I found the owner's manual, albeit in a weird place:
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl?PRODTYPE=38,33,7,37,25,39,53

You can either choose it from the drop down or type the model# into the box. Then go to the bottom right of the page where it says Getting Started and click on the blue link for Manuals/ Specs/ Warranty. It looks like they have Operating Instructions for this model, which hopefully is what you need. If not let me know and I'll keep searching.

I have the owners manual. I need a repair manual as I have to replace the battery compartment and lid. I have received this part through Sony with no instructions on how to replace the part.

If you find the repair manual, I will be eternally greatful. Thanks.

Well, I found it... but unfortunately not for a free download like I was hoping to find. Here it is for 23.99:
http://www.servicemanuals.net/results.aspx?type=SM&brand=160&model=dsc-w1

And here it is for 10.99- seems to be lowest price out there:
http://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/828523

I'm not sure, however, that that cheaper one has all the info you need in it. If you're OK with paying for it my advice is to go to google.com and put in the camera name plus Repair Manual, and then check out what you find until you're sure you have the right manual and a reputable company to download it from. Hope that sort of helps.

Hi Mike,

I purchased the repair manual for 10.99 on line from tradebit. I will send you the manual in a PDF format. Please send me an email address that I can send it to you.

Maybe we can work together on replacing our parts. I find that the manual is really technical. I did buy the part to repair the battery holder and took it to a camera show to repair. They said I would be better off trying to repair it myself because they would charge me $50+ to do it. So, right now it is taped shut.

Seems that the battery holder door is a common problem with the Sony DSC-W1. I recently dropped my DSC-W1 on the ground (it was in a case) and busted the battery door. Is this a difficult part for a DIYer? I tried removing two screws in proximity with no luck. Any information would be appreciated. Thank You. Steve

Steve,
I can't tell you how to fix it, but it shouldn't be too hard for a DIYer as when I googled it I found a whole slew of replacement battery doors for sale on Ebay. So apparently it is replaceable at home. That probably doesn't help you much but for what it's worth you can supposedly buy a new door.

I have the manual which I purchase through tradebit and I do have a replacement battery cover. The manual is very techinical and trying to replace it yourself might be a problem. The only problem with trying to replace it yourself is that their is a cable that needs to be connected to the camera. The battery holder door is not a separate piece.

Paula, thanks for you information. I saw where there is a cable connection at the base of the battery compartment which I feel may be difficult to attach. I guess I need to know how difficult it really is to replace the battery holder/door or do I send it out for repair.

I think it would be difficult to replace. It looks like you would need to take apart the whole camera in order to replace the compartment. I would take it to a camera repair shop and get an estimate before repairing yourself. In fact, that is what I am going to do with mine. I don't want to mess with breaking anything while trying to replace the part. I hope that helps. If you want me to send you a pdf file of the manual so you can see how hard it might be to do it yourself, I will need your email address.

Paula, you can probably guess what I'm going to ask. My SD500 has begun making very interesting noises when I try to turn it on, and the lens is stuck 'out'. The screen doesn't come on, either, but I don't know if that's related or a separate problem. Can you send me a copy of the repair manual as well? I think you're becoming the patron saint of Canon SD500 users.

Too all of you asking for the manual, I am willing to share it. But, before I send it, make sure you have enough room in your email account to be able to download it. It is a file size of 5,551 kb. Also, I took my camera to a camera shop to have the part replaced and they would not touch it even though I had the part. They said that Sony is very unfriendly in their customer service.

After looking at the exploded view of replacing the battery compartment/door, it is apparant that that is a difficult job to do. Perhaps we can find someone on a google search that can repair the door and with as many people as we have here, perhaps get a price break if we all send the units to them. What do you think?
I can't even get tape to keep the door shut any longer.

I just contacted Sony and they said because I do not have an authorized repair shop in my city, that I would need to send my camera to Sony. The flat rate for the repair would be $181.00. If they found anything else wrong with the camera, that would be additional. They would bring the camera back up to new status and give me a 90 day warranty. I found that to be too pricey for me. They said even though I had the part, that I would not get a break in price. So I am sending the part back and getting a refund. I use packing tape to keep the door shut, but mine doesn't completely pop open.

