Choosing a new camera

I am really torn between the Sony H5, Canon S3 IS and Canon A710 IS. I want to get a camera that will give me some extra telephoto power for taking long range photos, on occasion, but I am really not sure if I need the 10x zoom. I am by no means an avid photographer, but I will be using the camera on a safari. If anyone has comments, suggestions, or opinions they would be appreciated.

The Canon S3 is a nice piece of gear. It has the 12x optical. A friend of mine went on a safari, he is a big camera 'nut'. He has three Nikon dSLRs, with lots of lenses. He said to get 'great' shots he absolutely needed a long telephoto. I'm not sure which tele was the most useful, but I bet it was at least as long as the 12x zoom on the Canon S3.

I am not implying that you have to have a dSLR for the safari. After all, you will be using the camera long after you get back from the trip. So the S3 is a great all-around camera.

Another route is to get the Nikon D40, a bit more money but less than $600 w/ lens. However, that lens that comes with it tops out at 55mm, so you would need a good tele for the safari as well.

I have a Canon A710. I bought it over the S3 because it is much smaller. I like to keep a camera in my pocket, rather than around my neck. But the S3 is a much nicer camera.
