Highly stylish and highly sensitive, the Nikon Coolpix S200 makes for a nice fashion accessory and offers ISO levels up to 1000, great for shooting fast-moving subjects or low-lit scenes. Sounds like a perfect party camera. Throw in the D-Lighting feature, which can improve poorly exposed photos after they've been taken and the S200 starts looking like a great choice for vibrant nighttime photography. Nikon claims the S200 has vibration reduction image stabilization, but it appears to be only electronic, not optical (which is preferred and more effective). Even so, it's better than nothing. If you're looking for a similar camera with "true" image stabilization, check out the Nikon S500.

hello all!

i am a student and i have camera coolpix s200. my camera has just passed its warranty and it isexperiencing the problem of having a black screen with a vertical white line in the middle when i switch the camera on. i can still take photos cos i heard the shutter sound, but all i could see in the screen is blackness and that white line. anyone knows what is the reason behind the problem and how i can fix it??

This sounds like it might be a CCD failure, which could be fatal. A repair might be expensive since you're past warranty. You should probably contact Nikon customer service to find out the details.

If you just passed warranty by about a month, you should try and ask them to repair it under warranty anyway. Be nice and polite about it and they may just do that. I'd also check with your credit card company to see if they offer extended warranty as a perk of membership.

But I'd also try resetting the camera. Sometimes firmware can get corrupted on loaded and a simple camera reset will restore it to factory default settings.

If all else fails, and a repair is in order, understand that without warranty coverage the average cost of a camera repair is around $180. As such, it may cost more to repair than it is really worth. The rule of thumb is that if the estimate for repair is north of 50% what you paid for it, you're better off taking that money and buying a newer and upgraded model.

hello! thanx for the replies but i still dont get the whole picture behind te problem. my camera can take pictures and i can still view them in the computer. just that sometimes when i switch on the camera the grey screen/ black screen with white line in the middle appears and i cant see anything but can still take photos.

Well, as mentioned above, it could be a CCD failure. That's the chip which processes the image (think of it as an electronic version of film). Or, you could have a short in the connections to your LCD screen. Was it dropped recently?

Nikon S200 lens error (Alex888 — 12/12/2008)

My S200 display reads "lens error". I've removed and reinstalled the battery after an hour. Upon reinstall, the lens fully extends, retracts, fully extends again, retracts again, then the "lens error" re-appears on the display. Does anyone out there have experience resolving this issue? Thanks in advance of any assistance you can pprovide.

It could be anything from sand, dust or grit in the mechanism to dropping it and knocking the lens out of alignment. It could also be condensation in the camera (if so, try putting it in a ziplock bag of uncooked rice for a few days - the rice will suck out excess moisture) or mucked up contacts that obscure constant power flow or even your Lithium Ion battery dropping in battery capacity to the point there it can't provide the necessary power for the Nikon to operate (a common flaw in the LiOn design, they dissipate over time).

This site ( camerarepair.blogspot.com/2... ) has some tips on what to try to get your camera up and running again. But in the end, you may be looking at a camera repair. But understand that without warranty coverage the average cost of a camera repair is around $180. As such, it may cost more to repair than it is really worth. Can you replace a cracked LCD screen on the Nikon S200 Coolpix? (11minna — 10/20/2008)

My daughter has the Nikon S200 COOLPIX, my son has a lab puppy. The puppy got the camera in her mouth and her teeth cracked the LCD screen on the inside of the camera. Now the screen is white light with a black spiderweb of cracks running through it. The camera still works and takes pictures without any blemishes. But, b/c there is no view finder on this camera other than the LCD screen, we can't aim the camera correctly for photographing. Anything we can do or should we just buy another camera?

I just successfully replaced the cracked LCD in my S200. Didn't want to toss it, it's a great little camera, and sending out for repair was too much. So I took a chance and bought the part. The hardest part is plugging in the little ribbon connector, just because of its tininess. I took the battery and flash card out before taking the back off the camera. Keep a container nearby for the teeny screws, and a magnifying glass helps for assessing the situation before trying to plug in the little ribbon connector. Gentleness and patience. If you have big hands, find a small dexterous assistant.

my camera lense keeps going in and out when i turn it on and its making this noise. (Jasminexbt — 08/12/2008)

i was at the beach like 2 days before this happened, and like after the beach it wwas all fine, and i took it out the next day at night took pictures PERFECTO, then today for some damn reason the lense went in and out making a ehh noise! its so annoying.

