The current in the SD900 series is the SD980, but Canon makes models going up to SD4000 now.

i had the sd750 and its time for a new one,
i fell inlove with the 3 LCD and dont want to go smaller
so after lookign around i saw the 970 and 880
they are both rather expensive but i think its worth it
help?

First thing I would do is go to the Canon site and the product page of either one. In the upper right hand corner you'll see a button for "choose the right product." Then, click on "product comparison." A popup window will let you compare up to three cameras for features. This will give you a chance to compare them side by side to see the differences, and more importantly, the similarities.
Next, check out this resource ( imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP... ). It takes pictures with each and you can compare them side by side.
The bottom line though, is that with the exception of subtle differences, they are essentially the same camera because they're from the same SD line.

Has anyone compared the sd970 and sd990 side by side??? (Tom133 — 06/10/2009)
I just bought the 970 and am wondering if I should have gone with the 990. I am mostly interested in photo quality and speed (for shooting kids).

Sure. You simply go to one product page at canonusa.com. In the upper right hand corner you'll see a button for "choose the right product." Then, click on "product comparison." They're bascially the same camera with a few minor exceptions like focal length and MP count. But more MP isn't always better. Especially in low light where less MP actually helps because it gives what MP you have more room on the chip making it more sensitive to light. But the SD990 does shoot faster shot to shot by about 30%.

SD 990 vs newer models (hawaiian711 — 05/15/2009)
Read the great 990 thread. What about the 970 and 960? The 780 and 1200? Seems like there are always new models coming out...like golf clubs. Is the 990still the point and shoot of choice? Thank you.

Regardless of what's coming down the road, the SD990 is a fantastic camera. Thing is, there will always be something new on the horizon. If you wait for the next best thing, you won't get a new camera. The thing is, most of the time, the updates are fairly minor.
If you like the SD990, I say go for it.

Does the SD970 IS have a socket for attaching it to a tripod? (aglynch — 05/09/2009)

Yes, on the bottom, and it is metal, not plastic.

Thank you very much for the information. I am handicapped, so I'll probably buy the camera from a .com without handling it in advance.

sd970 or sx200??? Can't decide!!!! (indecisiveamy — 05/08/2009)
Aside from the zoom differnce...what makes one better than the other...seems like 970 reviews are better...what about wide angle...? which shoots wider angle shots?

First thing I would do is go to the SD 970 IS Canon site ( usa.canon.com/consumer/cont... ). In the upper right hand corner you'll see a button for "choose the right product." The SD970IS has a faster lens, but the SX200 has a wider angle and larger focal length. The SX200 can also shoot faster shutter speeds up to 1/3200 vs. half that for the SD970. The SX200 is also 2 oz. heavier. Aside from that, they're quite similar in features.
Next, check out this resource ( imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP... ). It takes pictures with cameras and you can compare them side by side.
Finally, when trying to make a final call, it may just come down to what camera feels good in your hand. Go to a local camera store and check both out side by side, holding them, feeling their center of gravity, the balance. How it sits in your hand. That usually sells me one way or the other.

Can we take a picture with SD970 while recording video? (kramana — 04/30/2009)
I found that it can be done with some canon cameras. Does this particular camera (SD970) allow us to shoot pictures while recording video?
reply to this comment
by James DeRuvo (05/02/2009)
No. Dual recording capability can only be used on a camcorder where the camera records video to hardware or tape while the still images can be recorded to SD card.

I used to own a casio xslim 7MP digital camera and that had this capability. There was a gap in the video when the picture was being taken -- which I didn't mind. The latest casio with 12 MP doesn't have it.. (and I am also looking for a little higher end camera).

does the video mode have zoom in or out while recording (smhotte — 04/03/2009)

I don't see anything in the specs that indicate that you are able to, so at this point I'm more inclined to say no. Try upgrading to the Canon SX10, its got slightly better quality, and can zoom during video capture.

i just bought this camera. you can zoom during video recording but only digital zoom. if you want to use the optical zoom you have to do that before you start the recording. also the quality of the video is amazing for a point and shoot. watched the playback on my 42" 1080p tv and it looks great.
