Nikon Coolpix S710
Editor's Review
The Nikon Coolpix S710 is a flagship ultracompact, containing an immense 14.5 megapixel sensor. Is it worth it? Well, if you want larger, more detailed photos that are ready to crop or be printed as posters, maybe. Otherwise, it's not that big a deal. The S710 also has a large 3-inch LCD display and a wide-angle 3.6x optical zoom lens.

Nikon Coolpix S710 Comments & Questions (write your own!)
In the end, you have a video clip which is good for the web, but not much else.
If video is your hot button feature, you'd be better off looking for a camcorder which saves digital stills to a separate SD card. Many are up to 6 MP now, which gives good quality images for printing.
Thanks for the great answer. What I notice is that the resolution on my digital video camera is flat and "video looking"while my simple point and shoot gives a richer more film like quality on playback. I am assuming that this is due to the 30fps recording method of the point and shoot. I need an inexpensive high quality compact 24-30fps camcorder or point and shoot. I prefer the digital SLRs that shoot video over many of the HD camcorders due to the film-like quality that they produce. Any explanation or comments?
Your task will be much easier if you invest in a dSLR.
Don't let me discourage you though, if you want to have a go at it, there is no harm trying S700 on a few paintings, at the same time take the same paintings with a dSLR, borrow one if you don't already have it, and compare the results for yourself.

Bought this camera while on vacation and had lens errors from day one. After 4 months the lens will not open at all. I wish I had read these comments before I wasted my money on the poor product. I will definately not be buying another Nikon product.

Lousy, lousy, lousy. I don't think I ever got more than 10 shots out of this camera before I started having problems. I went to a festival and the camera just stopped working. It would turn on but would not take a picture. I press the button and nothing. Since it wasn't working, I tried to turn it off - pressed the off button - nothing happened. It was locked and frozen. Took the battery out and put it back in, and it worked long enough to turn off. So I turned it back on and went to take a picture - nothing. I missed all the photo ops at the festival. I got home and charged the battery fully, and it was working again just fine. So I went to another event, got about 6 shots in, and the same stuff started to happen again. Missed all those shots too. I've always had a canon and I should have stuck with the canon, but thought the nikon coolpix would be a good point and shoot. Never again! DON't BUY THIS CAMERA!!

I love Nikon camera's and am on my 3rd DSLR (of which I've had 0 issues) but this is the second S710 I've had...both have died of lense errors and have been nowhere near reliable otherwise. Many removals of batteries and turning on/off to fix lock-ups.
Sorry Nikon...junk.

I owned this camera for about 60 days before I strated havig problems with it.
Dust spots appeared on the screen that did not show up on picture.
NIkon has had this camera for about 4 weeks waiting on parts to repair it. I would have expected a replacement for such a new product.
I have owned about 5 or six Cannons and never had a problem, not sure how they would have handled the problem but Nikon seems to be very slow to respond to their customers complaints.
Bought this compact for a trip and will probably take the full size Cannon.
Shame ion you nikon!

This is a great little compact camera - probably the smallest camera at the moment with aperture & shutter priority and full manual control. Image quality is average with noise at higher ISO being the biggest issue. Colour accuracy is pretty good in a saturated kind of way and that seems to be how most like it. The 28mm end of the zoom is very good but a little more reach would have been welcome. Controls and menu could be improved but there are worse out there. LCD is reasonably good outside. Flash shots are good but ISO200 or higher is required for most indoor shots. If you need a camera that fits in the pocket and still gives you plenty of control, this is it.
For those getting lens errors, keep you fingers out of the way of the lens when turning the camera on.

I had camera for 3 days and this lens error message prevented the camera lens from closing and turning on. I returned it to exchange it, and the day after I had my second S710, I got the same error and the lens became stuck while turning it off and on. I am returning it and getting something different! Great picture quality, but if I can't even get it to power on and off, what good is it?

Had the camera two months never even had to recharge the battery. The lens did not expand out of the camera on st pattys day and could not take pictures. SAD. Good thing i bought the extended warranty because i think i will need it after reading al the reviews.

Used 3 times before it broke due to a spec of dust per Nikon!!! Bought for vacation and got lens error instead! Called and service told me this is a common thing the camera was kept in the nikon case and never had a chance to even get dirty. Nikon says that a small spec of dust can cause this. So I guess ever three times I use this junk I will have to send it in for repair! Never again I should of stayed with Canon, thats what I get for listening to in-laws as to how great of a product Nikon is! I have had SLR cannons and never had an issue! The 3 times I used this camera it took gr8 pictures. Kind of expense $290 and only get 3 uses! The plus is the throw away kodak we ended up using on Christmas turned out okay. Very disappointed in this product. Buyer beware!! I would never buy another Nikon product long as I live. Staying with Nikon. They will not return it jink so I guess I will be returning it every 3 times of usage! Safe yourself the same fustration and buy a Canon!

I have been impressed with the resolution obtained in pictures at close to moderate distances. Sometimes pics are a little dark but D-Lighting feature improves them. File sizes are just a bit bigger than on my D200 so cropping is easy. I really appreciate being able to attach 20sec audio files to each pic. Takes the place of GPS. I am more impressed the more I learn about it. VR feature works very well. It is, as some have reported, a little slow between pics, but oh the picture quality! The large files mean you can do significant cropping and still get a very good picture. It would be nice
if the lens could zoom some more but then where would
you put the additional optical elements?

While I like the features of this camera I am somewhat upset that after having only used this camera a few times it is now broken. LENS ERROR! Ugh.

jpeg files are about the same size as those obtained with my D200 and close to medium range shots appear to be about as good. D-lighting worked as advertised. So far I am well pleased with it.
