Fuji FinePix F700

Editor's Review

The Fuji FinePix F700 is billed as a 6-megapixel camera, but is it really? Even though the camera can create 6-megapixel images with its new SuperCCD SR sensor, the sensor's dual pixel design (3.1 million pixels for dark areas and 3.1 million for bright areas) have prompted many reviewers to point out that in reality the F700 is just a 3.1-megapixel camera. This controversy aside, the camera produces top-notch video and offers impressive speed.

F700 (mf — 12/11/2008)

Same problem. Camera started having purple screen issues but it did have a 5 year warranty and for $10 shipping I had it fixed and it works fine . A great little camera but it was pricey!!!

F700 w/underwater housing (R Angeloni — 06/17/2008)

I purchased this camara in 2003 and have been using it in an underwater housing since 2005. The camara takes great pictures, has a limited flash, therefore I use the macro for most of my low light underwater shots in close up...The camara had the fatal purple screen...fuji fixed it for works good as new...thousands of pictures later it still takes great photos...the technology is getting long of tooth but if your looking for an inexpensive combo for underwater take a look at this can spend a lot of money real fast but you'll be hard pressed to get better pictures...

Recent Problems with purple distorted screen (Stewart Page — 06/12/2008)

A fantastic little camera packed full of features. I was really disappointed when it developed a fault last night where the screen showed distorted purple black images when taking a picture. Viewing was fine, and the menu was fine as well. I have tried all day to recover it and was at the point of throwing it away when I decided to change the ISO setting to the highest of 1600. I also turned the flash off and picked the night time setting. When I turned the camera back on it worked!!! I have now set all the setting back to the normal auto, and all is well.
I suggest all those with a failed camera try this before giving up.

Excellent camera, but sensor went after 4 years (James Smith — 05/18/2008)

First and best digital camera I have owned, took amazing pictures and I loved it! But like the rest of the comments, it suddenly stopped working one afternoon, even though I had been taking photos that morning! screen showed black and could just about pick up the light but not very well. My camera seems to be one of the lucky ones if it lasted this long!

Lasted 4 years 7000pics (ayaz khan — 02/17/2008)

Took excellent pictures. Maybe a little expensive, but was a gift. Lasted for 4 years and then after I did not replace the battery for a while, and it sat in a bag, it seemed to die. Now it looks like a tv with very little reception. I calculated about 6 cents per photo. I guess, that is not too bad, but I thought it would last longer.

CCD problems (AJB — 12/25/2007)

My camera is two years old now (out of garanty) and have the same CCD problems. The wrong CCD is a factory fault.
My camera is repared without any cost.
Contact Fuji and tell your problem.

If it breaks call New Jersey (steve bakatsas — 11/15/2007)

I made a complaint about the F-700 sometime back because I could not take photos, but could review photos. I shipped the camera to their repair center and at first, they lost it. Later, after making several calls, I finally got the unit back in the mail and it is now working fine. Don't tell them how long you really had it, unless it's been through hell and back. A camera like this should last way over a year!!!!

Major disappointment! (Joe Stolz — 07/12/2007)

I had the unfortunate accident of my child knocking the thing to the ground. It gave me a really screwy screen. Sent it to fuji for repair. Approved the estimate. Then they sent it back due to non approval. I sent it back thoroughly disgusted. They got it and called for approval again. I gave it to them. They called a week later and said if they didn't hear from me they were going to send it back. I escalated it to a supervisor. About a month later it comes back "repaired." I was excited to finally have it back. Popped the batteries in it and discovered it had never been fixed. So I sent it back with a letter of complaint. Six weeks later it returns to me and finally is working. Fast forward one year later and my wife is using it at the zoo. After taking several shots of the kids she decides to turn it off for a while. It won't return the lens and completely shut off. I figure it was the battery. After a day of recharging I turn it on. I get the focus error and then zoom error and the lens still will not move. I simply removed the disk and threw the camera in the trash. I used to manage a camera store and pushed Fuji to lots of my customers. Never again. Their cameras have gone downhill and their service is worse. When a problem like this occurs several times then they need to step up and fix it and without added cost to us the consumer!

Expect a random Focus Error message and camera dies! (Todd Theringer — 07/07/2007)

I read online that many owners of this camera have had this same experience. The camera just stopped working and the error message is "focus error." I took some pictures and I realized that the pictures were blurry. I turned the camera on and off and then it took the pictures perfectly then it just stopped working. I think there is a manufacturing mistake with the camera.

Fast startup and many features (Michael — 04/19/2007)

The biggest regret I have is the cost of the camera when I bought it, but apparently prices have dropped to a reasonable level. The feature I like best is the quick start up—probably the fastest when I bought it, but perhaps others have caught up. It has a full compliment of features to support point and shoot up to serious hobbyist (manual mode, raw file, etc) although rarely do I take the time to explore those capabilities. The zoom lens is adequate for most shooting but I find myself wanting a bit more range of focal lengths for more serious art shots. Overall I'm very pleased with the features, speed, size, weight, quality, and have used this camera to take many good shots while traveling to Egypt, Iceland, Italy, as well as four-wheeling, and domestic travel. Image quality is satisfactory; I have printed some 8x11 and 5x7 with good results. I usually shoot in 3MP mode. I have done some short movie sequences and it is nice that there's no limit on movie file size and that you can shoot in 2 resolutions. I'd recommend taking a look at it as you're shopping around in this price range.

Perfect until dropped (Katharine — 04/08/2007)

I absolutely love(d) this camera until I dropped it on my sidewalk. Then when viewing the pictures there were lines squiggling all through them. Later on it wouldn't take clear pictures. I know it is cheaper to buy a new one and it is a shame. However, the pictures were fantastic and the camera is easy to use. Love when I can walk, point and shoot in total darkness and still get a perfect picture! I hope I find another one as good as this was.

black screen (steve bakatsas — 03/22/2007)

same ole same ole the camera will show pictures taken but will not take any. Just a black screen. A piece of oriental junk. Designed to work for so long and break. Stay away from fuji and buy Olympus or Cannon

Do I have the same camera as everyone else? (Michael Unger — 03/02/2007)

I love my Fuji F700. I have compared it to Canons and Sonys in the same and slightly higher price range and the Fuji wins on clarity and color 100% of the time. It is also a much faster shutter than all other cameras I've tried.

