Our reviewer is absolutely smitten with the Canon A2000. Read why she thinks it's the "best camera available for the price point" and can satisfy users of all types and skill levels. By Brenda Paro

It's been awhile since I bought a new point and shoot camera, so typically when I write these reviews, I'm also considering whether or not the camera I'm currently handling is one I might want to buy for myself. Let me go on record as saying that the Canon Powershot A2000 IS just made the top of my personal list.

This sleek little camera is a joy to use, with fantastic image quality, easy controls, fast operation, and intuitive design. It also offers a truly impressive range of controls for users from amateur to advanced. As of this date, I'm going to go ahead and call this one the best camera available for the price point, and I think I may hold onto that opinion for awhile.

The body of the A2000 IS is impressive from the get-go. It has a sort of industrial look, with a dark pewter gun metal finish and a black grip on one end. It's true that it's somewhat bulkier than you might expect, with a slightly thicker profile and heavier weight than many of the credit card-sized cameras you see today. On the other hand, it's thinner and smaller than previous A series models; Canon has removed the large swollen grip on one end and slimmed down the body in general. It's easy to hold, fairly substantial in your hand, and doesn't feel like it's going to break if you use it. Considering everything that's packed inside this camera, I think it's pretty impressive that they were able to make it as small as it is, and it's surprisingly comfortable to handle.

This camera features a crystal clear 3-inch wide angle LCD, 10 megapixel sensor, outstanding 6x optical zoom, Face Detection, and Image Stabilization. The control set is much the same as most Canon models, with a variety of Scene modes and all the typical settings you'd expect; it also includes Canon's fairly new innovation, Easy mode, for amateur users (personally, I still can't find much difference between Easy mode and Auto mode, but I may just be missing it). What's more (and this is a big one), it includes full manual control for advanced users.

Start-up and shoot time are surprisingly quick, as is flash recovery time. I shot a variety of flash photos back to back and, possibly for the first time with a camera of this level, the wait time between photos was so insignificant that I didn't even notice it. Image quality is unsurpassed, with smooth, brilliant flash, low noise (ISO 3200 is pretty grainy, but still useable) and rich, accurate color reproduction. Image Stabilization works flawlessly and is a real bonus, particularly at the full 6x zoom.

Speaking of zoom, that 6x optical is perhaps the most impressive feature offered by the A2000 IS. With most cameras this size coming in at a 4x zoom, tops, this one is a huge leap forward in capability. What's more, the zoom itself is fast, quiet, and accurate. Even at full magnification, auto focus is sharp and accurate with little to no hunting time.

I expected quite a bit from the A2000 IS, and not only wasn't I disappointed; it surpassed my expectations in quite a number of ways. It's fast and easy to use, with flexible control options and gorgeous results. I seriously doubt there's anything better available for the price, and if my intuition is correct, I won't be the only one purchasing this camera sometime in the very near future.

I'm not sure what you mean by the shape... it is slightly bigger than the A720, but it is one of the newer flagship A series models, so it is probably the best A camera you can find. As far as intermediate picture taking... I would try and bump up to the SD, S5, or G9 series in Canon, they offer a lot more options.

It actually hasn't really been specified in any of the specs. My first inclination was to say no, but it looks like somebody that asked this same question actually called Canon to be sure, and they said you could zoom during video capture. I don't know if the information is 100% legitimate, but I would call Canon to be sure.

Nikon usually makes the best AA cameras, look to the L series in your price range if your price range is lower. Also the P series (only some of them though) use AA batteries, like the P50.

It's the equivalent of to 36 - 216 mm in 35mm. A little wide angle at 36, but there are better, wider ones out there.

Sort of, but not manually. Some of the newer cameras tend to adjust the power of the flash which adjusts the brightness depending on the ambient lighting, but this is usually only a small correction. To my knowledge, you can't do anything manually.

Nope. Sorry. What you can do, however, is to take a white plastic film canister and cut it to fit over it. Then you can diffuse the harshness of the flash.

Canon A2000 next shot delay (jplumbum — 10/17/2008)

I am looking for a camera to replace my SonyDSC P52. It is too big, not enough zoom and most of all too long of a delay between pics. I photograph horses and need something that will take one pic after another, but I also want it small enough that it's handy for family vacations, etc. I was looking at the Canon A2000 with 6x optical zoom and fairly small, but I want to know the delay b/w shots and also if there is much of a delay b/w when you press the button and the picture is actually taken. Thanks.

