Does the Nikon Cybershot accept standard lens filters?

I'm returning an Olympus SP-550 because of a ridiculously inane lens filter system.

Will the Cybershot H9 afford me the simple luxury of attaching basic filters onto the end of the lens and still allow the cap to cover it all?

Hi Bill,

Sony manufacturer's home page states that this camera comes with lens adapter tread. So you should be able to attach filters. But I don't think that you can use the same cap to cover filters or other attachments. Point and shoot camera lenses are very small and fragile so the lens adapter usually allows to attach to the camera body instead of lens itself.

Bill

I own an DSC-H1 to which you can attach a filter ONLY via an adaptor. The only superzoom which takes a filter directly (that I know of) is the LUMIX FZ50.

Question: Did you determine if you can attach a filter direct to the lens barrel of the SP-550?

It appears that the filter size for the H9/H7 is 74mm which is LARGE and from searching the web can only find sony offering up the filter for it. no price yet.. but imagine it will be between $75-100.

Michael is exactly right. The filter size is 74mm, and the only place I have found the filters for this camera is from Sony directly. Here's a link:

I just purcashed the Sony HSC-D9, and have purchased the available filters and additional lenses. They are only available from sony, and are roughly priced as follows: Multicoat Protector, 49.95; Polarizing Filter, 109.99; Wide Angle Conversion Lens, 159.99; Telephoto Conversion lens, 169.99. Unlike my Nikon SLR, I can not find conversion rings to allow the HSC-D9/D7 to accept lenses other than the availble Sony models. Though, it looks like this is pretty standard for most of the full function digital models. If you really want to use an aray of filters and lenses, you probably will do better, in the long run, to bite the bullet and get an SLR

Video Camera Center in Miami and a number of other sites (Google it) offer the Bower 74mm UV filter at reasonable prices; I paid $19.00. You can attach a 74mm-77mm step-up ring to the Bower filter and then get a 77mm lens cap from any number of suppliers; I got mine from Boca Photo (also in Miami). Step up rings are available on Ebay.