It was stolen at a street fair and I replaced it with the same model. My wife just dropped it and cracked the LCD and I'm going to buy a refurbished of the same model for the price of the repair and have a backup.

I have probably taken about 8,000 pictures with the camera and many people ask me how I got such good quality.

Again, it's not a pro camera but for vacations and shots of the kids - even videos - it's better than I ever expected. And inexpensive now for a refurbished model.

Not worth the cost of repair (Art Sweeney — 01/30/2007)

Like the other reviewers said, this is a great camera, when it is working. The CCD in mine went out for no reason and now it is unusable. Well out of warranty, I can purchase a better one for less than the cost of repair.

CCD Problem - shows purple, green, screen and pictures (Raj Kumar Jiandani — 01/12/2007)

I had an opinion that FujiFilm is a company of repute. Now I have a firm opinion that FujiFlim products are a piece of crap.

I don't even find an service center in India. Recommend not to purchase any product from Fuji.

Was fuji finepix f700 recalled about a year ago? (Jeanine Willner — 11/29/2006)

We bought the fuji digital about 2 years ago and everything was working fine. Then just this Thanksgiving, I went to take some pictures of my family, and when I started looking at the pictures, they were all nearly white. I have no idea what happened.

We took the camera to a place called Inkley's in Salt Lake and we were told that that brand of camera was recalled because there was something wrong with the sensor. We never knew anything about this until today (11/27/06.

We bought the camera at Sam's, but they probably won't let us exchange or get the money back, because it has been over 2 years.

Fuji F700 developed a problem (Bigboot — 11/15/2006)

After 1 1/2 years and 1500 great pictures, my Fuji f700 developed a "tic". After turning off the camera, the zoom would retract, but immediately came back out. After two seconds, it would then retract and close. Six more months of this and it finally gave up. The zoom is stuck in the ready position, never to work again. A local camera shop was unable to correct the problem, so 2000 pictures is the end of its life.
Shopping for a new camera. Bigboot

Great underwater (Richard M. Baldo — 10/30/2006)

I'm not a professional but get great tourist pics under water and above. No problems so far. Even dropped it a few times. Easier and cheaper to replace than the Sea & Sea Motor Marive II I flooded 3 years ago.

Be Prepared for busted LCD Screens (Paul Newby — 10/27/2006)

I had two of these cameras. The first went bust just outside of the Manf Warranty period and I was left with a perfectly functioning camera that had no LCD screen (can't change any settings). I figured it was just something I did so I bought another one (so I could have a full set of spare parts, batteries, cables, etc sans an lcd screen) and low and behold when it exited the warranty period the screen turned into a multitude of tie dyed colours. Other than these fatal flaws I liked the camera allot.

I have been using Finepix700 since last two years. Within 30 days of usage the "SuperCCD" had a problem and It was replaced promptly by the company. Since then I have been using it and it didnt have any further problems. The camera give me clear prctures and excellent videos..

F700 PIECE OF JUNK (Bill Anton — 09/28/2006)

After a bunch of research bought this camera shortly after its introduction by Fuji Film. At a price of nearly $800 CDN I thought I was buying a quality product that would last for years to come; boy was I mistaken. In less than one year it had to go out for a warranty repair. All was well until a few months ago when to took a picture and discovered that the F700 now had an even more severe problem in that the pictures I take are all streaky or completely white.

I sent an email to Fuji Film head office describing my camera fault and dissatisfaction with the F700. They didn't even have the decency to reply; shame on you Fuji Film!

Pure Junk (Gorb — 09/19/2006)

I can't believe people are actually giving Fuji lip service here, they produce a rotten product & we have to pay? That is, until alot of us started complaining. They lost major customers on this fiasco, serves them right, charging people at the start. I had this Camera for 3 months then it went black & blue, & distorted. Don't waste your time or money on Fuji !

Yup had CCD problems but all is fine now! (Rick Brandsness — 09/15/2006)

Yup, had the bad ccd. Only lasted 13 months before it hit. Sent in for the free fix. They fixed it alright, but, the focus was not right. Email to Edison repair and they said send it back! Got it back and 100% - only cost was shipping to them. Still takes perfect pics. I love this little camera. In fact, I love it so much I have 2 of them! Plus I was impressed with Fuji Corp so much I bought the S9000! Now there's a camera!!!

Fuji will repair it after 3 years - CCD issue. (Odin_Sweden — 08/28/2006)

I was given this camera after an older Fuji was stolen and the insurance company could not find the same. I've taken it skydiving, snowboarding - you name it and it's always taken great pictures and survived. You can imagine how fast my attitude changed when I got the usual CCD problem and all pictures turned pink and then eventually black. Looking at the reviews here, I saw that some people had talked with fuji who had repaired ther cameras outside of guarantee. I called Fuji in Stockholm and they said that this is a factory recall and they will repair the camera, no matter how old it is. I'm sending mine in and I recommend that everybody who has this problem contact their local Fuji office and quote the factory recall. Good luck!

Sent my F700 in for new CCD last year and got it back in Jan. It was replaced under warranty. Didn't use it until July4, 2006 and guess what it is still NG. Got it from QVC. This is the 2nd electronic purchase from them that has failed.

Great Camera great customer service (Krista Tabor — 08/16/2006)

We bought this camera while on vacation almost 3 years ago. I notced a white blur on the camera and couldn't find anything in the manual to help trouble shoot. When I called Fuji, they asked for the serial number and told me that there was a problem with the CCD and had me send it in for repair. They told me it was out of warranty but because it was a known problem and there was a recall they fixed it for free and I had it back in under a week. It now takes wonderful pictures again. I highly reccomend the camera!