The shutter lag is pretty low on this camera, almost 0 (which is very good). The official tests say that the lag is 0.09 seconds, so you can hardly tell at all. I think the Canon A2000 is a good buy, the only other thing I may recommend is stepping up in price a little and getting the Canon SD880, which is also a terrific camera. Plus the SD880 has a wide angle lens if you're taking shots of large groups of people or landscapes.

That's actually dependent on a lot of things, like how fresh your batteries are, whether you're using the flash, how faster your memory card is, etc. But again, the A2000 is a pretty quick camera so I'd expect the average time in between shots to be pretty low, about 0.5 seconds.

Thanks for all your insight. I researched the SD880 that you mentioned and I think that is my new first choice. I am assuming that the next shot delay on that should be pretty low as well, similar to what you said for the A2000? Also, what type of memory card would you recommend in order to take successive shots as quickly as possible for the SD880?

Yes, the SD880 is also a fast camera. In order to get the best quality out of your camera, get a high speed SDHC card.

More and more cameras are going that route to make them lighter and smaller, unfortunately. But it isn't all plastic. Just the outside and perhaps the frame.

camera with batteries for extended cold weather outdoor trips (klfnewme — 11/11/2008)

I take backpacking trips with no electricity in low temps for weeks. I need a point&shoot with batteries that will last without recharge & through cold weather without me having to carry 4 extra sets. Which point and shoot uses AA that will also take lithium and /or NiMH ?

Well the problem is, that extreme cold affects the capacity of even the most robust batteries. So I don't see how you can avoid carring additional batteries or a recharge option. But my suggestion to you is to check out solar charging options. You can get a very compact solar charger that will enable you to charge your batteries in a few hours. If you have sun, you can charge batteries.

Yes, you can add B&W. As well as Vivid, Neutral, & Sepia. But my opinion is you're much better off applying photo effects with software after the fact. Not only do you have the benefit of an "undo" button on the menu bar, but you can also apply a wider range of options when doing the effect.

Can subjects be easily seen in outdoor bright sunlight without a optical viewfinder? (stargazer1 — 11/13/2008)

I have been looking at the Cannon Powershot 2000 and it doesn't have an optical viewfinder. I've noticed that it can sometimes be very difficult to see images through an LCD in very bright locations and almost impossible in bright sunlight. Should I be looking at models that have both the LCD and the optical viewfinder?

That's my opinion. Ambient light can really wreak havoc with being able to compose a picture using the LCD. And at night, that LCD can be rather bright on the eyes. A viewfinder is much better for photo composition. And it has an additional benefit, it doesn't use battery power which means the power can be used for what it's designed for ... taking pictures.

Well both get great reviews. My recommendation is to swing by imaging-resource.com and check out sample images from each. You can compare them side by side. But both cameras perform really well. I do like the SX10IS as it has compactibility, some manual settings, and a decent zoom.

For picture quality, I think there's too much MP here to work with. Let me explain. I came across an interesting article today about how more mega pixels is not necessarily a good thing. According to Image Engineering ( 6mpixel.org/en/? ) – a company that does testing of digital cameras for photo magazines in Germany – the quality of digital pictures has steadily decreased since the state of the art was six megapixels back in 2004. And because they don’t have a “dog in this hunt,” they put forth a compelling argument for buying new digital cameras with less mega pixels and not more.

The argument is essentially this: CCD chips on point and shoot cameras a smaller and as such, fitting in more pixels causes them to lose light sensivity. Sure, there’s more data on the chip, but the chip can’t absorb the light data and what it ends up with is a picture that has more noise than image quality. In addition, the more megapixels a camera has, the larger the lens it needs to provide the clarity it deserves and prevent diffraction due to a loss of detail with smaller apertures. But since we’re talking portable point and shoots here, those large lenses simply aren’t being made.

Finally, with larger mega pixels comes longer saving time due to their requires huge storage capacity, or more compression if not storing images in RAW format. The result is a noisier image and a dissatisfied camera user who thirsts for high quality and speed but fell into the trap of "more must mean better."

In the end, relying on a smaller MP that can balance all these needs may indeed be a better answer.