Paula,

I researched some repair places on line and found a place in Monrovia, CA. They gave me a quote of replacing the battery compartment/lid and clean the camera with a 90 day warranty for $115.00. $85.00 labor and $30.00 for part. I am going to send my camera to them and let them rip it apart. I found that it is too difficult for the layperson to replace this component. If you want to contact them as well, their website is: www.digitechcamerarepair.com and put attn: John B.

Hi Paula,

I see many of you are having problems with the battery compartment door. I don't appear to have that problem myself, but my lens retracting mechanism has given up the ghost, with the lens stuck in the extended position. The price I've been quoted for the repair job is around the same price as an equivalent new camera, so I'm wondering if you wouldn't mind sending me a copy of the service manual, so I can have a go at fixing it myself.

Thankyou

I bought this same camera while on holiday in Vegas last year but one of the kids dropped the camera and I now have exactly the same problem with the broken battery compartment door. I would very much appreciate it if you could let me have a copy of the repair manual woodcroft53@hotmail.com cc to dgordon@transfieldworley.co.nz (in case file size is too large) Thanks a lot

Hey Dave,

I'm also in New Zealand and am wondering where you got your battery compartment door from. I'm looking for a lens assembly block at the moment, and Sony/TradeTech have quoted me close to NZ$400 for the part which is ridiculous. I've found one for US$110 from www.partstore.com but i'm not sure whether they ship internationally.

Service/repair manuals can be purchased in .pdf format from sites such as www.manualsparadise.com and www.servicemanuals.net, however you may be able to find the right repair manual for free from www.eserviceinfo.com if you're lucky. Parts can be purchased through the dealers but if you search around you can get them cheaper.

Hi Warwick,

Afraid that I also sourced the battery compartment via trade tech
(Michelle.MacDonald@tradetech.co.nz) and it cost NZ$85, when I asked them where the instructions were for fitting it they were about as useful as tits on a snake! You might as well buy a new camera as pay them $400 for a replacement lens assembly block.
I certainly won't be buying any Sony products again.

Cheers,

Dave.

Somewhat amused in reading this that many of us have the same problem. My battery door on my DSC-W1 is broken also, and am wondering if anyone has been successful in replacing it yet? Or, has anyone found a repair shop that completed the task? Paula has been gracious enough to share the repair manual with many of you, but I have not heard if it was helpful or not? So, I am reluctant to ask for it also. Not sure whether to use duct tape, or look for another camera? Please advise if fixed! Thanks.

It appears many of you have not been able to dismantle the camera, so I have put together a quick guide. It is somewhat of a fiddly process, so not for the average Joe! I would also advise anti-static precautions when playing around with the camera.

Step 1 - Remove the front and back covers of the camera - 6 screws in total. The microphone can be separated from the front cover by gently pulling it from its socket.

Step 2 - The control switch block (top piece of camera) can then be removed from the main assembly by unclipping it from both ends, and carefully disconnecting its cable from the mainboard.

Step 3 - Disconnect the flash unit's cable from the mainboard by first flicking the black part of the clip up towards you and then gently prying it from the slot. The flash block can then be removed by jiggling it about to dislodge the two clips holding it in place. The manual recommends discharging the capacitors with a 1k-ohm, 1W resistor.

Step 4 - Remove the bottom tripod mount piece from the camera by unscrewing the "strap" (DC ground plate) holding it in place, and unclipping it from underneath the memory stick door.

Step 5 - Disconnect the two lens block cables from the mainboard and then lift the lens assembly from the chassis.

Step 6 - Disconnect the cable leading to the control switch board (located at the back of the camera) and also the power cable to the battery compartment from the mainboard. Remove the two screws attaching the mainboard to the battery compartment.

Step 7 - Turn the camera over so the back is now facing you. Open the battery compartment and remove the screw attaching it to the main assembly.

Step 8 - Remove the two screws attaching the control switch board to the main chassis, and the screw attaching the USB connector board to the battery compartment. You should now be able to remove this section and have access to the remaining two screws attaching the battery compartment to the main chassis.