Thank you Fuji (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Like many other reviews here, my camera worked well (very well - great pics) for over a year, then the pink/purple/green horizontal lines appeared. I was quoted 150 to get it repaired by a local camera shop. However, on reading some reviews on this site about the known fault with the CCR, I contacted Fuji UK and they were great! I told them that I was going to the Red Sea in two weeks time and needed it for diving pics. Not only did they repair the camera free of charge, but they had it returned to me within 5 days! Also, very easy to contact and deal with. Super camera, great pics and excellent service.

Same problems purple, green, screen and pictures (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Camera worked fine for 2 years and on my granddaughters 4th birthday party at Disneyland every picture has the purple and green blured pictures. Not one picture was exposed correct. You would think that Fuji could make a camera last longer than 2 years. Maybe we should file a class action suit against them as this seems to be a reconized problem and Fuji just wants to put their heads in the sand and do nothing about the problem except charge customers for the repairs. This is the last Fuji product I will ever buy!!!!

Horrid (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

It worked fine for about 2 years and while I was on my vacation last month all of a sudden it showed with purple and green streaks. Now it will not turn on at all, the little circular red light won't come on when I charge it and it's totally dead! It cost about $500.00! What a rip-off I am very disappointed and this camera breaks easily, even the people at the camera shop said. I ordered a new battery in hopes that's the problem but stay far far away from this camera!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Freaking out - pink/white pics on all outdoor! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Camera has been great until now. I just went on line to troubleshoot and discovered this thread to my horror. I have been disappointed in action shots (I guess that is just all digital) and sometimes things out of focus (probably user error). But this pink/white overexposure thing just came out of nowhere.
I will try and send in for replacement; but will have to buy another one. We are travelling to Eastern Europe to Adopt our first child and we need a camera!! A reliable one at that! I read someone recommended an Olympus - will check it out. Wish everyone lots of luck with their repairs.

CCD broke down, they want $180 and 90 days to replace it. (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Just like everybody else's my f700 ccd broke down after 18 months, now fuji wants $180 and 90 days to replace it. This is just ridiculous, they should replace it for free since this is affecting everybody. Anyway im trashing this camera and getting something reliable, i think im gonna go with olympus to keep my 1gb xd cards.

JUNK!- white blur (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This camera was great for a short time...I have experienced a similar problem as those above. Took great pics for a year, then a soon as the warranty expired so did the cameras ability to take pics outdoors...overexposed every shot...very disappointing. I will write to Fuji, but I imagine nothing will come of it.
To all those out not purchase this camera...if you have one & it still works sell it now!

Great Camera for the first digital experience (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I'm an amateur pic taker and I've had my F700 for about 2 years. I have to say I've been exceptionally impressed with the performance, it takes great pics. Recently unfortunately dropped the camera (soft landing) but there are now a couple of irregular spots on the viewer screen and a small 'fog' which appears on the rh lower viewfinder screen on lowest zoom. As soon as you tweak the zoom slightly closer it disappears. This I consider 'my fault' yet the camera continues to perform well and neither of these observations transfer onto the photos I take. Looking at the commenters views I may be on borrowed time but if I get 3 years for the price I paid I'll be happy. I have heard horror stories about many Digitals, and my view is don't buy an everyday digital camera expecting to get it economically repaired!!.

The first year i like using the f700, but the only thing it used batters up really fast.I Went vacation to the Philippines and started to used the camera and the whole thing went black. I returned to the U.S. I was so mad that I lost my whole vacation due to a bad ccd sensor.

great at first...... (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I really liked this camera. Before Christmas 2005 I would have given it an A- or B+. Christmas Eve the CCD sensor failed. I found the service advisory on the Fuji website and sent the camera in for repair. Fuji promised a three week turn-around. Actual time was nearly eight weeks. I wasn't happy, but the camera seemed as good as new and the repair was free. One week later the lens began to stick and we began to get focus errors. The worst part of this nightmare is that my husband was so impressed by the free repair that he just bought a Fuji F10. I tried using the F10 tonight and the picture quality on it is absolutely awful. So now we have two lemons, but they will be the last Fujis we ever buy.

poor reliability (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

We bought one, loved it and bought a second within a few months. Both died before the two year mark, exhibiting the symptoms described in the service advisory for the F700, even though neither one of them is in the serial number groupings that Fuji is repairing for free.
Don't buy it!

Fuji should be sued (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I had this camera for a little over two years and it went out on me just like everyone else. I started getting the colorfull rainbow mushroom view. I should try to sell this busted thing on ebay with a free black light. I bought a Canon so that I could use the same xD card. Fuji should have a recall and send out new camera's to everyone who bought this piece of junk. They should just stick to film. Never will I buy a Fuji camera again!

FUJI does not honor warranty!!! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

One year warranty? After 8 months, focus error, lens will not extend/retract properly. Mailed to the Fuji warranty service center. Could not be repaired due to a grain of sand in focus mechanism. Would not cover it under warranty. It had not been exposed to sand. It certainly must be poorly made for it not to be adequately protected from a grain to enter a critical area. I will never buy anything Fuji again.

Great Pictures, Bad Service (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Only took 200 pictures, all great quality. Then at my Grand Kids School Christmas party the Lens stuck in the open position. The authorized service center in Atlanta estimated $125 to repair, full payment in advance, and 3 wks to complete. After reading the other reviews I'm buying another camera.

