Editor's Review

Photographers who want high resolution, good zoom, and an attractive price should take a look at the Minolta DiMAGE Z20. With a 5-megapixel image sensor, 8x optical zoom, and intuitive controls, the Z20 is a good choice for novice and amateur photographers alike. The DiMAGE Z20 is a pared-down version of the DiMAGE Z5, offering less zoom power and no image stabilization. Nonetheless, the Z20 comes equipped with an impressive array of features, including fast start-up time, a 1.5-inch LCD screen, and predictive focus which anticipates the movement of your subject.

No problems at all (Jason — 10/24/2008)

I have always loved minolta cameras. This one has not failed me at all and to top it off when I purchased this it was 50% off new in box at a well known retail store. Takes beautiful pics. This has been to London and back. Blows my mom's Olympus Stylus C50 out of the water. The zoom is awesome. takes great night time shots as well.

Intro Excellence... (Robyn — 06/26/2007)

This camera is wonderful for the intro-photographer. It was my first digital camera, and I will be graduating to something a little more SLR-pro soon, because I've exhausted this camera's capabilities for what my imagination can capture to camera-card—but it was the best Christmas gift I ever received. I will miss this little gem. I am making sure it inspires someone to grow with a camera when I sell it...

LCD shutter stuck (Farhain Binte Sulaiman — 12/05/2006)

Got it from a 2nd hand store, still in the box. Thought it was a good deal. They probably experienced the same thing and quickly sold it off. After a few takes, while exploring the functions and buttons of camera accidentally turned the switch to viewfinder mode. However, the LCD shutter got stuck. Sent it back to the store which sent to the agent for repair. Got it back a week later and took some beautiful pictures (about 30 pics) and we accidentally turned the viewfinder switch again, and again it got stuck. Sent back to the store for repair again. Got it back in 2 weeks. Tested the LCD shutter in the store and it was OK. Reached home, took it out of the box, and it got stuck again. Soooo dissappointing. Hope we can get our money back. Why did they invent that shutter thing? Why can't they just have both function at the same time (viewfinder and LCD screen)?

LCD no worky (Dave Smith — 10/10/2006)

10 minutes out of the box, the LCD stopped working. Got authorization to send in for repair. Got it back from repair and another 10 minutes of use, the LCD stopped working. This was on a Friday. So I found this site, while waiting for monday, and read where a chap whacked the camera and the LCD started working. So I held camera in my right hand and hit the left side into my left palm. Turned it on and it worked! It has failed again, but one whack and it's back. May still send it back to repair, but I'll try it for a few more days.

LCD Shutter (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Brought the Z20 in April 2006 and worked perfectly for several weeks.
Never used camera again till July and guess what...... LCD or View Finder do not work and the camera is totally unuseable.
Taking it back to Harvey Norman this week, but after reading other reviews on this problem, i'm not confident that it will be repaired in time (or continue to work after I get it repaired) for an upcoming wedding in 5 weeks.

LCD Shutter problem (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

As most of you , only had it for a few shots before the LCD Shutter jamed .. got mad and gave it a few good WACKSSSSSSS up side it .
Worked for awhile then stoped again so gave it a few more even harder hits and it has been fine ever sence ....... just that I got so mad at it and was reddy to take it back anyway but did not as it was fine ever sence ....

I recommend this camera if you don't want an LCD screen! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Received my camera, took two pictures, LCD shutter jammed. LCD won't work. Camera works well with viewfinder but I really wanted an LCD as I take construction job pictures and many times you can't take a picture with the camera at your eye level. Fine for portraits though.

I am VERY disappointed to read about this endemic problem after failure and researching that failure. None of the reviews I read prior to buying this camera said ANYTHING about this problem.

LCD shutter stuck (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I love the camera!! It takes awsome pictures but, I had only taken a total of 20 pictures when the LCD shutter stuck on me. Now I have to send it to the manufacturer to be fixed and it will be 4 weeks before I get it back. With all the problems they are having with the shutter they should be giving everyone the newest model instead of just fixing it so that it can break again.