Step 9 - Remove these two screws and undo the two clips holding the LCD panel in place. The battery compartment should now be able to be removed with a bit of jiggling around. The LCD will now be unclipped so I disconnected it also.

Step 10 - Insert new battery compartment and reverse the disassembly process.

Seems like Sony intentionally designed a flimsy battery door that is hard to replace. If its not intentional its inexcusable. Here is a tip- Get some good epoxy. Cut a piece of a small paper clip and glue it in place on the door so it will slide under the two notches on the camera body. I did it and it works.
My Nikon Coolpix 5200 door pops out easily to replace. Why cant Sony get its act together?

Paula,

Could you send me the service manual for the W1? I just had my lens jam in the closed position and won't open or close now. Hopefully not too complex of a problem to fix after looking at the manual.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Paula, or anyone who benefitted from her generosity...

My lens is also stuck on my DSC-W1. Could you please send a copy of the repair pdf to me as well?

I'm pretty much resigned to buying a new camera, and that's made me much more willing to tear into the DSC-W1!

Thanks,
Patrick

Hello, if anyone could send me a copy of the service manual I'd be very grateful.
halfdoor@gmail.com

Can't believe there are other people who have the same problem I encountered.
I bought this camera for my Mother when it first came out.
Back then it had one of the biggest screens. =)
She used it well for several years and just recently dropped it, breaking the little hinges on the battery flap.
She felt bad about it and I promised that I can fix it for her.

But then it was Christmas time and I got her a new one...
Now I am planning to fix it and keep it for myself.

Send me your email address and I can get you a copy of the manual. BTW, I eventually went out and got a new camera rather than try to replace the battery compartment and lid. Good luck with that.

Hi
I gave my Sony DSC-W1 to my mother last year but it appears blurry dark spots on the pics taken. I think i should try to clean the camera, but before i attack it with my screwdriver i think it would be helpful to read the service manual first!
I should be wery thankful if someone who has the pdf could send it to me?

Hello Michael,

I got the part from VideoLabs (videospare@yahoo.com)
They only take PayPal and it was $30 USD including shipping.
One thing is, they are located in India.
It took about 10 days to get to me.
But they were able to get me an original Sony part and the box came well packed.

Give them a shot if you can't find it local.
I also think you can contact Sony directly.

Good luck with your project!
Let me know if I can be of any help.

Hi everyone,

I have a Sony DSC-W1, and a friend of mine suggested to me that I visit this site for some help. Right now the power button, and shutter button make a funny 'crunchy' sound when pressed to turn on/off or to take a pic; Also my shutter cover outside of the lens (when camera is powered on/off cover opens/closes) doesn't open right away, takes a while to open up now. What I think the problem is that there is debris/dried liquor (from my clubbing/drinking/sharing with others to see the pics. nights) that has accumulated inside. I want to open up the camera and clean it out, but I dunno if that's a good idea, does anyone have suggestions/tricks I can do before opening this camera up? Thanks

Hi everybody,
I have mailed videospare@yahoo.com to order a battery compartment but sofar no answer received. In Holland the Sony sparepart cost 58 euro at Sony and I think that it is ridiculous far to much for such an item. Has anybody ordered the sparepart besides Halfdoor at Videospare? Maybe they don't deliver in Europe? If I see the prices of the new Sony w-serial cameras I ask myself if all the trouble repairing is al worthed by now. I payed 470 euro 2 and 1/2 year ago for the W1. And I will never buy a Sony camera again if I cannot repair my old W1 camera. What a lack of service!

I understand your frustration. That is the one reason I "canned" my DSC-W1 and bought a new digital camera with better capabilities. I don't think Sony is aware of the battery compartment problems on the W1's.

Hi Steve,
yes, I am getting frustrated. Aside of that stupid thing of not able to close the battery-compartment the camera works fine. (although it killed also a new 1 gig memorycard once: C:13:01 ERROR) Did you really throw away your camera? And what camera do you have now? I bet not a Sony?