Horizontal purple stripes (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I was amazed to see how many people had the same problem as me, with the horizontal pink and purple stripes on the screen and on pictures. I assumed I would have to pay for the repair, but when I called the helpline, they told me this was a known problem and would be fixed for free - I just have to send it to them. I am disappointed with the camera overall, but I'm relieved they will fix it for nothing. (UK)

Fantastic Quality Pictures, Poor Quality Camera (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

My story seems the same as everyone elses. This camera takes the best pictures (quality, pixels) etc., I have ever seen, but now the lens has jammed up and we have the black screen and can barely take pictures. I was thinking of returning it, but now I see it's probably not worth it. I am so disappointed, because I loved this camera!

CCD Failure at the worst time (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Just like everyone else, I had my camera for about 2 years, today I went on the London eye. Right when I got to the very top, I noticed that my Fuji 700 camera that I bought for $400 start acting weird. The LCD screen had green, pink and blue streaks all over and the picture was distorted. It almost seem like the camera was not able to interprete the image into digital format or something. I was hoping for $400, I be able to get something a little longer than 2 years. I am never shopping with Fuji ever again.

Awesome disposable camera (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I'm glad to have found this site before sending my F700 in for repairs. The camera worked great for nearly 2 years then it suddenly started showing the same problems described by everyone else. First came the purplish and green streaks, then it only took pictures in shades of pink before dying completely. After reading the other posts, instead of trying to get the fuji repaired I'll invest in an Olympus so that I can at least continue to use my 512K memory cards. What a terrible disappointment...

Great while it lasts.... (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I bought my Fuji FinePix F700 in March 2004 after extensive research. I'm an Ebay seller and needed a good camera after my old one died. It WAS great until last week. Now I'm getting the white screen and white fuzzy borders and it seems to tell me my battery is low very quickly. I'm just devastated. I paid over $300 for this camera, and I thought I had a camera that would last, but apparently it has a very short life. I checked the Fuji website and there is a Service Advisory for this camera and they say they'll fix it if it falls into the list of serial numbers/category of problems they describe, but after reading all the reviews and horror stories about trying to fix it, I'm not going to bother. I can't be without a camera or I have no business, so I'm now researching other cameras. No more Fuji for me! Such a shame.

As in previous messages here my F700 failed with black screen of death. The camera works fine apart from you can't take any pictures because the CCD (the camera's eye) failed out of the blue. The repair cost is more than a new camera so I'm going to have a go at repairing it myself. I'm an electronics engineer and I'll document the process as I do it and post back here.

Waste of Money (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

At first I loved my new camera, but one day it started letting in too much light, so I took it to the authorized retailer and though it was only a few months after purchase, they claimed there was a small ding on the cover so the warranty was voided (which I'm certain there was not, but it was shipped out for repairs so there was no way of proving it) They charged me over $100 in repairs including charging me for the dock that I brought in which never worked. They wouldn't understand that I hadn't bothered to bring just the dock in for repair previously since the closest place on their site was almost an hour for me and I don't have enough need for a dock to warrant the trip. Regardless, they insited on charging me for a new one now aswell as for the repairs I originially brought it in for even though I told them that if they were going to charge for it I didn't want it.

I took it home and it was always a bit too sensitive to light...a few months ago the camera also started givign me a hard time with charging and now won't charge at all! I'm going to buy a new battery, but I'd rather just chuck it than pay for repairs again.

I won't be buying another fuji.

I consider myself an advanced amateur. Camera worked fine and very satisfied with performance until sudden failure. Pictures are over exposed with a reddish tint and the camera will not charge the batteries. Red light indicating a charge in progress does not illuminate. The camera was not abused or ever dropped. It seems that the camera will not last much longer then 2 years which seems to be in line with other contributors here. I will not go through the trouble of repair by Fuji after hearing the grief of others. I have always been a customer of Fuji ever since I had a ride on their blimp. Now I will look around for a camera which will allow me to use the XD cards. Sorry Fuji YOU'RE FIRED!

Great if you like totally white or vignetted pictures (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

2 years and 7000 pictures later (yes we have just had our first child) our F700 has decided to only give us white images or if we are very lucky a picture with a white faded boarder. The sequence of events ran.

1. Picture quality admittedly was not as good as what I was hoping for. The camera does not like low light situations and it seems to think there are a lot of them.

2. Occasional zoom being stuck when extended. Like many others I put this down to possible battery issues. An OFF and ON seemed to fix it for that time at least.

3. Screen then started to become streaky like it was trying to tune into Mars TV. From here its been all downhill fast. A few days later...

4. Video option now records with a thick bar across the top of screen. Taking a successful photograph is like winning the lottery. I now get totally white photographs, or if I am very lucky a picture with a with faded edge all around (this I'd prefer to do in Photoshop).

I am out of warranty hence Fuji just ignore me unless I am willing to pay. I wish they had on their brochures that the F700 had a 1 year use by date.

Great Camera (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This is a great camera for the price. I've had mine for almost 2 years and even after taking a licking it keeps on clicking. The battery life on it is getting weird as it will say "battery low" but I will be able to continue taking picture for hours on on end. The picture quality and sound are excellent.

Fantastic Quality Pictures, Poor Quality Camera (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

My story seems the same as everyone else’s. This camera takes the best pictures (quality, pixels) etc., I have ever seen, but now the lens has jammed up and we have the black screen and can barely take pictures. I was thinking of returning it, but now I see it's probably not worth it. I am so disappointed, because I loved this camera!

screen failure (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

took camera to northern territory ,took some wonderful shots. camera has a lot of very impressive features, and is realitivily straight foward to use. then 18mounths down the track the green purple syndrom has crept in and now the camera is useless, my husband paid $899.00 for it for my 38th birthday,he is not amused.
we will have to wait until after newyear to get a reply from fuji, and by the looks of it we will be in for a fight.

