The camera lens will not extend on its own. I rcv the "turn off power and on again". I have to assist the lens out

it tries to cycle out starts to extend, retracts and continues this cycle for about 10 secs.

First I would check your batteries. Underpowered batteries can easily affect lens movement and camera performance. Digital cameras require a lot of juice and as such, using Alkalines simply isn't good enough anymore. You need high powered batteries which have a power rating (mAh) of at least 2500.

Secondly, clean your battery contacts. Dirty contacts can cause your camera to not get all the energy it needs, duplicating that issue. A pencil eraser does the job nicely.

Lastly, try resetting the camera, then updating the firmware. Sometimes firmware can corrupt, needing to be reloaded. Outside of that, with the camera's age, you may be looking at a repair.