Hey, I've sent you a copy of the service manual. The E:61:00 error indicates a problem with the 'lens drive circuit' according to the manual, from failure in the focus/zoom initialisation. It also says to contact a Sony service centre, so there doesn't appear to be an easy fix. My guess is Sony will try and replace the whole SY-102 board seeing as they never actually 'fix' anything, costing quite a bit more than an equivalent new camera. Have fun!

Hello Deven,

I have sent you the service manual. I wasn't able to fix my lens as the auto-cover mechanism had broken off inside. Also, the manual doesn't really go into that much detail. Parts these days are manufactured to be disposable units it seems, so if worst comes to worst you might have to get a replacement lens block assembly from a Sony dealer or http://www.partstore.com if you live in the US or Canada.

Sometimes it does work again but after a couple of times turning on and off, it keeps stuck again. If anyone could email me a copy of the manual! Thanks a lot!

Hello Everyone,

It has been a bad day for me today and hopefully someone may help me out.

My little cousin dropped my DSC-W1 down the stairs and now the battery compartment doesnt close :\ and i have a wedding to go to on Thurseday and i cant take any pics. I have purchased the battery cover lid for $50! man i cant believe how sony rips you off for such a tiny plastic piece.

Anyways my brother will fix it for me but sony has advised to get a repair manual to replace it, and i cant find any place?

Would anyone here have the repair manual so that i can atleast get this wirking before the wedding?

Cheers to anyone that can atleast help me out with this.

Hi everyone,
I have the same stuck-lens problem with my Sony DSC-W1 as many of you do. It goes away for a while by pulling the batteries out but reappears quickly. Was any of you able to fix it using the repair manual. If yes, I would highly appreciate if someone forwards it to me too.
Thanks.

Ok...I didn't see anyone who has had my problem yet. I was using my mom's DSC-W1 tonight, and I had it set to record video. I recorded for maybe 15 seconds. When I tried to play what I had just recorded...the video started at the end and played backwards while making the most annoying high pitch sound you have ever heard. When the video reached the beginning of the recording, it faded out to a bright red screen, and flashed UFUGDUP in big black letters. I had no idea why it happened, so I turned it off and put it on the kitchen counter.

Afterwards...my 2 year old nephew pulled it off the counter. When it hit the floor, the little clippy things on the battery door broke off.

So would anyone like to share the manual?

Sorry to be so archaic in my camera and not being the same model as mentoned in this thread, but other than the battery cover I am having the same issues (zoom) plus anything else you can think of, basically it is dead.

I believe my daughter added some water to my CyberShot DSC P71, in fact I think it went swimming - I know it's older, I actually use a Canon EOS now, but I would love to repair this, and after many searches through google, this is the only site I could find. I know it's much older than your models.

Being a "want to know how it works", my camera is in about 5 pieces right now, with one stripped screw and 4 that won't come out, I belive I have removed at least 12 to 15. My concern is putting it back together, I am pretty good about keeping the parts (screws, labeled then taped together, but wow it comes apart really strange.

If any one has a repair manual for this or something close, I would really appreciate being pointed in the right direction or would be happy to help someone with the cost (reasonably) if they had to purchase it from a supplier.

Thanks tons.... or... oh well! :)
Beth

I also got many pdf copies from you guys. Thanks so much again&again. My problem was the flash light of the camera never working. I tried DIY for very long time. But finally, it looked to me like a circuit, or IC was broken and need to be replace. I went to the repair shop, Vimon Camera, and the owner there replaced an IC for me with the total repair cost of $40 with a warranty of 6 month. The repair shop's website is www.vimoncamera.com. You guys can try to visit the website or contact the store. It may solve your problem. Please feel free to contact me if you need help.

I should open the camera in order to find and clean the ccd.... Where can I find these instructions?
Sorry for the disturb, but since I'm just a newbie, not a technician ;oP , I'm afraid to do something wrong (and more dangerous for my camera)!

Tnx again,

Hal9000

Hi again. From what I have seen the Level 1 Manual is the instruction manual that came with the camera, and the Level 3 Manual is just more detailed circuit board diagrams. The Level 2 Manual (general repair) seems the most suited to your purpose. As for Bill, I'm sending you a copy of the manual now. Have fun!

