HP Photosmart 435

Editor's Review

The HP Photosmart presents an option for consumers on a tight budget, but don't expect anything more than mediocre photo quality. With no optical zoom and a fixed focus, the HP 435 offers nothing but the basics -- which may appeal to first time photographers or those with very limited needs. Shop around, as you'll likely find better image quality from a less-expensive 2MP camera.

Horrible! (Chrissy — 07/01/2007)

I've had this camera for quite some time now.
Its a battery eater.
You might get 10 pictures before it dies, if you're lucky.
The display sucks.
I've had to tape it to get battery connection.
Its just an all around horrible camera.
But being that it was a Christmas gift and the camera that got me into photography, I don't hate it.

Fortunately, I have since upgraded to the Kodak z650. I love it. And I'm currently thinking of upgrading to a DSLR.

Avoid if possible (Matt — 02/13/2007)

I got this camera as a graduation present from high school. For an entry level camera it's.... okay at best. It's very easy to use, has its drivers pre-installed on Macs now, and won't break the bank.

However, the display is horrendous; it's grainy and the colors are off (how in God's name did a red look yellow to this thing?!) The flash is also pretty bad; it's bright, but it's a long flash and tends to generate a rather bad shadow. Finally, this thing eats batteries like it's going out of style. On average I'll have to change the batteries twice a week.

There's a reason they don't make this camera anymore. If you want to stay under $160 then go for the Fuji FinePix F20 instead.

Anyone else have problems? (Corey — 11/22/2006)

My photsmart 435 will not read my SD card, or any other SD card for that matter. I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem, and maybe a solution to solve it. Is there a way to clean inside the camera where the card inserts? Please feel free to contact me. corey1753@yahoo.com

Okay (Rachel Morrison — 11/16/2006)

I bought this camera in a bundle with a printer, knowing nothing about cameras: my first digital. For the first two years I hardly ever took pictures, and it was ok. Recently I took an interest in photography and discovered the many limitations. Oh boy. the batteries. You definitely need a ton of batteries and a recharger. You can take an average of 15 pictures before the batteries are dead. But if you give it a break for a few minutes/switch 2 sets of batteries back and forth you can get more out of it. Sound and video quality is pretty bad. You can get about 60 pictures before the internal memory card is full. A lot of the times the pictures are dark/green/ blue. I blamed that on my picture taking but now I'm pretty sure it's the camera. The flash is super slow. Pictures are often blurry because you have to wait so long. For a first time user, this is an ok camera. I have some great pictures. And it was only $150, sooo...but if you're at all serious about picture taking, DEFINITELY upgrade. Why buy HP when you can get a more trusted, long lasting brand?

Worst Camera I've ever had (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This is by far the worst camera I've ever had, I bought it for about $130 and free with the printer. Dead pixles are everywhere, photos look like crap, pictures come out grainy - with flash or without - and no macro mode. Pictures are also blurry all the time. Never buying an HP again.

i'm irritated (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

this camera is driving me crazy. i got it for christmas in 2004 but it isn't working. I keep getting an "unsupported card" message. No matter what i do i can't get the card to work. Any suggestions? Plus, the camera eats up batteries, and the pics arent even that good. Don't buy this camera.

not too bad (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I corrected the battery problem right away with recharchables! a memory card never worked though, we tried several. It is still working though , the color is great , I have some beautiful pictures of my kids. Several drops on floor, and still working. Door hinge broke , and I have to hold it together with a rubber band ! video quality is poor, but I am still using it!

this is an AWFUL CAMERA. (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

i've had this camera for two years and i am fed up with it. the flash on this camera is completely horrible and there is not one good thing about it. we all know how sometimes our T.V goes out, and we get that gray and white "shhh"ing channel? that's what the pictures turn out like! sometimes the photo does not even come out what-so-ever but instead decides to turn green and blue! every picture i take in a low light room turns out green. hp did an awful job on this camera and there is honestly not one thing good about it. 3 megapixels? are you joking? the video quality is even worse than the camera. yes, it does have sound.. but that does not fix the fact that this is a camera that needs to be thrown in the garbage. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA IF YOU WISH TO BE SATISFIED WITH IT. it is a complete and total waste of money. I'm done with this, and switching to the kodak easyshare v530 instead.

