Nikon Coolpix S9
Editor's Review
The Nikon Coolpix S9 is a nice ultracompact that doesn't complicate itself with extra features or gadgets. The 6 megapixel sensor is more than enough to satisfy most users, while the attractive body and slim design make it as appealing as far more expensive cameras from other manufacturers.

Nikon Coolpix S9 Comments & Questions (write your own!)
Summing up, it seems the design is prone to dirt and sand which can cause the malfunction. A good blast or two from a can of compressed air is recommended to free it up.
Also, it may be a good idea to try and do a reset to factory settings. Your manual should give you the 411 on how.
Look at these, too, which are better:
steves-digicams.com/2007_re... got the thumbs over in the comparison here, as well.

it was working fine befor then on day stoped :S
when i recharge it the green light turn on when i try to turn the cam on when it is rechargening the green light turns off again :S
what is the problem?
These are two very comparable cameras. Both are tiny point and shoot units with big LCDs and pretty standard-for-their range stats. Both cameras get mostly good reviews from users and pros alike.
You can find a very detailed side by side comparison of the two cameras' stats here ( dpreview.com/reviews/compar... ), but the important differences are as follows:
1. Megapixels. The W70 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... ) packs 7MP into the same size chip that holds the Nikon's 6MP. The 1MP iincrease isn't a huge gain in terms of print size, and packing a million more pixels into the same sensor real estate might degrade picture quality a bit, particularly in low light.
2. LCD. The S9 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... ) has a slightly higher resolution screen (153,000 pixels vs. the Sony's 115,000) at the same size (2.5"). However, the Sony has an optical viewfinder, which is a feature that the Nikon lacks.
3. Memory media. The W70 uses Sony's proprietary MemoryStick cards, which are more expensive and harder to find than the common SecureDigital cards used by the S9.
Honestly, there isn't much difference between these two. I prefer the Sony's more rugged build, but you'd be well-served to read customer reviews, both here and at other sites like Amazon.com. The people who own the cameras know best. :)
Hope this helps.
According to imaging-resource.com's review of the camera:
"Since it's obviously designed as a snapshooter, the Nikon Coolpix S9 is no speed demon. So if you're looking to capture anything more than slow moving action, I suggest a different model. Though the S9 powers on fairly quickly, it's quite slow shot to shot and there's noticeable shutter lag even when you pre-focus. Our tests clocked the camera taking nearly a full second to capture a shot without half-pressing the shutter button at the widest focal setting. When pre-focused, the Nikon S9 still took a quarter of a second to capture a shot which is frustratingly slow if you're trying to capture candids."
I was unable to find any detailed timing charts, but the above commentary should tell you all you need to know.
Good luck!
. . . looking to purchase a camera that I can grow into.
I've got it down to these two cameras, however I don't mind someone recommending me others.
I've been basically going by reviews, however I'm beginning to understand the specifications in
which I desire. Although I'm afraid I don't have enough experience yet to determine what I'll
actually need.
. . . or do you believe its the best choice for me at the moment?
The S9 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... ) is a wonderful little camera but it depends on what you mean by a camera you can grow with. The S9 offers auto control only, and if you want to grow in terms of photo skills you may want to consider something with manual control options.
Casio 270 - 7.2 MP
Both cameras are good for photography. Outside of the megapixels, the Nikon S9 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... ) markets as a gadgetless camera. The Casio Z70 has manual capabilities for its white balance and various exposure settings to use. There are not a lot of big differences between the two though.