And remember that the Lithium battery means it's more compact and lighter, which can be of advantage when traveling, hiking, etc.

Hi there... For me the extra megapixels sometimes are worth since I use to take pictures from my kid on landscapes and sometime I notice that his face on one of the pictures is really nice so I can "cut it" to have only his face without lossing resolution... It also works when taking lots of pictures on a day out and later I come home and edit some pictures... It is nice having the extra megapixels in order to avoid quality decreasement on the final edited pictures. Anyway over 8 megapixels will be nice enough to cut a large part of the pictures...

Noise to a digital camera, was what grain was to a film camera. And it asserts itself into images in low light situations and at higher ISO settings. And it's a common problem with point and shoot cameras which are stuffed with more and more megapixels without a corresponding increase in chip size. The result is a chip that is less sensitive to light, not more. Additionally, with 99% of pictures taken snapshots (if they are printed at all), MP above 6-8MP won't even seen until photo sizes get above 8x10. So the "more MP is better" myth is just that ... a myth.

The SD1100IS is better rated than the A2K. It's also smaller. My recommendation is go with the SD1100IS. However, for comparison, you may want to check out this resource ( imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP... ). It takes pictures with each and you can compare them side by side.

I will be taking pics of kids activities and want least amount of delays in flash or capturing the picture once I've pressed the button. I do like some of A590IS manual options but mostly want a great point & shoot for the family. I'm a novice photographer.

It's called shutter lag ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shutt... ). It's the delay which happens between triggering the shutter and when the photograph is actually recorded. And what's interesting is, that DSLRs dont' have a lag issue at all. Or, it's nearly non existent. It's a common problem with point and shoot cameras. But there are ways to combat it.

1. Prefocus. Hold down the shutter half way to get a prefocus of the image you're shooting. When it changes, prefocus again. This will speed up your camera's performance during picture taking since it won't have to autofocus before it shoots the shot.

2. Use faster SD cards. Yes, there are faster cards and it does make a difference in writing the image file to the card. This is especially key if you're taking multiple or burst images.

3. Fresher batteries. Use alkalines at least. But I recommend using high energy batteries designed for digital photography. Varta is a good brand. They are usually sold in camera shops, are long lasting (because they are sold in small quantities) put out alot of energy.

4. Pan with the action. You can create some pretty cool shots by panning with your shot, focusing on your subject. This will create the effect of your subject in sharp contrast to the blurry background.

6. Stick with 100-400 ISO. Going higher will cause more noise/grain in your shots, particularly in darker settings.

Doing these, particularly prefocusing and panning with the action will cut your shutter lag by as much as 80%.

Well, you can get another memory card. And you should. Any memory card can fail or become corrupted. And when you're on vacation the last thing you want is to lose the opportunity to take pictures until you can recover that media card with a software utility. If your card goes bad, swapping another one for it at that moment is of advantage so you can keep taking pics. Then, later when you're in front of your PC, you can use a utility like "F-Recovery" ( filerecoverytools.com/produ... ) to get back your pictures and recover your card.

No need to lose the moment because you relied on one card one when several can solve that problem.

But to "upgrade" the existing card is probably a call of the company you're ordering it from.

I recommend a USB memory card reader over connecting the camera directly. Place your memory card into it. Then all you need to do is insert the SD card (your PC will recognize it as another drive), and then simply drag and drop wherever you want.

Once you have your picture onto your PC, then you can simply attach it to any email you wish to send out.

I know there is a HUGE difference between these 2 cameras but I really need help deciding which one would be best for me. I love all the features of the SX10 and would really love to have that camera but. Our camera is mostly used for pictures of the kids and such. I really want a camera that can grow with us as our children are young now. I want a camera that won't miss the quick cute moments like my current Olympus D-535 does. I also like the thought of the being able to use the camera for video in those instances where dragging out the camcorder isn't so easy. Do I go for the SX10 or would the A2000 be a better fit? Or is there another suggestion? I just want a really good camera that will make me happy with the results.

I think it largely depends on if you're wanting a more portable, shirt pocket option. THe SX10 has a larger zoom, so that may also play into it.