Double dumb (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I have purchased the F-700 a few days before my daughter was born. I previously had a Fuji 6800 which always had used to take nice pics, but the zoom went bad and would give an error. I just chalked this up as being caused by me as I had taken the camera everywhere and took almost 4000 pictures with it. Well, I figured another Fuji would give me the same quality, but I would take care to never abuse it. Well, at first I thought the F-700 was great due to it's incredible speed. That was until I got to look at the pictures it took on the computer. The sensor was definitely different and did not take as nice pictures. What a disappointment. I used the camera for a little over a year and a half and then one day the sensor quit working. All pictures you try to take turn out black. The LCD screen can display pictures that are still on the xD card, but that really doesn't provide any benefit. I am disappointed with the quality of images and the poor quality of the product not lasting very long (and with the 6800, which now I am thinking was not due to over-use). Anyway, I would not recommend purchasing a Fuji to anybody considering a nice Point and Shoot. I finally caved in and got a nice SLR digital camera Olympus E-volt 500. I am sure there is a difference in longevity/workmanship and that it will last more that 2 years of use.

Not Worth the Money (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Have owned for over 3 years. Was VERY happy with the quality of the camera until the first warranty (thankfully) issue. United Camera did a great job and after 2 weeks we were back on line. Now a year later it gives us a "fuzzy" screen and won't take a pic. Will cost just about as much to replace it as to fix it. For the initial investment, we are disappointed with the quality. Too bad :(

reliability sucks (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

after minimal use and taking great care, the picture takes completely black pictures. I heard Fuji issued a bulletin stating they will fix this problem for free if your serial number falls within a certain range. My doesn't. I just sent it into Fuji. We'll see what they say. Very disappointing to spend $400 on a camera that doesn't work for very long. Don't buy Fuji!!!

Great at first, then forget it. (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

After much research, I bought the F700. For the first year it was great, I loved it and the pictures it took. Then one day, I got the white image screen other reviewers mentioned. Sent it to Fuji under warranty for repair. Had to call them after not hearing anything for 3 weeks, they told me it was being evaluated. After 2 more weeks, Fuji claimed it was damaged and would not honor the warranty. After strong protests taking about 2 more weeks, they agreed to repair it under warranty, but said the parts needed to come from Japan and it was unknown how long it would take to receive them. They gave me a choice of selecting one of 2 other models as a replacement. After research over the weekend to learn about the 2 possible replacements, I called them on Monday with my selection. They then told me the parts had been received for my F700 and it was being repaired and I would receive it in approximately 15 days. 4 weeks later I received a brand camera (different model from the 2 I had been offered) in the mail because the F700 could not be repaired. They claimed this replacement was a better camera, but I am still unhappy. Sold the replacement on eBay and bought an Olympus so I could still use my xD cards.

Very disappointing (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Bought this camera based on the favorable experiences of three colleagues. I should have waited until they had used their cameras for at least 6 months. After a year or so all three of us have experienced all kinds of problems with the F700. Mine developed the purple and green screen syndrome so I sent it to Fuji for repairs. I had to pay $150 up front and after about 8 weeks it was returned to me with the same purple and green screen problem. Fuji has offered to replace it with and a F450 or a F10, but having been burned on this I have to wonder if staying with Fuji is a mistake no matter what product is involved.

You need to own this camera longer before you review it! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I have decided that you need to own your camera for at least 2 or 3 years before you can review it.

Nearly ALL the good reviews for this camera are done by people who have had the thing for less than a year. The rest of the reviews are all bad.

Therefore if you come in here to rave about your F700 yet youve only had it a short while. Wait. If your camera is still good in 3 years, post your raves. But chances are your camera will break down after the first year.

Terrible camera.

Evil camera lulls you into thinking it is good. Then it turns on you! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

At first my camera worked like a dream. I did alot of research and decided this suited me perfectly. I took 8 months of gorgeous pictures. Then 2 months before MY WEDDING the camera wigged out. The screen and pictures all became green smears.

I sent the camera in under warrentee and it took 3.5 MONTHS to get it back. I MISSED HAVING A CAMERA FOR MY WEDDING! I had even bought two 1 Gig extra memory cards and an extra battery with rechareger for the camera! I wasted a bundle of money to have my camera NOT be there for the wedding.

Now, a month after I recieved my referbished model the "new" camera is having another problem. It will not take clear pictures. The focus is off. So it is being sent back for repair AGAIN.

Horrible camera. I will NEVER buy from Fuji again. Not even standard 33mm film. They totaly ruined my wedding picture plans and the camera is still a dude.

I plan on buying a cannon or sony or nikon or ANYTHING BUT a fuji.

Excellent Camera (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I've had my Fuji FinePix F700 for over two years now, my husband purchased it for me as a gift. I've never had one problem with the camera, and it goes everywhere with me. I even bought the underwater housing for it when we took a vacation to St. Thomas so that we could take some underwater photos as well as video. The camera is still in perfect condition. The quality of the photographs is excellent and it is a sturdy little camera after all I have put it through.

I also have a FujiFinePix S1500, but would rather use my F700 most of the time.

Terrible First Digital Experience (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Got the F700 as a Christmas present in 2003. It worked wonderfully for 9 months; then a bad outdoor overexposure problem was fixed under warranty, but took 10 weeks. Now another 11 months later the lens won't retract and being out of warranty it will cost me a bundle. It's now time to shop for another camera and I will never buy any Fuji product...ever.

Just like all the rest :( (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Wow, glad I found this message board, was about to consider buying another f700. Now that i see so many having the same problem that just developed on mine just shy of 2 years....I'm glad I didn't pay the full $500, got a deal at $315 in Jan2004. The camera has been great, super pics, then a few weeks ago I noticed the photos were'nt coming out like they normally do. Seemed like over-exposure. Then today I went to use it and all I get in the camera function is a blank screen and same with the pics, all black. Sounds like the electronics board inside is too susceptible to power surges. Right before it totally died, my 2 year old daughter was enjoying herself pressing the lighted Power button on the charging stand multiple times. It's too bad, I liked the great quality pics, small size and easy to use functions. I'm just glad I didn't pay the full advertised price..... I will have to find a new model before the holiday season....and my inlaws have the same camera, I hate to have to tell them theirs will be gone soon as well. We bought them at the same time!

