a PDF format. Please send me an email address that I can send it to you.
Maybe we can work together on replacing our parts. I find that the manual is really technical. I did buy the part to repair the battery holder and took it to a camera show to repair. They said I would be better off trying to repair it myself because they would charge me $50+ to do it. So, right now it is taped shut.
I can't tell you how to fix it, but it shouldn't be too hard for a DIYer as when I googled it I found a whole slew of replacement battery doors for sale on Ebay. So apparently it is replaceable at home. That probably doesn't help you much but for what it's worth you can supposedly buy a new door.
sclough391@aol.com
Paula,
Could you e-mail me the pdf as well? My e-mail address is lengmui@juno.com. Let me know what they recommend at the camera repair shop. Thanks all!
It seems that you're beseiged by requests for the repair manual, but I'd still appreciate a copy as well. I was able to troubleshoot my problem on my own but it would be handy to have the manual.
Your generosity in sharing is appreciated by myself and the rest of the folks.

Yeah, I kinda took my camera paintballing and it got shot up.
My life would be so much better if you could send me a copy of the repair manual too :)

I can't even get tape to keep the door shut any longer.
I researched some repair places on line and found a place in Monrovia, CA. They gave me a quote of replacing the battery compartment/lid and clean the camera with a 90 day warranty for $115.00. $85.00 labor and $30.00 for part. I am going to send my camera to them and let them rip it apart. I found that it is too difficult for the layperson to replace this component. If you want to contact them as well, their website is: www.digitechcamerarepair.com and put attn: John B.
I see many of you are having problems with the battery compartment door. I don't appear to have that problem myself, but my lens retracting mechanism has given up the ghost, with the lens stuck in the extended position. The price I've been quoted for the repair job is around the same price as an equivalent new camera, so I'm wondering if you wouldn't mind sending me a copy of the service manual, so I can have a go at fixing it myself.
Thankyou
Warwick

Let me know if everything goes okay with the repair. I will keep the web site in mind.

Could I also get a copy of the service manual? My boy spilled a little pop on the selector dial and it is stuck in place. Need to get it apart and clean it off if I can. Thank you so much.

How to solve it ? Could I get the copy of service manual Paula? Thanks.
Tri ( tri@sundaya.com)
It appears that you are quite popular with the service manual. I still have not sent my DSC-W1 to the repair shop for the battery lid as of yet. I am afraid that I will not get it back in time for the holidays. Once I send it and get it back, I will let you know.
Steve
I bought this same camera while on holiday in Vegas last year but one of the kids dropped the camera and I now have exactly the same problem with the broken battery compartment door. I live in New Zealand and although I managed to buy the replacement compartment (via China!), there is no Sony repair centre within my area. I would very much appreciate it if you could let me have a copy of the repair manual woodcroft53@hotmail.com cc to dgordon@transfieldworley.co.nz (in case file size is too large) Thanks a lot
Dave.
I'm also in New Zealand and am wondering where you got your battery compartment door from. I'm looking for a lens assembly block at the moment, and Sony/TradeTech have quoted me close to NZ$400 for the part which is ridiculous. I've found one for US$110 from www.partstore.com but i'm not sure whether they ship internationally.
Cheers
Hi everybody,
I'm french guy, and i look around in numerous website in order to find repair manual (book) for Konica and Nikon camera's (for all camera made between 2002 and 2005).
The main problem is, Nikon like Konicha (Sony today) do not want to give me datas , so I am in da s... .
Well, I someone know how can I find repair books for these two trademarks it will be nice.
As well, if someone have some tips to find spare parts and component to repair myself camera i take too.
Think you in advance.
Pierre STAWA
Afraid that I also sourced the battery compartment via trade tech
(Michelle.MacDonald@tradetech.co.nz) and it cost NZ$85, when I asked them where the instructions were for fitting it they were about as useful as tits on a snake! You might as well buy a new camera as pay them $400 for a replacement lens assembly block.
I certainly won't be buying any Sony products again.
Cheers,
Dave.
Cheers.
Step 1 - Remove the front and back covers of the camera - 6 screws in total. The microphone can be separated from the front cover by gently pulling it from its socket.
Step 2 - The control switch block (top piece of camera) can then be removed from the main assembly by unclipping it from both ends, and carefully disconnecting its cable from the mainboard.
Step 3 - Disconnect the flash unit's cable from the mainboard by first flicking the black part of the clip up towards you and then gently prying it from the slot. The flash block can then be removed by jiggling it about to dislodge the two clips holding it in place. The manual recommends discharging the capacitors with a 1k-ohm, 1W resistor.
Step 4 - Remove the bottom tripod mount piece from the camera by unscrewing the "strap" (DC ground plate) holding it in place, and unclipping it from underneath the memory stick door.
Step 5 - Disconnect the two lens block cables from the mainboard and then lift the lens assembly from the chassis.
Step 6 - Disconnect the cable leading to the control switch board (located at the back of the camera) and also the power cable to the battery compartment from the mainboard. Remove the two screws attaching the mainboard to the battery compartment.
Step 7 - Turn the camera over so the back is now facing you. Open the battery compartment and remove the screw attaching it to the main assembly.
Step 8 - Remove the two screws attaching the control switch board to the main chassis, and the screw attaching the USB connector board to the battery compartment. You should now be able to remove this section and have access to the remaining two screws attaching the battery compartment to the main chassis.
Step 9 - Remove these two screws and undo the two clips holding the LCD panel in place. The battery compartment should now be able to be removed with a bit of jiggling around. The LCD will now be unclipped so I disconnected it also.
Step 10 - Insert new battery compartment and reverse the disassembly process.
I have all sony service manuals for all kind of product.

