Casio Exilim EX-V7

We've given the EX-V7 a grade of D.

Editor's Review

Our readers have informed us that the EX-V7 can suffer from a serious defect that may render it inoperable. Buyer beware.

The Casio EX-V7 is a very small camera, measuring only one inch thick, yet not lacking in the power department. The 7x optical zoom is comparable to far bulkier cameras like the Canon Powershot A710 IS. The EX-V7 also features clever processing that will reduce noise, stabilize the image, and track fast-moving objects to reduce the occurance blurry or otherwise unsatisfactory images. The "eBay mode" is a cute bit of branding, and will automatically optimize your photos for uploading to the web, reducing their file size and resolution, as well as storing them in a special separate "eBay" folder for easy access. Casio's tiny cameras are tantalizing, wafer-thin, and full of surprises.

I purchased the Cassio EX-V7 in 2007 rarely used it, and now that I am using it I get an ERROR Camera Stabilizer is not available... Maybe if people make a complaint about this issue it will be recalled... I have the same issue with this worthless camera. Make a complaint to consumer affairs... (RECALL THIS CAMERA)

Camera stabilizer is not available (Wiebe Nauta — 12/22/2009)

The camera has been functioning ok, but a short time after the warranty ran out the error message "Camera stabilizer is not available" prevented me from taking more pictures...

Error message (Wayne — 12/12/2009)

My camera also has the error message. If casio is not willing to fix the problem, than I will find a new brand to buy. I wish those luck that have a Casio and have not experienced this problem yet.

great camera (MATT — 06/12/2009)

i got this at ritz camera when some of the stores were going out of business. the original price was $279 and i got it for$ 111., for the money, i feel it was well worth it.this takes pictures very well. along with the fact that it has a 7 x optical zoom in a small package,i also love the sliding lens cover( it beats the automatic ones( they break all the time). the battery it comes with appears to last quite a long time, it takes great videos as well. very nice controls, uses a SDHC cards. it really is a top notch camera.

I have had my EX-V7 for 2yrs and in 2 months the warning sign image stabilizer came up so it went to the closet like most things. Well today I took it out and in anger threw it to the ground and the sliding open close lens came off and now works like new!! Ha it may work for those who like me kept it, and have nothing better 2 do with it. Try it u never know

"Image Stabilizer Is Not Available" Casio EX-V7 (Sam — 09/06/2008)

I really like my Casio EX-V7 but now it is showing that the image stabilizer is'nt available. I have owned it for about 11 months and am not sure if the Casio warranty is still good. I did not get a store warranty.

I don't want to pay $40-$140 to fix my $170 camera. But I don't really want to have to but a new one. Any help would be appreciated.

Stabilizer and indoor problems (Uel — 08/24/2008)

I bought this camera for my wife. Should be easy to use. I had problems with flash and lights in indoors. Not very "automatic". I owned 4 cameras (including 35mm manual). This is the worst. Dropped it two feet and now it won't work due to the Stabilizer error. I will have to get a new one for my wife. Bad choice on my part.

Stabllizer Problem (Gloria Walker — 08/06/2008)

I have owned the camera for a little over a year. When purchased it was to new for reviews. The camera takes good pictures, easy to use, however the camera is not usable at this time because of a stablizer problem. My understanding is this is a common occurence with this camera and should be recalled. I will not purchase another Casio camera.

camera stabilizer (dave — 07/06/2008)

For three months I was then I too got the camera stabilizer message. I bought it through Amazon and now I know why it was at a discount price. They have said I can get it repaired under guarantee but reading the various messages, it is clear this is a regular fault. This is damaging to Casio's reputation. You'd think they would recall the cameras to try and restore confidence in their name

The EX-V7 needs to be recalled. (Tim Cason — 06/12/2008)

I am a camera repair specialist and I've worked on literally thousands of cameras, mostly CASIO. I believe the EX-V7 has a defect causing the very common stabilizer problem.

Casio should recall this model in my opinion.

Hoping it will be better than the Exilim p 505 (Ford Jacka — 01/07/2008)

I've owned the casio P505 for over a year and it has been a fantastic camera, great pictures, and great video all in a small form factor. I bought the V7 in hopes it will do everything the P505 did but with pocketability, greater optical zoom and larger sd card capacity. Unfortunately, I turned on image stabilization and bumped the camera too hard, causing the stabilizer error other people have cited. Casio replaced the lens assembly free of charge and I'm now ready to continue comparing this model to my P505.

angry (bikelover — 12/28/2007)

I bought this camera in today's boxing day sale and the first thing I see when I turn on it was "Camera stabilizer is not available". I could not take any picture at all. I called the service center and they told me it is up to repair and I have to contact to another number, and no one answer the phone at that number.

casio should recall v7 for free sevice (richardskylea — 12/11/2007)

since the stabilizer problem of v7 is so often, obviously this is design fault, casio should announce this to his valueble users.

I bought this camera two weeks ago! (mmccabe — 10/13/2007)

I purchased this camera for a trip I was going on. I have owned it for 2 weeks. I took about 100 pictures on it and then out of nowhere received the "Camera Stabilizer Not Available" message every time I turn it on. I have been reading other people's reviews and it seems to be a common problem with this camera. I am angry that the retailer sold me the camera and the clerk reassured me it was a great buy and worth the money.

I am planning on returning the camera today. I am hoping that since it has been within the 14 day return policy I can get a store credit.

I would not recommend this camera to anyone. I am advising anyone reading this to not purchase the camera.

Mediocre performance, especially for a camera that stopped working (m — 10/06/2007)

If the camera hadn't died the second time I took it out, I might have been more inclined to put up with the so-so image quality. However, like EVERY OTHER PERSON ON THE ENTIRE INTERNET, I have the "Camera Stabilizer Not Available" message every time I turn the darn thing on. The website is supremely unhelpful, since it tells you to turn the camera off, and then on again, and if you get the same message take it to a shop. This is absurd.

I really liked the size and weight of the camera when I got it, and the first time I took it out it shot OK pictures. Macro function is a little lacking, IMO, but not too bad. It doesn't stack up to my Fuji FinePix, even though that's a 6-year-old camera.

Bottom line: If you want this camera, buy it from a physical store where you can take it back in two weeks and complain to an actuial human that the camera stabilizer not available message is on again.

Cameras are supposed to work (FrustratedFotog — 09/09/2007)

I bought this camera a week before going on a trip, specifically for the purpose of taking pictures on the trip. Out of nowhere—I've never dropped the camera or anything—it starts saying "Camera stabilizer is not available," and doesn't allow me take pictures.

I've scoured the Internet for details on how to fix this problem, and everyone says to "send it back to the retailer." Even the Casio website says the same thing on their FAQs, meaning this is a frequently occurring problem.

Sure, I can send it back to the retailer, especially since I bought this camera a little over a week ago and it's still under two warranties. But that doesn't change the fact that I'm left camera-less on vacation, and I have to wait until I go home and have receipts and warranty info on hand to resolve anything.

Bottom line—until you start seeing a clear solution to this problem (other than "send it back") don't get this lemon.

First Impressions (Scott — 04/11/2007)

Old camera was a Dimage XT, so this is a big step in an internal focus package that occupies about the same area. The camera is a little heavy (would love to look inside!), and the wrist strap is a bit short for my long fingers. So far the camera delivers, but my trip to Disney next week will put a real world photo wonderland into test.
