It's sort of going to be a bit complicated, but for the sake of your new born son, perhaps it is worth trying.

The fact :
your pictures are OK with win XP and not so with Windows Vista.
The way out :
install XP in your new computer and use xp to download your pictures.
How to do it :
re-partition your hard disk and install XP in the 2nd partition so that you will end up with a multiple boot system.
Hard Disk can be re-partition using one of the commercial software such as Acronis Partition Expert.
However, you may be able to do it using Windows vista.
Details of the procedure are given in this article .
as well as this article

Read the articles carefully, print it out if you can, and decide for yourself whether you are confident of following the instructions. Otherwise ask for assistance from a friend who is familiar with computer.

So much I can think of and hope all ends well for you. Meanwhile carry on taking the pictures of your new born son because the camera should be OK, using a new memory stick if necessary.
Don't worry even if the xp installation fails, because you can always get the studios to print the pictures for you. Congratulations about your new born baby and good luck to you.

Well... that's kind of a long and expensive process for downloading pictures. First try to go to the Sony site and see if they have any software with your camera compatible with Vista. If not, its also possible your camera itself and vista don't get along (more likely than the pictures and vista not getting along). So, go to an electronics retail store, like Best Buy, find a memory card reader that reads memory stick duos, then use that to plug into your computer and download pictures. That should solve your problem and costs only about $15.

There has been many reports of Windows Vista not recognizing card readers.

For that reason, I hesitate to advise people to hunt for card readers when there is no ready answer for the appropriate driver or whatever that cause the problem, more so with the $15 ones.

As an example, you can take a look at this report or this report