Could you send me the service manual for the W1? I just had my lens jam in the closed position and won't open or close now. Hopefully not too complex of a problem to fix after looking at the manual.
Thanks,

Can't believe there are other people who have the same problem I encountered.
I bought this camera for my Mother when it first came out.
Back then it had one of the biggest screens. =)
She used it well for several years and just recently dropped it, breaking the little hinges on the battery flap.
She felt bad about it and I promised that I can fix it for her.
But then it was Christmas time and I got her a new one...
Now I am planning to fix it and keep it for myself.
Send me your email address and I can get you a copy of the manual. BTW, I eventually went out and got a new camera rather than try to replace the battery compartment and lid. Good luck with that.

I gave my Sony DSC-W1 to my mother last year but it appears blurry dark spots on the pics taken. I think i should try to clean the camera, but before i attack it with my screwdriver i think it would be helpful to read the service manual first!
I should be wery thankful if someone who has the pdf could send it to me?
regards Stellan , Sweden
stellan, I need your e-mail so I can send the manual to you today. I had the same problem with my W1 and had to have it cleaned (I think they cleaned the CCD).

Today I successfully replaced the battery compartment.
I never took apart anything more complex than a cell phone before, but it turned out not too bad. :D
Thanks especially to [steve] for sending me the manual and [Warwick] for writing the step-by-step instruction.
Michael
I got the part from VideoLabs (videospare@yahoo.com)
They only take PayPal and it was $30 USD including shipping.
One thing is, they are located in India.
It took about 10 days to get to me.
But they were able to get me an original Sony part and the box came well packed.
Give them a shot if you can't find it local.
I also think you can contact Sony directly.
Good luck with your project!
Let me know if I can be of any help.
Can you send me the Sony Manual. I would appreciate it.
Thank you.

I have a Sony DSC-W1, and a friend of mine suggested to me that I visit this site for some help. Right now the power button, and shutter button make a funny 'crunchy' sound when pressed to turn on/off or to take a pic; Also my shutter cover outside of the lens (when camera is powered on/off cover opens/closes) doesn't open right away, takes a while to open up now. What I think the problem is that there is debris/dried liquor (from my clubbing/drinking/sharing with others to see the pics. nights) that has accumulated inside. I want to open up the camera and clean it out, but I dunno if that's a good idea, does anyone have suggestions/tricks I can do before opening this camera up? Thanks
check your email for a copy of the DSC-W1 manual.
Good luck.
steve
I have mailed videospare@yahoo.com to order a battery compartment but sofar no answer received. In Holland the Sony sparepart cost 58 euro at Sony and I think that it is ridiculous far to much for such an item. Has anybody ordered the sparepart besides Halfdoor at Videospare? Maybe they don't deliver in Europe? If I see the prices of the new Sony w-serial cameras I ask myself if all the trouble repairing is al worthed by now. I payed 470 euro 2 and 1/2 year ago for the W1. And I will never buy a Sony camera again if I cannot repair my old W1 camera. What a lack of service!
gz, Monique
I understand your frustration. That is the one reason I "canned" my DSC-W1 and bought a new digital camera with better capabilities. I don't think Sony is aware of the battery compartment problems on the W1's.
steve
yes, I am getting frustrated. Aside of that stupid thing of not able to close the battery-compartment the camera works fine. (although it killed also a new 1 gig memorycard once: C:13:01 ERROR) Did you really throw away your camera? And what camera do you have now? I bet not a Sony?
;) Monique (can buy a lot of tape for 58 euro still)
Thanks,

