Fuji FinePix F20

Editor's Review

The Fuji FinePix F20 is an appealing ultracompact that wants you to know it has some 'brains.' The 6 megapixel 'Super CCD' and 'RP Processor II' that Fuji insists on boasting about both sound pretty great, but flashy terms like that make us skeptical. This dynamic duo is meant to capture light with more efficiency and reduce the amount of noise found on the final images. The F20 is capable of reaching ISO 2000, which is good for low-light and motion scenes, so maybe there's something to all that fancy technology.

Fuji F20 - Great Buy for the $$ (bigjim — 12/23/2008)

I've been a big Fuji fan for some years now. Best picture quality for the $$ in my opinion. The only negative I would pass on is one that I've found to be true for almost all digital cameras in this class .... they are fragile and don't take normal bumps and handling well. Of course ...if you outright DROP any camera then all bets are off but ... I'd like to see them built a bit sturdier and if that meant they cost $15 more then so be it ... would be money well spent.

Excellent (Dale Clarke — 10/02/2008)

I bought this little camera to supplement my Nikon D40. I wanted a camera that could take pictures in very low light—wow can it. I have taken images by candle light at Civil War reenactments. see http://gozonian.org --> Civil War. I have carried it in my pocket for 2 years and dropped it, left it in a scorching car, been rained on with it—if abuse exists I have done it. It has NOT yet failed me... I take 400 to 600 images at ~400kb size on one charging. The only issue I find is the avi video button; it gets turned on when putting and pulling from a pocket. All in all it is a 5 for 5. I am going to try the f100fd next.

Horrible Power Cord!! (Kari — 08/14/2007)

Has anyone else had problems with their power cord? Mine stopped pulling power just a few months after I got the camera as a gift last Dec. I love the camera and the pic's it takes but have spent a fortune on rechargeable batteries b/c I want to use it on trips and the cord won't charge. I've mailed it in to the company 2 months ago with no response on when it will be returned!!! I'm now shopping for a new cord!!! Ugh! What a pain! I just wanted a chargeable camera and nice digi pics!

Best camera of 5 I own (Dale Clarke — 07/28/2007)

I bought the F20 to take non-flash fotos at Disney's Christmas Pageant. It worked fine and produced great images point and click (P&C) in almost dark conditions. My Nikon D50 P&C by my son got blurred color collages at identical time and conditions. I now use it exclusively as a daily personal image producer. Pros: Takes 100-150 images on a charge (no flash needed), well protected and pocket carriable even in with the coins, stop action great, 6 mega pixels is sufficient for almost any image. Cons: It is easily switched to AVI when pulled from a pocket sometimes causing miss of your first image (no click quickly alerts you though), night look images not easy to take since it sees better than your (my) eyes in the darkness. to see photo album taken at dawn look at: http://gozonian.org/2007data/2007gettysburg/image_10.html Image 10 of 216 was severe darkness—I pointed at their voices in the firelight.

Does any know where I could find.. (Shelbi — 06/07/2007)

Another USB cord for this camera?
It seems so small compared to all of the USB cords I have around the house.
I lost mine, and thus I cannot upload photos until I come across another.

Love so far (C. Pegs — 05/25/2007)

Haven't had much time to get too involved with all of the features yet, but did take several shots under many different settings, love the display of split images where it takes one photo with natural light and one with flash with only one click!then shows them side by side so you can chose. Very easy to use software also, one easy to read/follow user manual.Feels good in the hands although I'm a bit shaky.
You will want to buy a 513MB or larger xd card though, at the highest resolution, I was only able to store 4 photos on the internal memory.
If you buy, hope that you also enjoy.

I was surprised... (Danielle — 04/16/2007)

I bought this camera...planned on "loaning" it from Costco for a trip, since my other Canon camera broke. I LOVE this camera...absolutely refuse to return it. It's about half the price of the Canon, yet takes MUCH better photos.

I was especially impressed with the night photos. They look EXCELLENT and all I did was turn off the flash. I did the same thing with my old Canon and pretty much got nothing but a distant flash of light :-).

I would absolutely recommend this little camera!!

Love it! (Christy — 03/15/2007)

I actually have the F-10 version of this camera but it appears to be quite similar. It's hands down, the BEST digital camera I have ever owned!!! I took it on a 6 month round the world trip with me and it worked perfectly every time. The pictures it takes are very vivid and clear. If you can get it on the right settings, it takes beautiful night pics, too.
It's long lasting re-chargable battery makes it perfect for traveling. I usually only had to re-charge it every 6 days and that was with daily, regular use. It's 2 years old now and still works perfectly.
I've had several compliments on my pictures and the camera. I was weary about Fuji at first but this camera has totally converted me.

I am sold! (Jackie — 03/02/2007)

I absolutely love this camera! This is the first digital camera I have owned and I couldn't ask for anything more. I found the price to be extremely reasonable and the quality to be superb. The first day I purchased it I had a chance to use it in on a night out with friends. The pictures turned out great, I had one blurred picture, but I blame the person who took it. The next day, I experimented with both the color and black and white setting, indoor and outdoor. I come to find that I love the black and white option. My friends love the camera, my boyfriend was really pleased with it (He used to own a Canon which broke within a few months) and it's definitely small enough to fit in a small purse. Definitely a crowd-pleaser.

Excellent (Bob — 02/06/2007)

I don't believe that out there one can buy a better camera at the price. It's small and light yet sturdy, with superb sensitivity and a beautiful 2.5" LCD.
And how about a 3-year warranty? Wow!
This is my third Fuji and I'm completely satisfied.

Excellent! Best compact camera I've ever had! (Johnna Wentzel — 01/27/2007)

I would even say that this camera has a better picture quality than the Olympus E-10 that I had a while back (at a fraction of the cost). It is also much EASIER to use!

Great at low light and thats what I want! (Christopher Brown — 12/23/2006)

I purchased this camera to replace a Canon Ixus i which was terrible at capturing low light images. This one has plenty of capability in low light and (I tried 'party' mode on the first night)it also displays which settings it chose to get a great result. Couldn't wish for better and at £129 from digital depot it came with a free 512MB xd card. Chris Brown (Herts UK)

awesome camera for its price (som — 12/20/2006)

I got this camera for abt $185 along with camera bag and xd 512 memory.I must say this is the best ultra compact camera i have come across in teh price range of 150-250$ I have looked closely at Nikoncool pix L6 and cannon A540 and this one was a clear winner compared to the other two eventhough the latter boasts of more manual controls.
The best feature of teh F20 is its low light capabilities n images r just gr8/unmatched in low light conditions.I particularly liked the dual shot feature of with n w/o flash. The camera is also very fast in operation and is quiet compact but still big enough to give a good grip. This is the first time i ve loved a camera so much so as to write a review for it and must say teh earlier reviews helped me a lot in motivating me to purchase this one.Strongly recommend this one for the frugal user who is lookin for performance, style and compact camera size!

Better than expected. (Ben — 12/19/2006)

I have been wanting a small camera for candid shots. My Canon Digital Rebel XT is great for most uses but too big and noisy for candid shots. When I got the F20 I was delited with overall quality, quiet operation, little shutter lag and especially sensitivity. I set the F20 next to the Canon and compared the results. It was a shock to see how little difference there was between the F20 and a very popular camera costing 4X as much. OK, it could be lighter and thiner; the manual too several readings; but I can't think of any real complaints. The F20 delivers the goods...the good pix, that is.
