Olympus C-770 Ultra Zoom
Editor's Review
Like other Olympus Ultra Zoom models, the Olympus C-770 packs a powerful 10x optical zoom into a relatively compact body. Unlike previous Olympus Ultra Zoom models, however, the C-770 can record short videos in high quality MPEG4 format, making the C-770 the first Olympus camera to blur the line between camera and camcorder. With 4-megapixel resolution and a wide variety of automatic and manual controls, the C-770 is a great choice for amateur and advanced photographers alike.

Olympus C-770 Ultra Zoom Comments & Questions (write your own!)
Well done, Rob. I was just being playful.
OF the two, I have to give edge to the Olympus SP-510 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... ) because of it's 7.1MP resolution. However, if RAW support is your thing (uncompressed photos), then the edge goes to the SP-500UZ ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... ).

It took alot of practice time to figure out how to use the camera, but once I learned the tricks it works great. I've taken pictures in very low light indoors and outdoors and had good success. The trick is to set everything, push the button down halfway, wait a few seconds for thre camera to focus, then press the button the rest of way. With some practice you can even take stop action pictures with out blurring.

Do NOT buy this camera (or its successors) if you want to use the camera in low light or with flash. IT DOES NOT WORK. Olypus charged me almost half the price of the camera to "repair" it and it is still the same. This is absolutely a design fault. Its a piece of crap.

This camera has a major problem with outdoor flash at night. The delay between shutter press and flash means anything like a flying squirrel sitting on a tree at 10' will be missed 25/25 shots. Every setting the same thing. Okay for indoor stills and general daylight work.

I liked my 770 uz until I discovered by accident that by using an Olympus M XD memory card while in video mode with sound ,that my camera would seize up and not open again. Unfortunately the service from Olympus has been very poor and very very costly as I am 1 month outside warranty. For this reason my next camera for myself and my camera club friends will not be Olympus.Servicing your mistakes is good business.

I like to play with photos, my wife wants PHD (Push Here Dummy). The C-770 does both with excellence. The 10X Optical Zoom is great for the far away shots and the Panorama feature is wonderful. It does an excellent job of up close and personal as well. I have owned the camera for four months now and not been disappointed. My wife likes the camera, now that she figured out to get the zoom to work.

When I decided to get a digital camera, I spend many hours reviewing the available features of a wide range of cameras by Nikon, Canon, Sony and Olympus. Some features are mutually exclusive. For example, if you want a camera the size of a deck of cards, you won't be able to get a 10X optical zoom. The Olympus 4.0 megapixel cameras kept coming out with the best set of features for the money, but the C-770 offered MPEG-4 video capabilities that were not available in the C-765 and similar models, so I got it. I have not been disappointed. I upgraded the memory to a 256MB card, which is good for about 250 photos at the highest JPG resolution. The battery lasts through about 200 pictures. So many options, with a manual focus that is easy to access and use for those shots where the auto-focus gets confused. Four megapixels is a sort-of "sweet spot" for picture taking. I can print an 8x10 photo without any fuzziness, but each photo is under 1 MB of storage. Pictures through windows (e.g., my car windshield) come out looking great. One of the preset modes that I use frequently is for fast action with a 1/1000 shutter speed. I could go on and on about how much I like this camera. Although it is a bit too big to slip into a shirt pocket, it fits fine in my jacket pocket, or into the belt pack I wear while walking.