Great Pictures in Daylight. (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Takes great pictures (I have taken over 3000 pictures in 1 year), but night or low light pictures do not take as well sometimes. Also, you cannot advance your frame quickly when taking low light pictures, therefore, you miss a great deal of action shots when it is dark or low light.

Required repairs twice in 5 months (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Unreliable camera. Unreliable service.

The first failure happened when the viewfinder field went all white on us, and we were unable to carry out any camera functions.

When we got it back from the NJ tech center, they enclosed a note stating: "unable to duplicate customer complaint."

When we next tried to use it, we were unable to turn the camera OFF !

So, for the second time in 5 months, we were forced to send the camera back for service, and I have no expectation that they will fix it properly.

Great ergonomics, no reliability.

Budget priced giant (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

what an incredible camera the Z20 is. I've had my camera since march 2005 and have taken no less than 4.5 to 5 thousand photos. I would like to give it full points but it lacks an image stabilizer, it would make my great prints even greater. i have noticed colour shift, it shows a yellow tone during autumn/spring, this may be a season thing. It's not been too big a problem as colour shift can be externally corrected. To handle the Z20 is perfectly comfortable but I do get the wobbles and sometimes it shows, probably an age thing(me, that is)!! The zoom function is great and makes for great macro shots and for those where i cant get close enough. All in all I have little to complain about with this camera and can only find praise and recommend it to anyone wanting to spend this little amount of money on a bargain camera. Congratulations Konica Minolta on an ace product. Larry.

malfunctioning LCD (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Bought the camera, LCD never worked. Returned the camera for a new one, worked in the store, took 5 pictures LCD worked fine. One hour later LCD would not work. Great features but not at a sacrifice for quality.

Takes blue colour flowers that are purple (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

The camera takes some types of purple flowers as blue. It seems to occur only with flowers as purple objects are ok.

Very easy to use and great take great pictures. (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Had to send it back today only after 4 days because the LCD screen nor the view finder works, every thing else ok. Getting a replacement tomorrow and hope it lasts.

Nice and clear pic's! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Well, i got this amaizing cam:) and i must say...i'm impressed!
i took it to my friend's house and we did a little test:)
in a low-light condition with a street full of smog(like in london i think)
object: Mashine-half lighted by 2 small town-lamps:)
verry difficult was to focuse, but Minolta made it!:) and i got a clear good contrast picture with a lot of detail...but i must say i used a tripod .
The opponent was an Olympus C-765UZ! that got just a little better pic, cuz of the biggest zoom, and smallest ISO! ( we took all pic' on auto+night mode) so the Minolta had the 160 ISO on auto!...imagine the difference! but surprisingly, the noise of pic's was almost the same only by enlarging the picture, we could able to see the noise on Minolta pic's:)
sooveall it's the great cam! suggest...and i didn't mentioned any problems with switching electronic viewfinder:)

LCD shutter broke in 10 minutes (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Unpacked the camera at 3:00 pm. Six experimental pictures later (10 min), LCD shutter stopped working????

May take great pictures but . (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Ater 2 days the shutter jammed a 2 hour drive back to shop who were happy to replace the camera. A week later while on holidays in New Zealand the shutter jammed again. What a lot of money to spend on something that only partly works

LCD Switch Finder Jammed (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

The LCD Switch Finder, aka "LCD Shutter", has jammed on my camera. I had only taken a few test shots with it, which were high quality pics. However, the jammed switch makes the LCD inoperable. I'll ship mine in for a repair tomorrow. Great manufacture job, Konica Minolta. I only wish I could have returned it for a full refund and bought a Fuji.

Happy with it but... (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I wish I had read about other owners' reviews regarding the malfunctioning LCD shutter before I bought it. I thought it was just me (again - anything I own with batteries or plugged to an electrical socket seem to last too short for me to enjoy). I had to return mine after 2 days to be replaced because the LCD shut down on me. Aside from this, I'm also concerned with the flimsiness of the battery door and the plastic threaded tripod mount. Despite these, I like its overall design. I'm also pleased with its ease of use and the quality of pictures we've taken so far both indoors and out. It has a lot of features that satisfies the photographers of the family regardless of their experience and level of photographic knowledge. Most of all, it's priced more than reasonably for budget-conscious buyers like me.