I am looking for picture's quality. Thanks
The major differences are listed below (the Nikon S9 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... ) is listed first):
Megapixels: 6.1 VS 6.0
Wireless Capability: no VS yes
The Nikon S9 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... ) is marketed as a no-frills camera that keeps things simple while the Nikon S6 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... ) has wireless download capabilities, in camera slideshow developing, as well as other gadgets. The decision is really up to you and if you want gadgets on your camera or not, as well as how much you want to spend. Good luck and happy shooting.
Andrew
You'll be able to use that 35-80 without skipping a beat.
GOD STORAGE CAPACITY, AND 5 MEGA PIXELS PLUS.
DCHQ offers a great search tool to narrow your searches for a camera by price, megapixel, manufacturer, and type. Just in the $200-$230 range ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... ), there is no camera under 5 megapixels listed. These cameras also have extended memory with removable storage devices. I'd recommend going into a retailer to see how a camera feels in your hand before purchasing as well.
Andrew
No real advice other than gentle twisting and maybe a can of compressed air. Don't open the body, the problem is somewhere in the lens system...
I have heard it suggested that a thread adaptor (the things used to attach various other lenses to the camera) can be used to help protect against things like this... sort of like a slipcover for the lens area.
esnips.com/web/papputatiyas... a detailed step by step repairing.
First of all, with any point and shoot there is a great trick you can use to speed up your shutter lag. Just press the button down halfway before you're ready to shoot, then when it's time for the actual picture push it down all the way. This cuts shutter lag to fractions of a second because it eliminates the "framing" of the photo beforehand, and that's what takes up most of the time.
With that said, here are a few cameras that are reported to have excellent shutter lag times in general:
Sony Cybershot DSC-T9 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... )
Kodak Easyshare C875 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... )
Hope that helps!

I wanted a small digital camera to take pictures of my children. Little did I know this is the worst camera I have ever used! I started taking my old digital camera as back to make sure I didn't miss big moments at family functions and school events due to the horrible quality of photos this Coolpix produced. I gave it to my 5 year old to take pictures with since that is the only use I can get out of it, besides the trash.

I have owned this for over a year now and have been very disappointed. It is my first digital camera I've ever had, and I was very excited when I received this as a gift. My camera has the exact same problem as everyone else reports: pictures are either way too bright and washed out, or else blurry with distorted coloring. It makes me extremely frustrated, as I hardly ever bother taking it out with me now. It's more trouble than it's worth. Buy any other camera than this worthless piece of junk.

My wife wanted a smaller more compact camera. I already own two Nikon digital cameras. But niether could be considered a 'poclet camera". We got a decent deal on this one at BestBuy. But it did not take long to realize that we bought a piece of junk. Only the most uneducated photographer would be happy with this camera. Itwill not take good pictures...unless outdoors in BRIGHT light. Anything less than full on sunlight, and it will underexpose and blur. Any digital camera that only offers ISO settings and not manual shitter settings, will not work for me. The flash is weak, and not usefull. I hate using aflash indoors, and prefer using slower shutter speeds....this camera won't do that. If you turn the flash of, it exposesway too slowly. The autofocus sensor is weak, and quite often, this camera takes out of focus pictures. I would NEVER recommend this camera....at any price.

I wanted a compact digital. Although this is compact, I have chosen to use my 35mm several times as I have lost the opportunity to catch major memories because this camera is not all that is cracked up to be. If you like taking posed pictures under perfect conditions, then this camera may hold up. Otherwise, get a disposable and get better performance.

I bought this camera for the sole purpose of average use. I find myself so frustrated with the camera that it sits at home all time. The only good thing about it is the size and the pink color I purchased.

worst camera ever

People save your money. This camera has been a major let-down for me personally. I have had it for exactly 2 weeks now and am bringing it back to the store tomorrow. I have been unable to get 1 decent shot so far. (And I am a professional photographer, so I obviously know how to work a camera.) The pictures come out very blurry and unfocused, & for some reason always have this glaring light in the background.... Even in natural, outdoor lighting. It's not like I've taken any photos in florescent lighting or anything like that. Sometimes they appear foggy too, as if someone had breathed hot air onto the lens before taking the picture. (Obviously, this is not the case.) Additionally, the delayed reaction is a major issue bc you miss the best shots. By the time the camera snaps the picture, the kodak moment has already passed. There have been times that I held the button for literally like 15 seconds before the camera took the picture. Do not bother with this camera. It is a waste of money.

