Is the rechargable battey (Ni-MH, Cyber-shot, 2000mAh) usable still ?

The rechargable battey (Ni-MH, Cyber-shot, 2000mAh) can be used to take 100 photos for Sony Cyber-shot 3X camera) two years ago. But now I have to charge it after 20 photos. Why ? Does it mean I should buy new rechargable battery in replace ?

C.C.,

AA NiMH batteries gradually lose the capacity to hold charge over their life cycle. It seems likely that your issue with these batteries is simply that they are aging. Most manufacturers rate the life expectancy of AA NiMHs at 1000 charges, but that number is highly theoretical and depends very much on environmental conditions and the ways in which the batteries are used (i.e., do they go through a full charge/discharge cycle before you charge them again, etc).

You may also want to ensure that you aren't letting too much time pass between charging and using the batteries. NiMH cells self-discharge at a much higher rate than Alkalines and other batteries. If you let them sit for a month after charging they'll lose 20-25% of their charge (or more, depending on temperature).

Since AA NiMHs are so cheap, and since your camera only requires two to operate, I'd recommend picking up a 4-pack from your local shop and seeing if it fixes the problem. While you're at it, I'd upgrade from your 2000mAh to 2500 or 2700mAh. You'll get an even longer charge from those. Good luck!

NiMH batteries need to be really discharged before recharging to sustain their capacity. It is known as "memory effect". If you recharge them when they are not close to empty yet they will have a tendency to show up as nearly empty when in reality there is a lot of charge inside. If you keep doing this it might prematurely spoil them. I used to recharge my AAs every evening, after 10-20 shots sometimes, killed my batteries in a matter of a few months. Then read about how these batteries work and now only recharge when my camera completely shuts off due to power loss.

I guess I cannot get a remote for my Cybershot DSC W1 camera? I wanted to send a picture of my husband and myself to our son but without someone else to shoot it for us we are out of luck right?

DJA,

Pressing down on the W1's 4-way pad should activate the camera's self-timer mode. Using this mode, you can set the timer, press the shutter release, run and pose, and the camera will take a picture about 10 seconds later.

In the future, you might want to post your question as a new question, not as a response to someone else's question. It'll be noticed more quickly that way. :)

Good luck!
