file error message when viewing picture and memory stick

I got my T30 about 6 months ago along with a 1 GB memory stick pro duo. Recently, I have a problem in viewing the picture I have taken using the camera's viewing picture. At first it displays a smaller size picture centered in the LCD. Then I took another picture just to see if the problem is consistent. When I want to view the picture I had just taken I got a "File Error" message.

I consult the manual, there's no instruction on how to deal with this particular problem. I then tried to erase all the pictures in my memory stick just to see if it had any effect. After doing this, I took another picture just to test if the problem still there or not. It turns out after I deleted all my pictures (312 pictures stored in the memory stick), the problem is fixed. I can view the pictures with no problem.

What annoys me is that when I had this problem I'm only using half of the capacity of the memory stick. Is there a compatibility issue with the 1 GB memory stick pro duo or is it just my memory stick that is corrupted? (Note: prior to this, I rarely took out the memory stick from the camera)

That is an interesting question. It does seem that your memory stick may have a defect, I would suggest trying to return it. What brand is it?

Changed to SD 1 GB memory. Now the error message is different, but the result is the same. After pic no. 40, the display shows the message FILE ERROE C:13: something. Why SONY is not providing any support to customers ??

Same problem with DSC-W70 that I have here in China, using a Sony 1GB Memory Stick Pro bought with the camera... love the camera hate the problem. Basically same symptoms as others are highlighting, picture is shown small in centre of screen then just comes up at corrupt and not recognised.

What is this? Memory corrupted or something else? ? ?

I was having the same problem with my 4GB memory stick pro duo, when i took more than 50 pictures with my camera (dsc-w90) i would get the blue screen with the file error message. I'm guessing you bought the memory stick on ebay right? I bought mines there and it turns out it's a fake one. If you also bought it there then you most likely have a fake memory stick because I found out that most of the memory sticks sold on ebay are fake, to help you figure out if you have a fake one or not check out this guide or google fake memory stick pro duo.

hmmmm, I don't know if mine is fake or not, I have a DSC-W55 and am using 4GB cards, after 2GB the photos become corrupted, but the computer reports it as a 4GB card and the camera says the disk is only half full, usually fakes are 25% the reported size (size you paid for) not 50% the reported size.

Also, video on the camera is very unreliable, most video files become corrupted, very short video works sometimes but not always.

I´m thinking maybe the cybershots have a bit of an issue, but then again maybe my 4GB cards are only 2GB, I´ll do a bit more investigating

What everyone seems to be talking about is how to identify if the memory card is fake or real, where they got it from and blah blah blah.

Its quite clear we all got some dodgy memory cards.

Ive tried downloading a bunch of freeware programs that claim they can sort the problem out, but they are all sh**. I dont really want to pay for any programs......which leads us to the question, IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE WHO KNOWS HOW I CAN VIEW AND SAVE THESE PICTUREs, WHICH CURRENTLY ARE SHOWING AS A BLUE SCREEN AND LABLED FILE ERROR.

As Pasha wrote on the 19/12/06"I have a problem in viewing the picture I have taken using the camera's viewing picture. At first it displays a smaller size picture centered in the LCD. Then I took another picture just to see if the problem is consistent. When I want to view the picture I had just taken I got a "File Error" message".

Again, we are all going round in circles, doesnt matter which dark alley we bought it from or which dodgy guy in the pub sold it to us.

WE ALL have a dodgy memory card.

The question still nobody can answer is, IS THERE ANYWAY OF SAVING THE PICTURES WITHOUT DELETING THEM FOR GOOD, WITHOUT FORMATTING THE MEMORY CARD. I really want to save these pictures somehow, and with out having to pay anything. LETS ONLY POST SOLUTIONS IF POSSIBLE. OR THINGS WE HAVE TRIED AND DIDNT WORK, THIS WAY WE CAN ELIMINATE THE USELESS METHODS AND PERHAPS COME ACROSS A SOLUTION.

I had a Sony DSC-P10 using two 2GB cards I purchased with the camera. Both sticks and camera were purchased from a national retail electronics store. I never had issues with "blue screens"/"file error" and was always able to pack close to the 2GB amount on each stick without fail. Pics and Vids.

I just recently (7 days ago) purchased a Sony DSC-W90 from the same national retail electronics store. I am using the same 2GB memory sticks I used with my DSC-P10. Everything looks well until I go and review the pictures/videos in the camera. About every 10-15-20 pictures apart I get to see the pic for a split second and then the "blue sreen"/"file error" pops up, this also happens about half way through reviewing some video.

Bad memory sticks? Not here! A lemon for a camera? More than likely! I am exchanging for another DSC-W90 and will see what happens.

My point is it may or may not be the stick for everyone. As far as retrieving the corrupted data, I gave up.

Yeah, the dodgy ones I bought on ebay are easy to identify compared to genuine sony ones, on the back of the stick there is writing -

MSX-M2GS = Fake Chinese crap
MSX-M2GS - If the ''S'' is in Italics then it's possibly a genuine sony

A quick test at the shop is to record a video about 5 minutes in length, the fake ones will give you a corrupt file whereas a genuine sony will record a video for whatever length your memory stick has capacity for with no problems.

The fake ones seem to give corrupt video files if you record much more than 30 seconds or a minute.

Corrupt file recovery needed!!!

Whats annoying is the camera shown me the images in review, then I got the file error message. There is 3mb of info there, surely there is some way of reading these corrupt files?

I have tried several programs and so called image recovery programs and none seem to do the job.

Can anyone recommend a program that can recover these files, there are a lot of us out there that need your help!

Guys, I have done quite a lot reseach on this. I have a T100 cybershot and got the same problem as others - the infamous "File Error". I have tried official Sony 1G and other memory cards (from Lexar). They all ended up the same error. I worried there is something wrong with the camera. Does anyone know whether we can refund it.

I'm from India. I have a Sony cyberShot W55 with a 1 GB memory stick pro duo.
When I take pictures it will show up extremely tiny in Playback Mode, and when I transfer them over to the computer or try to print them, it will show this colored strip at the bottom of the picture.
Out of 10 pictures, only 8 was normal.

What is wrong?

I finally found the solution for file error, especially for lost videos for Cybershot error files. Go to http://www.erightsoft.com/S6Kg1.html then download SuperConverter. Then drag the error file to the converter, Choose convert to "mpg vcd compliant" then click encode active file. MAGIC! The file is restored. However the dimensions are converted to 11:9 aspect (or you may chose other sizes to look like your original video) , this is better than nothing! This is my contribution to http://www.erightsoft.com/S6Kg1.html for coming up with such a wonderful software for free, I've used it many times and very reliable. You may try converting the same for lost pictures too to picture format or just crop the jagged line with Adobe Photoshop.

Cybershot is a garbage camera and Sony is not interested to solve this perpetual problem.
I lost all my pics which I took when I was on vacation in Turkey. The only option is to go again for vacation to Turkey.

Try to buy Olympus or Minolta
