B-
We've given the SD1100 IS a grade of B-.

Editor's Review

The SD1100 was an awesome camera, but it's more than two years old. We recommend that you buy a newer model in the awesome SD series. Try the Canon Powershot SD1300, for example.

Here's what we had to say when the SD1100 was released in January 2008:

The Canon SD1100 IS continues the tradition of powerful and stylish Canon ultracompacts, and is an attractive option for consumers looking for something special. With the sensor-shift image stabilization and face-detection auto focus, the SD1100 IS is finely tuned to provide clear and well-composed photographs. Canon's SD line has a great reputation, and the SD1100 IS is sure to only add to that legacy.

Great camera for the price (Melania Krahe — 10/20/2009)

Love my Canon SD1100IS. I know absolutely nothing about cameras and I was able to pick up alot of the features just by practicing with the camera. I have taken some awesome photos using macro setting and would highly recommend this camera to anyone wants to click, point & shoot.

Good Choice in point & shoot cameras (Rick Nocella — 07/09/2009)

Great Camera. I did a few short movies of the kids in the pool and they came out great. Really no complaints about the camera. Had the sd1000 (which was also great) but the mode switch broke after 1 1/2 yrs and canon refused to fix it.

Easy, effective, and versatile (Christina — 05/12/2009)

This camera has lasted me almost a year so far. It takes great pictures. Its biggest advantage is its speed. it takes very little time to take a picture. There is very little time in between pictures. I use the auto setting most often just because it's really easy. the camera is so portable and small and it fits into my purse easily. The color accent and color swap features are fun. overall, great quality, i've taken some really amazing shots of the sunrise or flowers or of people. very versatile

2 months after purchase, still no working camera (Virgil — 04/07/2009)

I bought a sd 1100, and the video files created by the camera were corrupt. I sent the camera in to be fixed twice, sent back still not working both times. After many many frustrating hours, I was sent a replacement camera. The replacement camera is also defective. Do not buy this model. Worst camera ever. Waste of money. Two months in, still no working camera, no refund.

best camera i've ever had!!!!! (Dee Williams — 02/24/2009)

Great camera and not just for the price. I previously had two Kodak cameras (bot gave out) and one olympus (still functioning to this day) and I can honestly say that I am as happy with this camera as I was with my olympus.

Superb (Nice — 02/20/2009)

One of Great cameras...Those who were telling that this is not good, first learn the settings well...It has lot of settings, which will help to take in dim light...darkeness and in bright light..

Amazing Camera (Henry — 12/30/2008)

To the guy who said it takes horrible pictures in low light: well you have to know how to use a camera. I mean really know, not just be used to instant disposable cameras. I just took a great picture of a dark corner of a room I can barely see with my eye WITHOUT a flash. I used the manual settings to get what I wanted. No grain at all. There was grain in the LCD preview but not the final image.

I love this camera. The only problem I can see is that people will see how small the camera is and assume you can't do great things with it.

terrible pictures in low light (jmenbo — 12/21/2008)

It takes terrible pictures under low light conditions. Objects up close look bright and clear but everything else behind looks very very dark. Going into manual mode you are able to adjust the exposure and select different types of lighting (fluorescent, etc) and improve things a bit but the quality of the image is still very poor. I'll be returning my camera tomorrow!!!

More Than I Expected (Eric C. — 09/01/2008)

I have only had this camera for about a week, but I had no idea how great it was. I'm not sure where the negative reviews are coming from. This camera has beautiful photographs and seemingly endless options to alter your photo right in the camera. Special features like stitch assist are great for putting together panoramic images. The best thing of all is how easy to learn and use this camera is. After only one day, I knew this camera. The only time I cracked the instruction manual was to find out about things I didn't know it could do, which was a lot. Another greatly helpful tool is that it stores all your settings with each photo so you can see exactly what you did to make it happen.

I have only found 2 negatives so far. First, it only has 3x Optical Zoom, but I knew that when I was buying it. It is extremely difficult to find a quality camera in this price range with more optical zoom. The second is that it does not use Raw file format. The only reason I suspected that it did was because Digital Camera HQ claimed that it did. After looking at Canon's website I found that it doesn't. I will miss that as an option, but with everything else this camera offers I can surely live with that.

Suprisingly Not Good (Ellie Johnson — 08/13/2008)

I had great hopes for this camera. It has two serious flaws for which I will return the camera to the store. First, on complete Auto mode, most pictures came out too dark. I had to lighten them up with computer software before printing. Secondly, action shots were not acceptable. One shot was in bright sunlight, where you would expect to get a "stop action" result, the moving part came out completely blurry. In another instance, taking a test shot indoors with both the complete Auto and with the "Kinds and Pets" setting, taking a picture of the cat walking, the legs were blurry. Sorry Canon, but my old cheap 4 MP camera did much better.
But, if these flaws do not bother you, then the good features are: 1 ) Picture quality was very good. 2) Exposure can be adjusted to compensate for the first flaw above on all but the complete "Auto" setting. 3) The small size means you can take the camera more places more often, so you will get pictures you might not otherwise get if you had to pack a big SLR type camera. 4 ) Movie mode is excellent. Good quality and the zoom works.

Amazing and fun (Bekahjo — 05/06/2008)

I absolutely love this camera. It's really gotten me started on real professional shooting. It has just enough manual effects to get your pictures to turn out as good and unique as you want them, but not too many that you wast a lot of money on manual effects you'll never use. My sugesstion would be that if you want a camera that you'll only use for taking pics of family outings or special events, in which you'll mainly use the auto setting, to get something else, but if you want to be able to play around with it and spend some time on what you want it to look like, it will turn out much better.
