black display

My DSC-H1's display is black with white lettering that says 'turn camera on and off'. When I turn it on and off, i get the same black display with the same message. Help! I love my camera and can not use it. Does this need repaired??

Have you tried reinitializing the camera? Also, downloading and installing any available firmware updates. But if it persists, then it may be that it needs a repair.