I owned my for F700 for only 2 years and only used it lightly never exposing it to any harsh conditions or damage and suddenly one day when I used the camera I noticed every picture I would take in every possible setting was either outlined with a broad white border or completely white. This camera is a complete rip off and the Better Business Bureau should be notified about the lack of respect paid to costumers who shell out $400 for a camera by a company which claims to be legitimate. This is no exaggeration I will NEVER buy a Fuji product again, I suggest you do the same or learn the hard way.

Another problem with the F700 (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Quality of images/pictures has been good and I have not experienced any of the streaking other users have. Don't think I will, either. The lens has stuck open and/or closed from time to time. I have attributed it to a low battery. The last time I charged it, though, was evidently really the last time. My 700 had been working fine and I charged it in anticipation of an end-of-the-summer party on Labor Day weekend. After it was finished charging I went to use it and found that the lens would not open. The display shows a black screen with "ZOOM ERROR". From everything everyone is writing I guess my camera is history. This camera is not even a year old, has been used by an adult, has never been dropped or exposed to moisture. Ridiculous. I'm going back to my old SLR.

I thought I'd bought a bad batch but after reading the reviews Fuji are a bad batch! Streaks through the display and pictures (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Looks like I've got another of the poor quality cameras. Started with streaks on the display at power up, but would clear after the first picture. Now, the color streaks have given way to a black and grey blur, which doesn't clear, and leaves the camera basically useless. I've not contacted anyone for repair yet, but it doesn't sound like that will be very fruitfull.

My camera functioned fine for 2 years until all the frames showed up streaked in pink, purple & green yesterday. I spent all day photographing a National Park just to find out the pictures are now purple smears. I was worried about "what to do". Seems like I just saved myself a lot of time and costly repairs after reading everyone's comments. I'm not giving anyone any more of my hard earned money. They got me for $500 but no more. I'm tossing it in the garbage. I'm really mad because I thought I'd have that camera for years.

good pix, unreliable camera (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I received the camera as a gift, and was VERY happy with it for almost two years. Apparently mine lasted a bit longer than most. One day I picked it up and saw horizontal purple and green lines filling the screen. Fuji replaced the ccd assembly for $170.00, in about 10 weeks (ccd out of stock.) My daughter's Fuji F700, which we purchased about a month after I got mine, went on the blink right after I got mine repaired! We will NOT repair it, but invest the money in a more reliable brand. Every other camera I have ever had worked perfectly until the day I retired it. (Minoltas, Canon- none digital, though.)

Wonderful when new; Terrible after a year and a half (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I did a lot of research and settled on the F700. For the first year plus, it worked very well and I was very satisfied. It has a lot of really nice features. Then one day, I got the streaks in the LCD and a couple of days later, the black screen when trying to take a shot. So far, the viewer still works but I cannot take a picture. This is extremely disappointing and based on what many others have experienced with the repair etc, I would not consider another Fuji. I do not have the extended warranty so I guess I now have an very expensive paper-weight.

Mixed Feelings (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I have had this camera for 2 years now, I love the camera as far as the "typical" picture is concerned. However, my parents have a Kodax 5 megapixal and the quality is better than the Fuji "6.3". The last week though the camera started flashing the, common from what I hear, red, green, and purple streaks, and it took 2 days for it to go completely black. I bought the Best Buy 4 year warranty (I never deal with the manufacturers) and I am still waiting to hear what the plan is. I will update on the outcome.

Pink, purple and green streaks (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

At 18 months the Fuji 700 started throwing pink and purple, later also green, streaks onto the LCD monitor and in the finished pics. Now I can't see anything in the monitor but strange streaks of color. Took it to the authorized repair center and they want $200 to put in a new circuit board. Fuji says to mail it in. I have reservations on that. If they can't produce a camera ($500 in Jan. 2004) which lasts a few years, what do they know about fixing the broken one?? I invested in a 512 MB card and am thinking about buying an Olympus so I can use the card.

Yet another sudden exposure problem (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Just out of warranty my camera suddenly develops the problem! Occasionally I get a shot which is very good and similar to that experienced before this problem started. However more often than not I get a totally white image or an image with a white border fading into the center of the image to different degrees. Often when using the flash the same problem occurs but also includes a white area in the centre of the image. Local dealers have advised that Fuji will not look at it without a £40 deposit but that would be deducted from any repair cost that usually exceeds £130 - I don't think so! My initial pleasure with the camera has turned to great disappointment. I'm now looking for an Olympus so that I can continue to use the numerous xd cards that I have invested in.

Cheaply made product (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This camera takes really nice pictures, but, unfortunately is plagued with repair issues. In the 1 year of owning this camera it has mysteriously broken 2 times, and cost me the retail value of the camera in repairs.

The first issue was over exposure. I sent the camera in for repairs and was told it wasn't covered under warranty because of "fluid damage".

At the time I was quite skeptical, and the overwhelming similarities on this review page confirm my suspicions that there never was any fluid damage. Just an excuse to not honour my warranty.

The second issue was the camera taking black photos. My repair quote said I had a "cracked lens". Odd considering the camera worked until I plugged it in to charge the battery.

Regardless, I would not recommend buying this camera as it will cost you a fortune in repairs.

I'm really not crazy. (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I thought it was just me. I have had so many problems with Fuji that I wondered how they were still in business.

I had problems from the beginning and sent it for repair. They charged me $119 because I had two dings. It took twice as long as they said it would AND they put the order number in the purchaser's (my boyfriend) name, even though I specified my name and address.

The camera came back not fixed and with a new problem: The battery would not hold a charge. They did however fix the cosmetic problems that I did not care about.

The second repair took even longer. They told me they would give me a new camera...NO. I can tell they just put a new case on it because they didn't secure it shut. The original problem is still not fixed.