SHUTTER LOCKS and LCD DOESN'T WORK!! Great pics though... (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I bought my first Z20 three weeks ago before a trip to Ireland. I took it home, took three pictures of my cat and the shutter locked in the viewfinder position. I could not get the LCD screen back up. I took it back the next day to a very reputable NYC camera store and they gave me a new one. It worked in the days leading up to my trip, but as soon as I set foot in Ireland, the shutter locked in viewfinder mode and I couldn't view the LCD again!! During my week-long trip, the LCD intermittently would 'open up' only to close once I took a few pictures. What is the story with this?? Clearly there is a manufacturing problem!! It's too late to take it back to the store I bought it from so I called Konica Minolta who said I had to send it back and it'd take 4 weeks to fix it....frustrated!

However, the camera does take great pictures.

LCD Shutter Problem (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I really like my Z20, in fact, I always had it in my bag whenever I'm on the move, including to work! The image is sharp. I love optical zoom & the macro feature! And with a 4 second exposure at capturing city street lights with the help of tripod, it's simply great. Unfortunately today I had my LCD shutter jammed! I didn't like the way LCD had to be shut mechanically but hey, can I argue with the price I'm paying for? Still, at the end of it, its the quality of the images that matters :) .

Faulty shutter on LCD monitor (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

When we went to purchase this in Malaysia the shutter failed on the first camera out of the box so they gave us another. when we got home 2 days later the shutter failed on the new one without having taken any photos. I have just received another new replacement (even though it is a strict repair only policy on international warrantee) however after half an hour use the shutter has failed on this camera. not happy...I am pursuing Konica now to pay a bit more and obtain a Z3 or Z5 which does not have the shutter....not happy jan!

poor first impression (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I bought the camera yesterday when I was impressed with the features. sadly had to be returned to the supplier this morning as my computer shut down when I connected the camera to it. The supplier tried it on his computer with similar consequences. The battery cover is also very flimsy. My supplier will be replacing me with a similar model. When contacted the Minolta help line say that they have never come across a problem like this.

I'm in Digital Love (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I purchased this camera as a replacement for my older (Kodak) digital camera and have been using it for a relatively short while. I'm incredibly impressed by the ease-of-use (buttons are clearly identified), the quality of the images, and the "out of the box" usability. I love that it can be a 'point and shoot' camera AND that I can choose to do everything manually to get the perfect result. I have absolutely no negative feedback on this camera!

Very impressed - so easy to use (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

It is a great camera - so easy to use and light- weight. I'm a first time user of a digital camera and it has come in handy so many times.
I have taken more than 150 photos of everything from close ups to landscapes and even great photos of Bryan Adams in concert. I have even taken shots for publication because of the high resolution and zoom features. Never has it been easier to take a photo and show my family and friends on my computer or even via the TV. It is just great and I'm so glad I ordered one. I am still learning the features of this camera but if I have had this much success already - honestly anyone could use it.

Perfect Camera (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I own this camera for three weeks now, and I'm very pleased with it. Bought it with a 512MB SD-card, which can handle about 250 pictures (highest quality). I never use the automatic setting, defining the shutter-speed and the diaphragm by yourself is much more fun. The possibilities with this camera are enormous. Great zoom range, also with the digital zoom disabled. The Macro-function is also a great feature. Considering the 5.0 MP, the 8x optical zoom and it's price (239 pounds), this is one of the best camera's in it's class!!

Great Low end Pro-Am Camera (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

After a lot of research I decided on the Z20 for its zoom features and cost. It has a very fast AF and start up and as many manual settings as you really need.

As it doesn't have lamp assist AF its not that great in low light however you do have manual focus.

All in all excellent camera for the money.

display problems (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I too received a Z20 with a malfunctioning LCD shutter. The second one seems to be working OK. For the money, the features and image quality can't be beat. I am concerned about quality of manufacture. The battery door feels like it might break easily.

Don't bother (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

received my DiMAGE z20 today and it's already on it's way back to the supplier, the shutter is faulty and the lcd monitor does not work, the build quality is cheap and nasty and the overall quality is very poor..i think I'll stick to Fuji in the future.
