Great camera, but it's been replaced by a newer model. Here's what we had to say about it in mid-2009:
The Canon Powershot SD940 IS is a slim, ultracompact camera with a 12-megapixel sensor and an average 4x optical zoom lens. The SD940 also features a useful high-definition movie mode, which can record video clips in 720p resolution. The SD940 also has an HDMI output that enables easy connections to high-definition televisions for slideshows or video playback.

In addtion to those differences, the SD780 still has a "peep-hole" optical viewfinder which is absent on the SD940 and SD1400. Otherwise they are all very similar at first glance.

looking for a camera for myself, I takes lots of pictures (indoor and outdoor), so the picture quality has to be excellent. I don't shoot video because I have a great camcorder. I also want a camera that is lightweight, durable, 10-12X optical zoom, 2-3 inches LCD and a good shutter speed. All that under maybe less than $500. Can you suggest any model or a specific model that will have the feature I need? Thanks

It's available as the Ixus 120 through Canon India. I'd start there, contact them and see if they can point you to a more local option.

When I play a video captured by SD940, it jumps from some part of the video and there are flickers in it. the video format is MOV. does anybody know the reason and solution?

I've read that to get the best quality when shooting HD video, you need to use a Class 6 SD card. If your SD card is Class 2 (like mine are) that might be the problem. Class 6 card should eliminate any stuttering in the video playback.

i'm interested in the camera and just went to all the big camera shops in melbourne and no one has heard of it. it also doesnt appear on canon australia website.

It's the Ixus 120. Man, you'd think it would just be easier to keep the models the same and just use an "E" for a European model or "AS" for Australian.

No. The S2 is a Super Zoom, dubbed a "bridge camera" between SLRs and point and shoot cameras. But in reality, it's just a point and shoot with a larger lens.

I bought this camera last week. I have a DSLR and wanted a small point and shoot that was easy to tag along anywhere. I am not too thrilled about the colors on these pictures.. they seem to be either light struck or dark. I was hoping for something that took great picsout of the box, I am wondering if I haveone of the 40000 settings on this camera off that is effecting the results.. I am finding the most concern during indoor shooting. I really just want a good point and shoot. I take pics of my kids that is really it.. Help

All point and shoots have shutter delay, I'm afraid. If you want to avoid that, a DSLR is pretty much your only option.

It doesn't do zooming in optical mode, but it does zooming in digital zoom, may someone confirm? I'm considering buying SD940 if it does zooming in video mode, even only digital zoom.

I'm probably purchasing this camera in the next few days and would like to buy a new SD card to go with it. So any suggestions on which is the best, or atleast will work great with the SD940 IS.

if you are getting this camera as a kit it comes with a 8G memory card. if you get the camera without a card you can get lots of different brand cards inexpensively. you can find 2 to 4G around 20 dollars or less. there are a lot of expensive ones that people will say are the best. I find unless you are a professional photographer there is no need to spend the extra $ right away. find a kodak or panasonic ( I use whatever office max or best buy has on sale ) and take some photos. This camera takes a SD memory card , which is a very standard card available most anywhere.

looking to get a camera for my wife for christmas, she does dog shows & seminars, mostly indoors type of shooting, she is using my older canon A40, and sometimes my canon A590, the A 590 is OK, but I want to get her something smaller that will have the features similar to the A590 or more, I do like the idea of connecting the camera to a large screen tv with HDMI ports, I see the sd780 & sd940 offer, any suggestions on a Canon brand that will do a better job than the ones I selected so far. please offer any other choices or a specific model that will have any features she will need.

unfortunately, you need to provide a little more information. Is your wife going to be shooting video only? Or does she want to take pictures as well? What type of quality do you want the pictures to be in? Canon only has a few more compact cameras that shoot in 720P format, but have a few more that are larger, but am not sure if a larger size is ok with your wife's use? If you can answer those questions, that would help out a lot.

The main difference is that the SD940 has a wide angle, but other than that, they are pretty much the same. The SD940 is slightly larger and it's only .1 inches in all dimensions, height, width and length.