I have thought about writing a complaint letter, but I know it will not help. They are too far from being helped I think.

So, I've chalked it up to a wasted $500. I feel there is nothing I can do, but move forward and spread the word about how bad Fuji treats their products and customers.

Good pics but now a couple of problems (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I got the f700 about one year ago as I hoped it was a great camera taking great pics. At first everything worked great and the pics I took during a vacation to the U.S. were all beautiful. But there problems started. Once I couldn't turn it on but then it worked again. Now I have three more problems: Whenever I replace the battery all data e.g. language or quality is lost!
Then there's a great number of failure pixels on the LCD that are e.g. all red or green!
And whenever I take a pic when I just put the lens on a table, there are always white spots on the pics and always at the same place.
Now I have to send the cam to Fuji Europe hoping they'll fix it soon. They said it would be about three weeks.. Will see.
I'm quite disappointed of the high prize and the low quality of the parts.

This little camera worked great up until a few days ago. The last picture I took was all white. The camera lost power and won't retract the lens. Based on the other postings, I'll presume it is dead and replace it. I agree with the other listings ... not interested in wasting $450 every two years.

Screen Malfunction (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Our camera is less than 1 year old and already had to be sent in for repairs. Apparently Fuji F700 has problems and will either be replaced or fixed. The screen malfunctions, making the camera unusable. Fuji knows the problem, but does not seem quick to correct the situation. We have 3 of these cameras in our immediate family and all have had the same problem. So far, we have been without a camera for 8 weeks and still no update on how this will be resolved. Customer service is rude and unhelpful. Originally we were told the camera may be replaced at lesser megapixel & optical zoom.

Plaugued with problems. Fuji couldn't care less about it. (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I bought this camera based on its impressive list of capabilities and the Fuji name. Took it on a 2 week trip to Germany. Brought it home and looked at pics to discover that there was a hair inside the lense somewhere, and that the hair showed up on all the pics! Very disappointed. Sent it in under warranty and had it cleaned.

2 months later the lcd screen quit working. Sent it in for repair to the Fuji repair center. After 2 months of excuses about parts out of stock, a camera arrived. NOT my camera, however. This one had seen so much use that the text on the thumbwheel selector were all worn off. I called them on this, and they offered to send my someone elses used camera. No thanks. Ended up having to take this camera for a 2 week vacation to Norway. Beautiful scenery. The camera did ok until the screen died AGAIN. Have not contacted Fuji on this one, but now my warranty is expired. I won't be buying another Fuji camera.

Horrible service! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I have had incredible results with this camera. I was really satisfied with it.

Then it happened, I was shooting pictures in fog/mist like conditions.

The camera stopped working for a few days. Then it came back, but I could see spots on the lens.

Tried cleaning the lens, to no avail, the spots are from the inside.

Sent the camera back to Fuji, they said that it is not warrantied because it is water damage. To top it all of, they say that it would be to expensive to repair the camera.

They had the audacity to offer to sell me a refurbished camera for 340$.

You would think that a 500$ would have some type of seal to stop moisture from getting into it.

No where in the manuals does it state you can not shoot in fog/mist like conditions.

Looks like another case for the BBB.

Buyer beware! Do not support such a crooked company.

Unacceptable! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

The first F700 I got ($400) worked for a while then started giving me all-or nearly while pictures. Overexposure when outside. The shop where I had a 2 year warranty said it's the CCD. Sent it for repair. The USED one they sent me back had the same problem right off the bat. Sent that one back too, still on warranty; it's been almost 3 months. Kits Cameras now looks bad because of Fuji's terrible camera.
Has anyone heard directly from Fuji about this common overexposure problem with the F700?

Status Quo (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

It seems as thought the life expectancy of this "6.3 megapixel" camera is 1 to 1.5 yrs then you can count on it dying for one reason or another and Fuji will NOT stand behind their product. For $400 I could have purchased a product that would have lasted atleast more than 16 months. What is wrong with this mfger, stand behind your product and take care of your consumers...back to made in America for me! So much for Fuji taking care of the pics of my 5 month and 22 month old anyone else upset that Fuji will not stand behind the product that produces their customer's families memories?!?!

Sorry, I can't afford that kind of expense every 18 months.

Sorry, we took care of the camera.

Fuji Lies (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I bought my F700 less than a year and half ago. I also got the 1-year extended warranty. It was doing fine until just after the warranty expired - then the overexposure problem kicked in. I took it to Ritz Camera for service and they said 8-weeks max to get it back. Well it's been almost 10 weeks. I've called and emailed Ritz and Fuji to find out what's going on. Ritz says they talked to Fuji and parts are on back order. Fuji says they're sending a new F450. Long story short, steer clear of Fuji. My wife owns a Canon (S-10?) And she loves it. Never gives her trouble - even after 4 years. So go with Canon o - much more reliable and better service quality.

Craptastic (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Just like the other reviewers, we had no trouble with this camera for the first year but in the last month, since we had our first baby and would like to use the camera more than ever, we are plagued with problems. The screen goes nuts and I can't capture any images. I contacted fuji and they recommend I send it in for repair but gave me no indication of time or cost. We, like the other reviewers, will not likely buy any additional fuji merchandise.

Over exposed pictures with F700 (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I have had my camera for 7 months when I had to send it back for repairs due to the over exposure pictures I was getting when I took pictures outside under sunny conditions. I would get either a picture with no image, just white or an image that you couldn't even make out.Since I take alot of pictures outside whether it be people, nature or wildlife I was very upset with this problem. I called and they told me it was a problem with the meter and send it back for repairs. After 1 month of them having my camera I called and was told that the parts where on order and they should have them in a couple of days.I just called again this week (2nd month) and was told they are still waiting for the part. When I got upset with them they offered to send me another camera(F450).I said no I wanted my own camera fixed.Today I received in the mail the F450.I will be calling them back as I do not want this camera. With all there latest technology you would think they would perfect a product before they put it on the market for the consumer.I am very disappointed and would not buy another Fuji product.

replaced upon service (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

After waiting 2 months for the F700 to be serviced, I was sent a new camera (F450).
It was the second time in a 13 months the camera
had to be sent out for service.