I may be able to help you with W1 model. I used to spend time with it a while ago which the flash/lcd problems. Anyway, it's many year already. You may send the copy of circuit or a copy of pdf repair manual. I'm an engineer and hopefully I can help you more or less with cybershot W1, W5, W7 and W12 models. Good lucks you guys.
If you could I would also like a copy of that repair manual. My battery door has also broken and I ordered the part from sony last week. I'm hoping my brother will be able to fix it with the manual, he's good at electronics so we will see.
If you could please email me a copy at hgilbert16@hotmail.com it would be greatly appreciated.
I read that you did a awesome job sending the manual and step by step instructions I was wondering if you would have time to send it to me also. I just emailed Paula to see if she could send it also and then I read that Warwick sent step by step instructions which would be great for me.
My battery door is also broken on my sony DSC-W1 and I ordered the part last week from sony, so I'm hoping to fix it myself.

I was checing for the part on a google search. There are around 4 different part numbers listed.
I did another search "Opening the DCS W1 for reapair" and this site came up. I can't believe there are so many of us with same problem! Must be a bad design!

I have sent you the service manual. I wasn't able to fix my lens as the auto-cover mechanism had broken off inside. Also, the manual doesn't really go into that much detail. Parts these days are manufactured to be disposable units it seems, so if worst comes to worst you might have to get a replacement lens block assembly from a Sony dealer or http://www.partstore.com if you live in the US or Canada.
Warwick
I would like to try to replace the door myself.

My little cousin dropped my DSC-W1 down the stairs and now the battery compartment doesnt close :\ and i have a wedding to go to on Thurseday and i cant take any pics. I have purchased the battery cover lid for $50! man i cant believe how sony rips you off for such a tiny plastic piece.

I believe my daughter added some water to my CyberShot DSC P71, in fact I think it went swimming - I know it's older, I actually use a Canon EOS now, but I would love to repair this, and after many searches through google, this is the only site I could find. I know it's much older than your models.
Being a "want to know how it works", my camera is in about 5 pieces right now, with one stripped screw and 4 that won't come out, I belive I have removed at least 12 to 15. My concern is putting it back together, I am pretty good about keeping the parts (screws, labeled then taped together, but wow it comes apart really strange.
If any one has a repair manual for this or something close, I would really appreciate being pointed in the right direction or would be happy to help someone with the cost (reasonably) if they had to purchase it from a supplier.
Thanks tons.... or... oh well! :)

Have browsed the manual and find my problem to be too technical (hard to access the switch) might as well bear with the "slight problem"

I noticed that in the guide, (except the cable you just mentioned, thanks for that info)
but replacement parts here in my country is quite expensive, (add a little and you get a brand new cam, with better specs since the dsc w-1 is a bit old now)
I'll try to think about playing with the cam :)
Thanks!

prophotosd doesn't show the door in their ebay store right now but I emailed them to ask about it and am waiting for the reply.
The battery compartment with shipping would be $45. I would like to find just the plastic door.
I'll keep looking.
As many of you, I broke the batery compartment of my dsc w1 :(

I ordered the replacement door and got it the next day in the mail ($9.95 + $1.00 shipping). It is an after market replacement so it isn't exactly the same fit but it is working great! My husband replaced it yesterday and I am back to using my camera again.
If just your battery door is broken (and not the tabs on the holder) then this is a great, economical option to get it working again. I lived with the broken battery door for a year before it got so bad I couldn't use the camera any more.
Thanks to everyone for the manual and the advice on finding the spare part!
didn't u see my previous post? You can download the manual from the upper link!
Mmmhmm, it seems u are a little lazy... ;oP
Ok, I copy it from my other post:
http://d.turboupload.com/d/1706764/ITA-ENG_Sony_DSC-W1-W12_-_Pulizia_sensore_cc.zip.html
Don't worry if u see an Italian title, inside the .zip file u can find the English service manual!
Let me know if everything willbe ok....
I misunderstood your post....
I'm really glad u've repaired your camera :o)
Thanks for the Ebay link. I order it last Wed or Thurs and it came in on Saturday. It came with instructions to replace the battery door. It took less than five minutes with a very small screwdriver. It works like a champ and it only cost $10.95.
Thanks a bunch for all of the help!!!
BrianR
no way, dude! Many people downloaded it, but none of them found anything in it.
Is seems you are a fu..ed bastard who is going to make money with that manual!!!!
Hal9000
I would like to try to replace the door myself.
Could somebody send me the pdf of the

It's possible to buy only the door (around 10$) on Ebay.
The manuals given by Hal90000 are not infected. They have been really usefull since I managed in replacing the batery holder and cleaning the ccd in about 1 hour.
I have also dicovered that a small ant died inside my camera. It explains why the batteries could not last more than 40 pictures.
My camera is almost new now :)
I have a dsc-w1 with the e:61 error and lens problems too!
Any chance someone could send me the service manual as well?
Thanks guys.

