The Nikon S3100 holds up the low-end of the company's "stylish" offerings. For a $140 camera, the metal body and styling are commendable -- there aren't many budget point-and-shoots with this kind of quality construction -- and the 5x zoom range and 720p video are solid for the price, too. Expect acceptable, not great image quality; it'll do just fine as a carry-around camera.

Lens extension & retraction problems (D G Martin — 12/28/2012)
I have nikon coolpix s3100....lens extension and retraction problems are major drawbacks. Seems Nikon Quality has not been applied to this product. Repair costs make this camera an expensive disposable. Lens problems occurred shortly after warrenty expired.

It's not out yet so we can't be sure -- it shoots HD video, which is a good thing. My experience with HD video on these cameras is that it's "good enough." Set realistic expectations, as in, it's fine for sharing short clips with friends/family/your own use, but it's not designed specifically to be a video camera. But, hopefully we'll have a review in a few weeks or so, and will be able to update.
