Editor's Review
Nikon finally got the ruggedized camera right in the AW100, it seems. The AW100 is still a compromise in some respects (battery life), but image quality is good enough for most purposes and, with waterproofing to 33 ft and shockproofing to 5, it can take a solid beating. Unlike Panasonic's newly-announced TS4, the AW100 sports a CMOS sensor and a high-resolution LCD. It's also quite a bit cheaper than some of its ultra-rugged competition.

Nikon COOLPIX AW100 Comments & Questions (write your own!)
Nick (04/08/2013)
Which camera would have better picture capability, the Canon Powershot A720 IS, or the Nikon Coolpix AW100? I'm trying to figure out if I should just use an underwater camera case with my older Powershot A720 IS, or use the Nikon AW100 instead? I'm also curious which would produce better quality pictures once above the water also?

The AW100 would have much better image quality, there's twice as many megapixels, plus the newer cameras have better sensors. In the water and out the newer model is likely to do much better.

Since it is waterproof to 33 feet and you'll be staying near the surface, yes.

I'm not sure if it was ever mentioned, but given all these features for AW100, how long can the battery last, in average?

No more than a couple hundred photos, but that's average these days.
