You may have disabled the LCD display in the menu settings. Try resetting it back to factory defaults and you should be okay.

My PowerShotS230 will no longer display the image in the viewfinder when taking a picture. Any ideas of the problem? (mcloutie — 03/24/2008)
If we take the picture, then again, just grey matter appears when we view it either on the view finder or when we download it to a computer.

Your camera was one of a host of cameras that suffered from a faulty CCD chip. Check out this ( usa.canon.com/consumer/cont... ) from Canon regarding it.
Affected products:

- Digital Cameras A60, A70, A75, A300, A310, S230, SD100, SD110, A40(*), A80(*), A85(*), A95(*), S1 IS(*), S60(*), S200(*), S330(*), S400(*), S410(*), S500(*)
Malfunction:
It has been confirmed that the connecting parts of the internal wiring of the CCD used in affected products may become disconnected, especially if the affected products are stored or used in high-temperature and high-humidity environments. If this occurs, the signal is not output from the CCD normally in Shooting Mode, which may cause a distorted image or the absence of an image. This malfunction can be confirmed on the LCD monitor screen during shooting. The same malfunction also appears on the recorded image.
Canon's Response:
Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, the products listed above exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if Canon determines that the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair.
So the good news is that Canon will fix it for FREE:
U.S. residents are kindly directed to contact the Canon Customer Support Center for further assistance at 1-800-828-4040. Support hours are Monday thru Friday - 8:00 AM to 12:00 midnight; and Saturday 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM (all times EST). Alternatively, if electronic support is preferred, please send your email to carecenter@cits.canon.com

I just sent an S230 to Canon for this very issue. We had the camera for over 6 years. They sent us a refurbed S430.

Hey, that's good news. Often times those "refurbished" cameras are simply cameras that have been returned and state laws require they be refurbished because it's an open box. So, it's either practically brand new or has been brought back to brand new. Either way you get a camera that's been hardly used.

A good site to download the S/W you need will be the Canon Download Library.
Go to <a href="canon.com/gateway/region/am... location</a> and select ' Downloads '.
It will lead you to a page where you can select Downloads > Consumer to reach the Download Library.
The rest is just to key in your camera model to get all the downloads available for it.

My dad wants to buy me a camera for xmas (lucky me!) but I need to do the research and decide which one I want, and am having trouble...
MUST HAVES:
-good quality
-long battery life
-ultra-compact (needs to fit in a small purse)
NICE-TO-HAVES:
-big LCD display (2.5"+)
It needs to be in the $200 range since its a gift.
Anyone have any tips/experience to offer??

I started out using a Canon PowerShot S230 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... ) and I still use it on certain occasions. It fits great in my pocket and has a good size screen. Its a bit outdated and you might try upgrading to the Canon PowerShot SD450 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... ). Its about the same size and meets all the other specs you're looking for (priced around $200 with a 2.5" LCD screen). Good luck in your search!

This camera has a problem with the display and Canon knows it. It was repaired once before and now the camera has the same issue and is unusable. This is a badly built camera and I would not recommend it to anyone.

I feel I can safely say that the Canon S230 is a good camera. Not being a photo bug, I don't know if this is an "excellent" camera or not. However, it suits my purpose of taking family pictures which I plan to keep for the future.