Hello Everyone,

I am so glad I found this forumÂ…reading the threads it seams I am in good company. My Sony DSC-W1 has a broken battery compartment door also. Can any one e-mail me the LEVEL 2 Manual? With WarwickÂ’s instructions and sites to get the part, I will try repairing myself. A rubber band is working OK for the moment.

Thanks in advance.

If you have broken tabs on the battery cover it is quite simple to replace the cover. It will take only a minute however where is the cheapest place to get a new cover? To replace it open the door press down on it and slide it forward. Slide a small screwdriver from the back to release it and slide it completelly off. Now you just slide the new one on and it's done.

Okay, but the control block you're talking about is not actually that hard to replace. It just involves removing the front and back covers of the camera, unclipping it from the frame and removing the cable from it's slot.

Thanks again,

I noticed that in the guide, (except the cable you just mentioned, thanks for that info)

but replacement parts here in my country is quite expensive, (add a little and you get a brand new cam, with better specs since the dsc w-1 is a bit old now)

I'll try to think about playing with the cam :)

Replacement Battery Door from prophotosd on Ebay:

I ordered the replacement door and got it the next day in the mail ($9.95 + $1.00 shipping). It is an after market replacement so it isn't exactly the same fit but it is working great! My husband replaced it yesterday and I am back to using my camera again.

If just your battery door is broken (and not the tabs on the holder) then this is a great, economical option to get it working again. I lived with the broken battery door for a year before it got so bad I couldn't use the camera any more.

Thanks to everyone for the manual and the advice on finding the spare part!

You can find the battery holder piece (35$) in the following shop :

It's possible to buy only the door (around 10$) on Ebay.

The manuals given by Hal90000 are not infected. They have been really usefull since I managed in replacing the batery holder and cleaning the ccd in about 1 hour.

I have also dicovered that a small ant died inside my camera. It explains why the batteries could not last more than 40 pictures.

My camera is almost new now :)

Hello,

Wow! It's so nice to stumble across a support group for DSC-W1-owners-with-broken-battery-door-tabs! I am looking forward to checking out the manual and possibly repairing mine myself.

BUT! One thing that concerns me is, even when I put brand spanking new batteries in the camera and hold the battery door shut tightly the camera still flashes the no charge indicator and shuts itself off. Has any one else experienced this added complication? I'm worried that just replacing the door is not going to solve the problem.

I'm on the verge of giving in and getting a new camera but then I couldn't use my wonderful MPK-WA marine pack anymore! :P

Any advice is much appreciated!

Thanks,
Heather

Solution to stuck lens problem:

Several people (on another forum) had fixed the stuck lens issue by banging the camera lightly. I was quite skeptical, but tried anyway. I banged the camera against the palm of my hand several times, also lightly against a hard serface and sure enough the problem went away. The camera is back to normal.

Good luck,
Ray

Sure apprecaite your help.

Dude, this thread is for Sony DSC-W1 owners. Nevertheless, try here: http://www.eserviceinfo.com/index.php?what=search2&searchstring=Coolpix There are no perfect matches but there may be some similarities between cameras.

Can someone please email me the Sony DSC-W1 repair manual ... I tried the HAL9000 site, but it is "blocked" at my work ...

My camera decided not to open whent he power is turned on ... it says "Turn the power off and on again" ... other than that, it has severed me very well for 2.5 years.

Thx ...

Hey warwick, the turboupload link seems to work, but once I download the zip file and open it, I get an error when trying to extract? It doesn't even get to the stage where it asks me the password for uncompressing?
Gives me error like "unknown method [filename], cannot execute blah"

Is there any chance you could host or zip the files without them being in an exe? That might do the job. Or try sending me over a working version of that zip?

thanks for making this available!

p.s tried it on two different computers and downloaded it twice, so i think its gotta be the file

I was lucky I bought my DSC-W1 at Costco. I had the camera for 2 years. I paid $326.22 for the package, camera, case and tripod.

My friend said Costco would take the camera back. I went to Costco yesterday and returned the camera, I got my money back.