THE BATTERY HOLDER PART WAS ORDERED FROM SONY PARTS 800 488-7669.

I have the same lens retraction problems with mDSC-W1.
Also after downloading Hal9000 .zip for the service manual, I can't extract the files form it ?!

Further surfing to find a solution to this stuck lens problem, I've found the miracle solution.
Go to
http://www.photographers.co.uk/html/photographers-forum-1.cfm?ForumNumber=875&Title=sony%20cybershot%20DSC-U30
and check by yourself
Problem fixed !

Wow! It's so nice to stumble across a support group for DSC-W1-owners-with-broken-battery-door-tabs! I am looking forward to checking out the manual and possibly repairing mine myself.
BUT! One thing that concerns me is, even when I put brand spanking new batteries in the camera and hold the battery door shut tightly the camera still flashes the no charge indicator and shuts itself off. Has any one else experienced this added complication? I'm worried that just replacing the door is not going to solve the problem.
I'm on the verge of giving in and getting a new camera but then I couldn't use my wonderful MPK-WA marine pack anymore! :P
Any advice is much appreciated!
Thanks,
Heather
Several people (on another forum) had fixed the stuck lens issue by banging the camera lightly. I was quite skeptical, but tried anyway. I banged the camera against the palm of my hand several times, also lightly against a hard serface and sure enough the problem went away. The camera is back to normal.
Good luck,
Ray

I have a dust inside my W1, so Im disappointted when making photos with the zoom. A big black shadow appear. So the only way is to open the camera.

I wrote the password in my previous posts and as the file name of a text file inside the zipped one. Anyway, it is:
'' sonysucks! ''
Check the zipped file again, may be you downloaded a corrupt file!
I've sent you again my zipped file just few mins ago
I tried three different times on two different computers and I also cannot open with your password. I tried it different possible combinations (caps/no caps/mix/etc) to no avail. Could you possibly upload a new zip file and post the link maybe without a password?
Sure apprecaite your help.

Gives me error like "unknown method [filename], cannot execute blah"
Is there any chance you could host or zip the files without them being in an exe? That might do the job. Or try sending me over a working version of that zip?
thanks for making this available!
p.s tried it on two different computers and downloaded it twice, so i think its gotta be the file

or try uploading it on something else like http://www.localhostr.com
I have sent it to your email, nevertheless.
My friend said Costco would take the camera back. I went to Costco yesterday and returned the camera, I got my money back.
I figured why fix the battery door when it might break again.
Costco has changed their return policy, 90 days only for electronic equipment, computers, cameras, TVs etc.
I ordered a NikonCoolpix P5000 from Beach Camera. You get a 1 G card and free shipping. I paid $349.00. It's 10 meg. and has a hot shoe for optional flash. I ended up paying $22.78 after getting my money back for the DSC-W1.

@ Bob: Here is the link for the DSC-W1 manual http://wockanz.files-upload.com/files/249901/SonyDSC-W1ServiceManual.pdf
lock on a Sony DSC-W1 is crude it's effective.
Take a large head 1/4-20 screw that is shortened to appx. 3/8" and a 5/16 flat washer (appx. 1"dia.) Put the screw thru the washer and thread it into the tripod mounting
hole, gently tighten the screw and washer in position over the battery cover. Done!
I'm impressed at the number of people who have the same battery compartment problem I have! Could someone send me the repair manual or instructions for replacing the battery compartment please? I would also appreciate it greatly if any of you could send me simple step by step instructions for this kind of repairs.
charlesthi@hotmail.com
thank you in advance!
As for replacing the battery compartment door, it appears the door can be swapped for a replacement one without removing the whole compartment. There are a few sellers on ebay selling just the doors, otherwise the whole battery compartment can be purchased and the door swapped over.
I'm looking for the powershot SD500 service manual and can seem to find it.
I was going to buy it from ebay, but something went wrong.
I stumbled apon this forum and seems that some one here might have it.
My camera is completely dead.
I'm a TV technician and I repair all model and most electronics components.
If you have the manual please email it to me.
I repair Plasma,DLP,LCD,REAR PRO. etc. Any questions feel free to ask.
Thanks Val