Very easy to use (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This camera is very easy to use and it is so much fun! It was my first digital camera and I was very proud of it. I have owned it for over one year now and I don't like it as much anymore. I do not like the short-lasting battery life, and I even use rechargeable batteries. I am also disappointed that you cannot here the sound until you download the movie in the computer, even though it has a mike. For some odd reason It won't read my memory card anymore, but it reads internal memory. Yes, the same memory card has worked in the past. I even tried putting it into my sister's camera and her camera reads off my memory card. It might just be my camera, I don't know if anyone is having the same problem as I am. Other than that it is an awesome camera!

Average Review for Low priced camera/ CAMERA FIXES MENTIONED (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

The 435 battery life is aweful. I have zillions of rechargable batteries laying around and keep 3 sets with it at all times. Don't expect to get much more than 10 photos with it on a full charge. Photo quality is fine for a cheaper camera at higher settings. In short it's functional but that's it.

For those with malfunctioning SD Memory Cards. That dreaded "NON_SUPPORTED memory card" message is most likely being caused by bent connector pins in the SD slot. Disassemble the camera, look at the pins. Most likely you have broken plastic alignment and a pin(s)pushed back. Push the pin(s) back and glue them fixed with super glue on the back side. Problem fixed.

OH MY GOSH!!!!! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This camera is so horrible. It doesn't have a timer that is definite. The pictures are dark even with flash. It only holds up to like 10 pictures and then you have to delete them. the batteries are depleted after about 4 pictures are taken.

THIS CAMERA ISN'T WORTH ANYONES MONEY!!!!

Good/Average quality camera (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This is not a bad camera to be honet and as others have said it does no way take bad pictures, ive had this camera on only the "better" setting and printed out on expensive photopaper and they are crisp pictures (obiously they could be better) but you could see every detail in my stack system that i took the picture of, i would quite happily recommend this camera, the bad point is the battery side of things, thats why you MUST turn the camera off after youve taken a pic, dont leave it on, so i use rechargeable batteries, and when picture is on "best" the resolution of 2048 is just too big,lol

But on the whole a good camera, good pictures, and printed very well with a decent printer (ie a photosmart 7350) and decent paper, you will get some nice quality photos. If they makde a 5 MP camera of this now, id definately go and buy it (although im sure they offer a very good alternative)

Good for the price (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

It is a great camera for the money and has alot of features that even some more expensive cameras don't have. I use it to take pictures of my husband's band so the light isn't always perfect. Most pictures come out very clear considering the low light conditions. All in all, I am very pleased with this camera.

WORST camera ever!!!!! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Was great at first then the memory card became unsupported. When I contacted HP i was informed there was a defect in the camera. They will not replace it as it is now discontinued. They will repair it, but at my cost!! No satisfaction from the so called wonderful HP company! Totally disgusted!! DONT BUY!!!!!!!!!!

Thee worst digital *if you could call it that* out there (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This camera is so crappy. I too bought it with a bundled package at Target. The price was right but even the HP printer (7760) is awful too. I think these were reconditioned and sold as a package or something. After that I have been leary to buy any bundled items...I think they are refurbished pieces of junk!

Forget it! Don't but this device! Save your money! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

HP should be ashamed! This is the worst camera ever produced.

Battery dies instantly upon using. The web site suggests putting in batteries then turning on while on open baterry compartment and remove the batteries. This is supposed to discharge the capacitor, thereby allowing the batteries to be reinstalled and show full power. (Bull ... this only worked once and since then has been ineffective).

HP needs a talk with the BBB ...

HP should stick to make computers (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

One is better off to go with a name that is known for making fine competent cameras such as Nikon, Canon,Pentax,Konika-Minolta.Firms should stick to do what they do best and in the case of HP it is compputers and printers.