Very Disappointed (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This camera was my first digital and I spent months researching the best one to buy. I was very happy with the camera for just over a year (used very infrequently) when, at my brothers wedding, it took one good picture and then every picture came out white. It has been the same since. Reading the above reviews I feel it is pointless to get this camera repaired and I am disgusted that it lasted only until it was out of warrenty. I will never buy Fuji again.

This Camera Is Awesome!! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

After 10 months and more than five thousand pictures we love this camera. Indoors, outdoors, low-light, bright light it takes great pictures. Our Fuji has gone through thanksgiving, Christmas, Prom Night, graduation. birthdays, golf, school activities you name it. We have done several slide show presentations for our kids' school, uploading pics from our Fuji and using other software to create a slide show. We always have people asking what kind of camera we used and comments about how great the pictures are. My 18 year-old is looking for a new camera and she is shopping for a Fuji!

Over exposure has me disappointed (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

When I first bought this camera I was thrilled. I am an amature but take many pictures. I have had 2 kodaks but tend to be rough on camera's and they broke. This camera was working well until I ran into this over exposure problem. Nothing helps and now I can't take pictures with a white background.

Overexposed whatever you try (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I'm very disappointed with my F700. It's almost useless outdoors unless it's very cloudy. No matter how far you push the controls it overexposes like crazy. Shooting video clips in the same conditions works just fine. I'm researching to buy a new digital camera. I'm never buying Fuji again.

Amazing 3.0 megapixel (6.0 interpolated) machine! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Fuji created a winner with the F700, I shoot professionally and this camera is packed with features that will satisfy everyone from the beginner to the pro. I love the design, the all metal body, the size and the quick start up time. All this I love about this camera but the thing that made me buy this camera is the minimal shutter delay. It is truly one of the faster point-n-shoots I've tested. Shutter delay is a real problem with many of the point-n-shoot cameras. Fuji also wins with the Super CCD technology, recording shadows and highlights simultaneously with two separate 3.0 meg sensors. I've made prints from the F700 and my respect deepened for this amazing little machine. Applauds go to Fuji!!!

Disposable Digital Camera (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This is my first digital camera. I waited for the price point, researched to death, listened to others, and finally took the plunge. For 2 years, and perhaps 500 pictures, few complaints. Lots of cool and useful features, and decent if not spectacular images.
Then one day out of the blue, the ccd went (who says planned obsolescence is dead). No problem, I took it to a local repair shop and was informed rather bluntly, that Fuji is considered the worst of the worst in terms of quality and reliability. Basically, if it needs new parts (and they fail more often than all others) other than a battery or memory chip - toss it.
They fixed it (or tried to) by reseating the ccd and connections for a nominal fee, but it's acting up again.
I'm giving it to my 6 year old kid to play with. Sometimes it works, sometimes you get a lovely acid-trip image.
I'm buying a Nikon, like I should have in the first place.

F700: overexposed in bright situations (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I've just returned my second F700 because of the same problem: This camera cannot deal with exposures in high light situations, so I get extremely overexposed pictures (unusable) outdoors. No one at the Ritz camera store could tell me what was wrong. So, for the second time I have to wait 4-6 to even eight weeks while the company sends it to their repair site. 1st time I got back a used, battered camera - with the same problem. Now I have to wait again - results uncertain. Anyone else find this problem?

Very, Very Big Disappointment (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I researched for over a year before buying a digital camera. We decided on the Fuji F700 because of the size, Fuji's name recognition, price and because the camera was a "6 megapixel" camera.

We have used this camera for over a year and what a disappointment. First, the price we paid was close to $400. Second, image quality is horrible - even for a 3 megapixel camera. I wouldn't mind the price if the picture quality was up to par, but it isn't.

After reading a review in consumer reports that listed the F700 as a 3 megapixel camera (after we had already purchased the camera), I called Fuji. I felt that even though I thought the image quality was horrible, I bought the camera under the impression that it was a 6 megapixel, not a 3 megapixel camera. I was hoping they would offer a refund or something for our dissatisfaction. Needless to say, Fuji said the F700 is a great camera and still stand by that it is a 6 megapixel camera. I feel that we were "taken."

I have tried to play with the settings and develop our pictures at different places -- but nothing helps the quality of the images from this camera.

I wasn't looking for a professional camera, but I wanted a camera that you couldn't tell that the pictures were taken digitally or from film. For the price, you can get a better digital camera where the pictures do not look so "digital."

The saddest part is that I am stuck with this camera and cannot afford to buy a new one. We just had our first baby, and this camera has taken the most awful pictures of our son's first few weeks. That is something that we cannot get back.

Assignment Australia (anonymous — 07/18/2006)
Two months in Western Australia and Australia's Northern Territory, photographing people, wildflowers, wildlife and spectacular scenery as freelance photojournalists for Canadian newspapers. Camera of choice: Fuji FinePix F700 for its 6.3-megapixel capacity, 3x optical and 2.2x digital zoom, amateur-friendly manual overrides and ability to capture the brilliant blues and reds of the Australian outback. This 6.7-ounce marvel packs a mighty wallop photographing people and scenery. Our pictures from this trip have illustrated stories in the Vancouver Sun and Edmonton Journal. More will follow. The F700 handled severe conditions, from the rain and wind of Albany and Yallingup in the far southwest of W.A. through the dry gorges of the Pilbara and Kimberley country, to the smoke and humidity of Darwin just before The Wet. It was superb at capturing a low-light sunset camel ride in the dry bed of the Torrens River in Alice Springs. After a late-afternoon reunion photo session, our family of nine sibling adults agreed results from the F700 were better than those from a Nikon D70.