Ok...James...can you help me out a little bit more? Having a camera that fits in my pocket is not a huge deal...but having one that I like the results I get is. So if we leave size out of the issue ('cause I'm comfortable with that since, I checked it out in the store)...Would it be worth it for me to buy the SX10 for taking pics of the kids, close ups and farther away like at gymnastics but not using it for much else? I do really want that camera but I need to validate it to myself that it won't be overkill for what I'm going to use it for.

I think so. The SX10IS has the new DIGIC IV processor (the A2K has the previous III processor), which makes for very sharp and clear pictures and the chip is larger - meaning less noise in low light. So I'd go with the SX10 and get the zoom boost.

Which is better? canon A1000 IS or Canon SD1100 IS? (ladyrider — 02/28/2009)

My first digital camera was a Canon A60. I have been reading alot of reviews about some of these cameras and am not sure which one would best fit me. I like the idea of motion detection, digic III, and image stabilization. All I really want is to be able to go to watch Motocross and not miss the jumps cause my camera is to slow, without going to a SLR Pro camera. Someone please help me in my delimma.

thanks Steve, I went to flickr.com and saw the pics, however those are all outside. What about inside an arena with low light? I don't want to seem like a tard but that is not the only reason I want to take pics. I don't want to get into alot of fuss when I want to take a picture. want ease with power. sound to greedy?

a2000is has 6x optical zoom while a1000is only 4x, but on the other hand, a2000is doesn't have the optical viewfinder, while a1000is has.
so, please help me to decide which one is the best to buy?

Well, only you can decide if the extra 2x optical zoom is worth sacrificing the optical viewfinder. But I think the first time you're out at the company summer picnic on a really bright day, you're going to wish you had that viewfinder. Outside of that, they're pretty much the same camera.

We tried the Program AE and the auto mode. We were able to get the menu to show how many seconds and number of pictures, but the manual doesn't say how to set ok or what to do next.

Using the Self-timer

With this function, images are shot 10 or 2 seconds after the shutter button is pressed. This is useful when you want to take a memorable photo with everyone including yourself in the picture. The self-timer can be used in any shooting mode. In addition, you can set the delay time and number of shots (Custom Timer).

1. Press the [v] button to choose either (10 seconds), (2 seconds), or (custom) using [^] or [v] buttons
2. Press the <FUNC./SET> button to confirm the setting and the desired option then shows on the screen.
3. Shoot the image by pressing the shutter button.

* When the shutter button is pressed fully, the self-timer will activate and the self-timer lamp will blink.
* When the self-timer is set to 10 secs (2 secs), the shutter activates 10 (2) seconds after the shutter button is pressed fully.
* With the (Custom Timer) option, the specified number of shots are taken after the specified delay when the shutter button is pressed fully. You can change the delay time (0?10, 15, 20, 30sec.) and number of shots (1?10). When [Delay] is set to 2 or more sec., the self-timer sound begins to beep 2 sec. before the shutter releases. When [Shots] is set to more than 1, the self-timer sound only beeps before the first shot.

To Cancel the Self-Timer

Press the <FUNC./SET> button and then use the [^] or [v] buttons to display [display icon].

I love the idea of a small camera that can also capture decent video but my wife is a professional oil painter and wants to shoot paintings in her studio and I don't know if this will cut it.

I agree. But I also think you should consider lighting for your pictures as well. Like a good light box for paintings. Lighting can make all the difference no matter what camera you use. A good example which can be found here ( hammacher.com/publish/75335... ). You'll need a larger one, of course, but lighting is everything when you're wanting to up the quality of the image. And it's easier on the painting than a flash.

please help i just sold my sony cyber shot because i went to a concert and recorded it live the video was excelent but the sound was weak no bass just treble and no disturbence but im looking for something similar but that with hold's a good sound live is this a good choice or is there a nother camera that will record good quality sound at a laud concert please help thanks???

Concert sound is always going to be tough using a camera's microphone. Not sure if you'll find what you're looking for.

Not even close. Point and shoot cameras have tinny, omni-directional microphones that pic up everything. At best, it'll sound like you're in the cheap seats even if you've got good seats. No digital camera will be able to fulfill the needs you're looking for.

Sadly, no. No viewfinder at all. Just an oversized LCD which serves no other purpose but to drain your batteries faster.

