Two New Canon Cameras Available for Preorder

The S5 IS continues Canon's lauded extended zoom line, while the SD850 IS offers big megapixels with image stabilization in a tiny package.

The S5 IS follows up on the much loved S2 IS and the more recent S3 IS. Don't ask us what happened to the S4, apparently they just skipped right over it. In any case, the S5 offers roughly similar specifications to the already satisfying S series extended zoom cameras, with the added bonus of a larger, 8-megapixel sensor and an roomier 2.5-inch swivel LCD. For consumers interested in getting into powerful extended-zoom cameras, the S5 IS should definitely be on your list.

The SD850 IS is another classy ultracompact, hot on the heels of the wildly popular SD750 and SD1000 models. The SD850 IS isn't intended to replace the SD800 IS, as you might expect, but rather the SD700 IS. While Canon's naming convention might not make sense, a timely upgrade on that older model. We strongly suggest that smart shoppers take another look at the SD700 IS now; it's still a decent camera, and is sure to go down in price because of this new successor. The SD850 IS has 8 megapixels, over the SD700's 6 megapixels.

Both of these cameras feature Canon's DIGIC III image processor, which means they should have improved "face detection," and better focus in on the faces of those you're taking pictures of.