As a long-time Nikon fan and owner of three of the high-end Nikon SLRs, I ASSUMED that I would be very happy with this camera; WRONG!!! It takes beautiful outdoor photos and should be billed as an outdoor camera only! However, I have NEVER been able to capture an indoor image that looks worth a crap! Red-eye on every picture (no matter what is selected in the menu), horrible washout, and out-of-focus shots are all that I've gotten from this worthless piece of crap! Tossed it to the curb, and lug around my big Nikon's because they are truly fail-safe for high-end quality pictures! Buy an Olympus or anything but this sorry excuse for a portable camera.

I have unfortunately gone through two of the S9's and both have had the same problems. Within one week of my first purchase, my pictures were blurry with spots. Because I really liked the size and style of the camera, I figured I just got a defective one and exchanged it for the same model. Within two months, the same exact problems are happening except now I am outside of the store's exchange policy and I have to deal directly with mailing my camera into Nikon only to get it repaired. It's been very frustrating and I will never buy this model again, re-considering Nikon reliability overall.

Images look 'ok' thru LCD screen but terribly blur on pc monitor. No matter how stable your hands are, quality of pictures is still a compromise. I took the camera back and exchanged with sony W30 and never regretted..

I just bought the s9 and i like the features and user interface. Also the sleek and small design. However i also can not take a really true clear picture no matter what setting i use so i am thinking that maybe it is just a defective unit. My dad was a professional photographer and only used nikon from what i have read they are the best cameras in the world. If i cant take a clear enough image i am taking it back and getting another one.

Although I have only owned the s9 for 2 mos., I have tested it thoroughly. Everything works great including indoor flash photography. It is as if some of the other reviewers who don't like the flash were using another camera. In fact after reading a few of these this evening I tested it all over the house and found excellence. The rich features, great size, very high quality pictures I am very pleased.

I recently got the s9 coolpix camera and found that no matter what setting I put it on, it took pictures that were either extremely bright and washed out, or blurry and off-color. I thought I just had to learn the settings, but after going through almost all of them and reading reviews, I returned the camera and bought a Canon elph and love it. The Canon is just as small, and records the pictures much faster than any Nikon I've had. Don't be fooled by the Nikon's stylish design! It's not worth it!

As a first time owner of a digital camera i would have to say that I'm very impressed with what i've seen so far. I do nt know to much about cameras but this little camera has worked very well for my need and over all hasdone its job very well. So i would have to say if you are a new person to the camera industry like myself i would have to say give it a try.

I bought S9 right before christmas. Not only is it slow but many of the pictures come out blurry or too bright when you view them. I am very disappointed. This is my 4th Nikon and the only one I have not liked. I am returning it to the camera store and trading for another Nikon. I still trust Nikon.

I got the camera for Christmas from Cirucuit City. I could not take one decent picture. They were always blurry or too bright, even with auto flash on. I returned it after one week.

Actually, there are very few, if any, digital cameras that come with internal memory. Consumers always need to buy a memory card with their camera now days. You are right, this camera does have several manual settings. Maybe if you had gone somewhere other than Circuit City, the associates may have steered you in the direction of a camera that better suites your needs. Otherwise, I think this camera is excellent. It has a small and sleek design. Overall I believe that Nikon cameras have the best lenses. Their pictures are always crisp and clear, and I have owned several digicams.

I am not impresssed with s9 pl. go for s6
- 3.0 out of 5
am still not sure. I am a photosnapper who does not need a lot of frills. I do think that the screen resolution is too grainy and it is a pretty slow camera. I like the sleek design but without an SD card it has basically NO memory. Also, it claims that you must use the PictureProject software with your computer, but I cant get it to work quite right. Wish the menus were a little more involved and I hope picture quality is better than what I am seeing on the screen. Will return to Circuit City if it doesnt work out - also, buy this online it will be cheaper.