I figured why fix the battery door when it might break again.

Costco has changed their return policy, 90 days only for electronic equipment, computers, cameras, TVs etc.

I ordered a NikonCoolpix P5000 from Beach Camera. You get a 1 G card and free shipping. I paid $349.00. It's 10 meg. and has a hot shoe for optional flash. I ended up paying $22.78 after getting my money back for the DSC-W1.

Does anyone know how to replace the shutter button on a DSC-H2? Which piece has to come off to do this - is it the adjoining black plastic piece or the camera has to be dismantled from behind fully? Please respond as to how exactly to do this.

Hi Steve, Warwick, Paula, or anyone, Does anyone of you know how to replace the shutter switch in a DSC-H2 ? I have a manual with the disassembly but that disassembly is from behind, and the last thing I would come across is the shutter switch - so complicated procedure!! There should be an easy was by removing the plastic piece around the switch. Anyone has the method, or manual that tells this or the know-how to do this? Please help.

This page is for DSC-W1 owners looking for a service manual. The DSC-H2 is a totally different camera from a different line. I would need to see the manual to know how it's put together. If you are not confident in taking your camera apart I suggest you take it in to a camera shop, or ask around other forums for DSC-H2 owners.

Hi Warwick, Thanks for the response. Well, I am confident in doing it but what I meant is, the disassembly shown in the manual starts from behind. It is obviously NOT to replace the shutter button. There must be a simple procedure to replace the button. I would appreciate if you could find that method for me. Thank you much.

Hi Warwick, It is part of the manual (section 2 - 7-8 pages) but not on disk so I could not send it. I was told it is part of original Sony repair manual and it shows the disassembly. Please check your manual for this specific problem - DSC-H2 shutter button replacement. Also please let me know whether you have the repair manual for DSC-S650, and T100. I would appreciate your help. Awaiting your response.

@ Nall: Each Sony camera has their own specific repair manual. The one that is available on this page is for the Sony DSC-W1. I'm not sure what gave you the idea that I had the DSC-H2 manual, but I can't help you without one I'm afraid.

@ Bob: Here is the link for the DSC-W1 manual http://wockanz.files-upload.com/files/249901/SonyDSC-W1ServiceManual.pdf

Hi Warwick, I'm trying to follow your step by step instruction. In step 6, how do I disconnect the power cable from the mainboard to the battery compartment? It's a orange/copper piece right?

Yeah I seem to remember it was. Sorry, I haven't used that camera in a long time, as I have since upgraded. From reading through the instructions again I can see they aren't that clear, but basically if you're replacing the whole battery compartment you just strip off everything thing attached to it.

While this quick fix for a battery cover that will not
lock on a Sony DSC-W1 is crude it's effective.
Take a large head 1/4-20 screw that is shortened to appx. 3/8" and a 5/16 flat washer (appx. 1"dia.) Put the screw thru the washer and thread it into the tripod mounting
hole, gently tighten the screw and washer in position over the battery cover. Done!

Ok so apparentyl the battery door breaking is common with this camera ? (DSC-W1) I have used tape on mine for over a year and I really want to get it fixed. Can you order just the door or do you have to order the whole compartment ?? Is it fixable yourself ? I ordered the part and lost the dame thing somewhere but we starting trying to repair it and I saw all the connections to it inside and thought I shouldn't do it by myself. SO is it do-able ? Or is there a way to just replace the door ?

I just got my camera W1 fixed. I bought the part from Sony for 30 dollars and took it to a repair shop where the guy popped the old door off and slid the new on on with out having to take the camera apart. The battery door has a little clip on it the if you slide a needle or something small in there it will slide right off. The only bad part is that you will end up with a unused battery case.

People, if you'd actually READ part of this page before posting comments you would find links for the manual. Nevertheless, here it is again: http://wockanz.files-upload.com/files/249901/SonyDSC-W1ServiceManual.pdf
As for replacing the battery compartment door, it appears the door can be swapped for a replacement one without removing the whole compartment. There are a few sellers on ebay selling just the doors, otherwise the whole battery compartment can be purchased and the door swapped over.