Low Cost but Not Worth It (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I received the camera as a gift along with an HP printer - it came as a set. The camera takes really bad pictures. I always had to fix the pictures with photo software. When I am outside the pictures are very dull and when I'm inside the pictures are very dark - even when I use a flash. The 'best' pictures I get are when I'm about 1-2 feet in front of the subject. Today I was taking pictures and the camera completely failed on me. I did all the troubleshooting recommended by HP to resolve the problem, but nothing worked. I ended up contacting their help line and will have to send them a receipt - which I don't have because it was a gift - in order to get my warranty and get the camera replaced (bummer). This is really unfortunate as this is my child's first Christmas and hello it's just before Christmas. I will have to go buy a new camera anyway, because honestly, this one is just not very good as far as picture quality. If you can image what the pictures will look like in terms of color - look at the HP Photo television commercials with all the crazy picture frame shots - dull, dull, dull. The camera is cost friendly, but save that $80 - $90 and use it towards a better quality camera.

Badly timed flash (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I used this camera on a trip to Washington D.C., and, as an outdoor camera, I have no complaints. Indoors though, it's awful. The flash flashes AFTER the picture is taken, so unless you're in a well lit area, the picture will come out dark...

  • 4.0 out of 5
good for beginners (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This camera takes decent quality pictures and o.k quality movies with sound. You must upload the movies with the required software (provided) in order for the movies to work with sound, but on a fast computer it takes no time at all for the pictures to upload. VERY well priced, and battery life lasts longer if you buy re-chargable batteries and only keep the camera on when in use.

Pictures always dark - even outdoors (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Pictures are very DARK - cannot make out anything in background, even in well lit area. My cheap 35 mm does 100 percent better. Am going to purchase a new digital, but not HP definetely disappointed. Have Hp computer, printer, but this camera is not worth the price.

angry (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I have had this camera not even 4 months! It was a great camera for awhile, then one day I tried to upload my pics and it wouldn't work, and now.. It won't even turn on. The video mode is bad quality it doesn't even have sound. I have re-charged and replaced so.. many batteries on this camera too. I don't think it's worth the trouble.

Nice entry level camera... (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I purchased this camera on the way home for Christmas. While it is not nearly as elaborate as more expensive cameras, it is a nice basic camera that takes GREAT photos!

The movie mode DOES have sound — and it actually sounds great! The batteries do drain (as is true with all digital cameras), but this was fixed by buying a set of Duracell Rechargables w/Recharger at WalMart for about $12. This camera is EXTREMELY easy to use — and it has worked well for webdesign.

I have since purchased two other cameras — both with higher picture quality. However, this one was far easier to use — and is perfect for non-tech savy people.

Not worth it. (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This was my first digital camera, and it first it was great. Easy to use and good for beginners. However, I had to buy a bunch of rechargeable batteries just to keep it running for more than 20 minutes. It isn't durable at all... I've had it for a little less than 10 months and already the battery cover has snapped off and it no longer turns on. The quality of zoomed pictures is very poor and the flash isn't very good either. It's not worth the frustration.

Unsupported Memory Card (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

camera was great initially. Then gave me an "unsupported memory card" message (card worked alright before). Can't find anyone who knows how to fix/resolve my problem re: the SD memory card - anyone out there been able to fix this problem ?

Worse Camera I Ever Had (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I got this camera from my college as part of a Criminal Photography Course. The batteries drain so fast you can only take about 20 pictures on a new set of batteries. Since I got this camera through my school, I have no receipt to return it to Wal-mart...which is where the school said they purchased the camera.

I am sorry I purchased it (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I purchased the HP Photography Bundle package with a 435 digital camera and a 325v printer. What a mistake. The quality is very poor and I am so angry at myself for buying it. It was on sale and also had a rebate...in other words, it was cheap. I got what I paid for. I have no one to blame but myself. I guess I will give it to my 6 year grand child to play with.