1. i tried banging the SH** out of it

2. i tried pushing the lense.

3. i dont wanna spend like over 100.00 fixing it

4. i need a camera but im not allowed to get another one i think.

Well, "banging the SH** out of it" can only make it worse, Jasmine. Try to avoid that. Possibility that your camera has condensation inside of it. If that's the case, try placing it in a ziplock with a cup of uncooked rice and leave it for a few days. The rice will act as a desicant and draw the moisture out of the camera. It may also be sand in the works and the lens is trying to work it free. Keep cycling it on/off for a few minutes to see if it works it's way free. Outside of that, you may be looking at a repair anyway. And it may be under warranty. I'd send it in and see what Nikon does. Just don't mention the "banging the SH** out of it" or pushing on the lens.

ive cleaned my lens and still my images are blurred.But it seems to be blurred at the bottom and le4ft and right sides of the image not the top or the middle???

any ideas anybody?

First thing I would do is reset the camera. This is a fairly easy procedure which involves either going into your setup menu and choosing "reset" (or intialize), holding down the menu key for 5 seconds, or, removing the batteries for a few minutes. It may be that the firmware loading got corrupted and the camera just needs to be "rebooted," which is something that turning it on/off won't accomplish. But after which, you should have the camera reset to factory default settings.

Another tip is to go to Nikon's website and look for firmware updates. Download and install them.

Canon models are not necessarily better than the cameras from other known brands. It is true that Canon seems to be the most popular brand in US market now. But it does not mean that all Canon cameras are better than the others...

Nikon Coolpix 200 is an average point and shoot camera. In order to give any advice, I need to know what other cameras you are looking for...

Get a Canon. I bought it and it is true, this camera is only good at ourdoor! For indoor, the quality is bad. My old Canon A95 produces better indoor picture than my new Nikon S200!

Outstanding performer (Soon Motay — 02/17/2009)

I've been using different cameras over time and now I proudly own a nikon S200. Its a small camera that fits in the pocket easily. It is so slim. It supports high capacity memory cards. It takes very good pictures. Out of 300 pictures taken none were blurry. A really outstanding performer. I really don't understand reviews from others that rate this Nikon so poorly. It took great photos even in pitch darkness and even then the pictures were of high quality. I recommend this camera for anyone. The casual user, the guy on holidays going abroad, students using it to take pics for projects.

Takes terrible indoor pictures no MATTER what setting you mess with. They are blurry no matter how still. THe white balancing is horrible indoors because of the setting you have to use. I bought this camera because I like Nikon and have owned the D50. Don't know now. Big waste of money.

I got this for my birthday last October i luv it when i first saw it. It was compact, stylish, and fit almost anywhere but the picture quality is so horrible. When i take indoor pictures i comes out blurry too dark just so horrible i didn't like it i do Not recommend this camera for anyone it just a really bad cam but I'm planning to get the Nikon D50 this Christmas

I got this camera for christmas, the first time I used it I took it back to the store. It takes blurry pictures, and the videos it takes are even worse. Nikon really worked designing the looks of this beautifull camera, but did not bother to try to make a good quality camera. If you are a person that likes to save memories in pictures you should not buy this one.

Bought this camera as a last minute birthday present. It looks excellent, easy to use and very compact. In reality, I would have preferred to have a camera with a 2 metre tripod hanging off of it as I found the pictures horrible. Its great to have a tiny, good looking camera but not at the expence of quality pictures.

Worst Digital Camera I have ever had ! (Fustrated Man — 09/06/2007)

Got this camera just because of its compact size and also heard nikon is a good brand to consider. To my disappointment, it took lousy indoor pictures and also produced poor quality pictures even during the day. Ready to sell it away for low price. This is definitely the worst digital camera i have ever had. Feel cheated after buying this piece of junk. I got really fustrated by the results it had given me after taking many shots with different settings. I am not a professional photographer but i do take nice pictures with other digital cameras before. With this camera, i can't even take any decent picture. Does anyone feel the same way as i do ?

Bought it because of cheaper and free accessories given. After 1 day, regret that I did not pay extra 50 dollars to get the Canon Ixus 70, which is direct competitor. I have a Canon A95 and some pictures taken for comparison shows better quality.