SDHC memory card for A2000IS (enigmatictara — 06/26/2009)

I just bought canon A2000IS and would like to buy a memory card. I feel that SDHC card is better then SD card.If yes then which brand' card is best suitable with this camera. I would also want to know the class(2 or 4 or 6) and capacity(4gb or 8gb or more) of the card best suits though the canon claims that it supports the 32 gb of SDHC card.
The best suitable memory card to capture stills and movies as well?

Well, you want the fastest card you can afford. And I'd stick with major brands like Sandisk. But if you're taking mostly still images, you don't need to obsess over size. In fact, I still use 2GB cards and have yet to fill them once. Why use smaller cards? Simple. INSURANCE. Any memory card can fail or become corrupted. And when you're on vacation the last thing you want is to lose the opportunity to take pictures until you can recover that media card with a software utility. If your card goes bad, swapping another one for it at that moment is of advantage so you can keep taking pics. Then, later when you're in front of your PC, you can use a utility like "F-Recovery" ( filerecoverytools.com/produ... ) to get back your pictures and recover your card.

No need to lose the moment because you relied on one card one when several can solve that problem. At the very least, you want to get more than one of whatever size you settle on.

whats the highest class recommended? I can only find a 4class, is that fast enough for my a2000is? I think i have seen class 6. Is that over kill for my a2000 is?

I personally think a class 4 is more than enough for the A2000. Once you get into incredibly advanced (and expensive) mem cards, they are beyond the capabilities of the camera and just don't make any difference in performance.

Turn it off, turn it back on again. Cycle it on/off several times. If there's a lens error, your lens may be out of alignment. But a more common indicator of lens error is using underpowered AA batteries. Your camera really needs high energy AAs with an 'mAh' of at least 2500. Anything below that (and alkalines are) will cause lens errors.

Comparing Canon A2000 IS to the Fuji FinePix F70 EXR (Cyclistmark — 03/02/2010)

How does this camera compare to the Fuji FinePix F70EXR? I understand that they are similar in price and features. What about image quality, shutter lag time, flash and zoom features?

Given the choice, though, I'd take the A2000IS. I'd also check out the Canon SX line.Canon is making some great cameras right now.

Hi, how is the image quality of this camera? and which battery type is thebest AA3 or L-ion? I've heard the battteries are not lasting long enough in this A200 IS model.

As for which batteries to use, AAs will be fine so long as they have an mAh of at least 3000 for the longest lasting life. However, lithium ions are going to last longer for long days of shooting. But over time, they will lose capacity.

Firmware could be corrupted. A reset will reload it. You may also want to go to canon and get any available firware update, download and install. But what you are discribing sounds like when the LCD first displays the image before rendering a final view. Patience in thatregard xan help.

Light painting requires a sufficiently slow shutter speed, usually a second or more. You so need a tripod to keep the camera rock steady.

LCD Viewfinder makes the Canon A2000 worthless (Francis Di Vesta — 10/31/2009)

I bought the camera as a starter in renewing an old interest in photography. Using this camera, I have lost all unique and interesting outdoor shots because the reflection on the LCD viewfinder makes it impossible to locate and frame the subject, rendering the camera worthless. I'll put the camera in a drawer and "forget-about-it"; who needs the commercially-induced frustration?

I really find this camera great, but the power consumption is disappointing. I wish Canon had reviewed the necessity of having a rechargeable battery like in cellphones.

Other than that, this camera takes incredible pics with superb clarity.

I liked the size, AA batteries, 3" screen, menu system, photo review button, but unhappy with color on screen, on computer and in prints with some images. Flash images not so good either.My old Canon A10 did better with color. Fortunately the dealer refunded on return. I then bought a Canon A1000 IS and so far seems better.

I was suprised to see "some guy" described this camera with one star and called it useless. I've gotten SEVERAL compliments about the pictures I've taken with this camera. I think the colors are great, the zoom is exceptional and the size is perfect. I also love that is requires only 2 AA batteries. We keep replacements in our camera bag at all times so we're never caught without them!

Useless camera (SomeGuy — 06/29/2009)

The colors are vibrant if there is sufficient light, but the quality is terrible. How can this me a 10 megapixel and look so bad? All pics are grainy and washed out. Play with all the settings or set to factory, this camera cannot take a usable picture of anything. My previous a570 was way better. I am selling this junk and buying some other brand this time.