Great for the price (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I e package came with a 64MB card and everything I needed. I did upgrade my SD card to a 512 and now I have the ability to take 412 of the highest resolution pics. over 5000 of the lowest res. I also went out and bought Energizer 2500mh batteries. I have been able to take an hour's worth of video and over 100 pictures before having to change batteries. When connecting it to me printer I get great photos using photo paper that are as good as a lab. This camera was definately worth the price.

I had a cheap digi cam before this and was impressed with all of the little tricks this one does, but I was unimpressed I can only go up to 18 pictures before I need to get a memory card. The pictures come out all grainy too,and I can't resize without the grainy factor getting worse =/

I quote Lil Jon: YEYUH! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

What an awesome camera. Stick in some digital camera batteries and it lasts you a good 4 months. Not the best picture quality, only if your picky though. Besides, its small and sleek and catches memories. Great cam.

takes ok pictures (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

my only complaint is: I've tried several sets of rechargeable batteries and every set I've tried only lasts maybe 15 to 20 minutes, then I have to put in another charged set in. I don't understand this, most of my friends have a digital camera, and several have a hp digital camera, and theirs hold charge for and hour or so. I have the hp photosmart 435 3.1 mp with 5 x zoom. what is the deal?????????

Great Cam (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

True, the battery doesn't last very long. If you get some digital camera quality batteries, you should be fine. That works for me and I have no problems.

It's a great camera. I have no complaints. It's also a steal, I say to anyone: BUY THIS CAM. It is terrific. It's very small, compact, and sleek. Not too mention, some of my best photos ever have come from this camera.

GO HP PHOTOSMART 435!!

Excellent Beginner Camera! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Pros: Really easy to use. Takes up to 81 pics with one 64 mb card at highest quality. Perfect for people who aren't computer savvy and good for those who are. (like me)

Cons: Battery life. (not a problem if you got 2500 rechargeable batteries like I did) Optical zoom. (if you wanted an optical zoon then you shouldn't have gotten this camera) Now these are the two that are CONS in my book.

No time stamp feature. The time and date show on the camera but when the pics are uploaded onto your computer you have to put them in manually. It does put them in folders by date however. Easy to do with included programs but it can get boring with multiple pics.

No picture "lock" feature. So that means if you take 50 pics and only want to keep 3 you have to manually delete the other 47 or wipe the entire set. Like I said, easy to do but boring.

Conclusion: Great introductory camera. (I can let my wife and mom use it with no fear) Plus I got it practically brand new on Ebay for under $75 with free 64mb card. Score!

Beginner's Luck (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This camera is all about what the "beginner" wants. Not what he needs.
It'll take fotos but don't expect to be thrilled.
It's like your memory a bit fuzzy but remembers all the important stuff. At the highest quality it can snap 34 Pics in JPEG format. Albeit I had to swap 2 sets of batteries over two days of constant on/off use.

Short battery life (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I've taken about 350 pictures with this camera and have gone through a dozen batteries in one month. The live view drains the battery power but in order to zoom in on something, you NEED to use the live view. I recommend a Sony Cybershot to anyone!

This camera defines "ON A BUDGET" (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

The picture quality was almost perfect when I took a couple of photos the very same day the camera was purchased however, the picture quality (with flash) has now changed to a dark yellowish color. I briefly took no more than 25 pictures total and the picture quality is getting worse with each picture, not to mention the premium batteries lasted no more than 20 minutes total. A major rip-off in my book.

Bad Flash Shots (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I had a Photosmart 320 2.1 and was very happy with it. Sadly though, it got the view screen broken during a flight. We replaced it with the 320 and wish we had done more research first. You cannot take an indoor flash picture. You have to hope to have plenty of light and turn the flash off, hopefully you have a steady hand too!

At first I loved this camera, took good pictures and was easy to use. Now the pictures are terrible they all have green look. Also memory cards didn't work sent it in for repair, got it back then it wouldn't turn on. Goes back for repair tomorrow. Not good when you want to take pictures but its always in repair.
