Well, for me it depends on price factor now. Both has some good and bad points. While I begin to like my new H9 slowly, I still miss my old S2 sometimes. Technically speaking canon has some advantage over H9 on Image quality, Image Stabilization (very Imp for high zoom camera) and Sound Recording but for general use both are okay type. My personal experience suggest that H9 gives more blur picture in low light conditions (like parties/ball room) than my old S2 specially if the distance of object from camera is more. Look for good deal and buy whichever is cheaper at the same time give some advantage to S5. Which means if prices are similar buy S5. If you want to do more research go to www.dpreview.com/ and www.pricegrabber.com
Reads user comments in pricegrabber, they are very helpful.
I hope this will help you a bit.... All the best

Thank you. Price is not a factor. I need a camera that has wide angle and tele minimum 10x. I try not to carry around multiple lens. However, good picture quality is important too. Cannot stand noisy photos. Seldom blow up more than 8 x 10 in. Read DPreview.com
Confused.

After reading further, I am now deciding on S5 vs G9. I will be going on an African safari. Will be taking tons of pix. Which would be a better camera. However, with either one I still need a wide angle lens.
Advise please.

Very simple... S5 has better optical zoom (12x) than G9 (6x)...in your African safari, 12x is helpful...but at the same time S5 has 8Mega Pixels where as G9 has 12MP with more shooting speed... now its upto u to decide based on ur requirement
