Olympus C-765 Ultra Zoom

Editor's Review

The Olympus C-765 Ultra Zoom packs extended zoom capability into a compact and streamlined body. Like its predecessor, the Olympus C-750, the C-765 offers a 10x optical zoom and a wide range of auto and manual controls. But what really makes the Olympus C-765 remarkable is its compact size -- as of February, 2004, Olympus claims that the C-765 is the smallest 10x optical zoom camera available! The C-765 should be available in May, 2004, for approximately $499.

My first digital purchase (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I have a Cannon 35mm with an awesome zoom lens; however, it's big and bulky to carry around. I shopped around before buying and am very pleased with my 765. The 10x zoom was a great selling point and my pictures are just as beautiful as the ones taken with my Cannon. I should have gone "digital" years ago!

Some good some bad (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Don't be fooled by this camera's flashy appearance at first. Although it takes average pictures at an affordable price, it doesn't live up to its claims in low light. Overall a great camera, but their are some faults. What it lacks in low light it makes up for with its amazing 10x optical zoom. 4 megapixels is more than enough, and it is extremely easy to use. The manual buttons are convinient and efficient. I got it for 260$ which is great for a camera better than most olympus cameras which cost over $100 more most of the time. I love it.

Incredible for most pictures (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This is the perfect camera for people who want phenomenal pictures in most situations. It's low-light performance sometimes leaves something to be desired, but I have taken pro-grade pictures of many types of subjects in virtually every condition. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I took mine back (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I bought this camera for the 10x zoom feature. I'm going to Alaska and I wanted to be able to get great shots of things far away. When I experimented with the camera after buying it, I discovered that the camera was very sensitive to any movement at all. Even in sports mode the pictures would blur if you zoomed past 4x. The night conditions for the camera was iffy. If you could manage to not breath while taking the picture it would come out alright. However, I found it frustrating that the picture itself was fuzzy on the LCD screen when focusing to take the actual shot. I like to be able to see what I'm taking a picture of before I hit the button. The camera did focus the object 50% of the time, but it took a long time.

For a first time digital camera user I would not suggest this camera unless you've had significant experience. I'm sure it's a great Intermediate digital camera, but I didn't want to have to carry a tripod with me everywhere I went just to get clear pictures.

Poor focus at a distance (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This camera is good on short range. It has a problem focusing at a distance, e.g. in a field or picking up smaller objects like birds even with the spot focus.
It is very poor indoors as the shutter speed is slow when using flash. Flash pics are under exposed beyond about 15 feet.

This camera amazes me every time I use it (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I own a Canon EOS10D and recently bought this C765 as a camera I could carry around in my pocket, I must say I am astounded by the photographic capabilities of this little camera and in many cases the resulting photos are comparable to my Canon, A truly excellent investment.

I'm very impressed... (anonymous — 07/18/2006)
I wanted something more than a point and shoot camera, but I'm not ready to spend the money for a digital SLR. For under $400, this camera has exceeded my expectations. The optical zoom is terrific. On the third day I had it, I took it to a NFL game and I have a ton of excellent, close-up action shots from my seat in the second to last row up in the Edward Jones Dome (with some help from the digital zoom). I would recommend it to anyone.
