Olympus FE-340 Comments & Questions (write your own!)
Thanks for the info.
Yes, i'm using the Supplied Olympus Battery and i have fully chanrged it as well!
I've just re-inserted the Battery after another 12+ hours and it doesn't flash at all now.
Can the Flash/Sensor be replaced by opening the back up? (Not averse to a bit of DIY trickery)
Is anyone else having this problem? I've looked on the Olympus wed site, and I don't see a camera firmware update.
Should I return the camera as defective?
You probably bought xD cards made by other manufacturers.
There should be nothing wrong with the camera.
From the Olympus Manual: "Compatible Cards - xD-Picture Card (16MB - 2GB) (Type H/M, Standard)"
However, for Panorama, only cards purchased from Olympus works, although Fiji, Sandisk, Lexar also produce xD cards.
If the card does not work, as stated in the <a href="olympus.co.uk/consumer/imag... Olympus camera - card compatibility chart </a>, then the card should be returned for a new one.
Given, I can't find any Non-Type M+ 2Gb Olympus brand memory cards locally.... Olympus should issue a "firmware" update for the camera to fix this problem. While, Panorama picture capability wasn't my primary reason for purchasing the camera. I was looking forward to doing so when on vacation this summer. I just bought a two pack of Olympus Brand 2Gb cards before I discovered this problem from Office Max on sale for less than $30... and I'd bet at this point neither of them will work for Panorama pictures in the camera.
I'm starting to think that returning the camera/memory as defective is just what it'll take to get Olympus to do something about this.
However, if the 2 gb card does everything except panorama, ........ there is more reason to show it to Olympus.
Perhaps I should not elaborate on my suspicion because I have not seen the card personally, but I am sure after close examination, Olympus can tell you more.
But don't let this prevent you from shooting pans on your trip. Just take a bunch of pictures overlapping the edges and then stitch them together using Adobe Photoshop Elements Photomerge feature.
When I get a chance, I'll see what the Memory Card signatures are... and try one of the other Olympus brand 2Gb memory cards I have to see what its signature is. That might give some more clues about what is going on.
The other new Olympus Brand 2G M+ card, when I put it back in generated an error... and asked me if I wanted to "erase/Format" the card... Instead of doing that. I took it out, and used a pencil eraser to clean the contacts. When I re-inserted the card. Panorama mode worked, and I was able to take Panorama pictures with it.
So, if the card has a problem again... I plan to take it back to the store and exchange it for a different card.

But first, you could try resetting the camera. But I'm sure you've already been down that road.
"sweet lady in an off mood." Nice prose!
I assume you've made sure your lense is clean and free of spots.
Here is the Olympus Service & Repair URL: olympusamerica.com/cpg_sect...
If it still appears, you should probably send it to Olympus for a warranty repair.
From Custom Print
steps :
a. set print mode
b. set print paper
c. select picture to print
select " more "
d. under more
select " number of prints "
under date :
select " with "
e. select " print "
If the steps are correct, it should print the date, otherwise I would expect something else is wrong and you have to use a third party " time stamp software " such as <a href="freedownloadscenter.com/Mul... MagiTime </a> to print the date on the pictures.
If your camera is out of warranty, or if Olympus refuses to repair it for free, the one thing you can try is to If you gently, and I do mean GENTLY push against the lens with the PALM of your hand as you turn it on, it may cause it to depress back into the camera. If that doesn't work, and you can't reset it or turn it on/off several times, then you may have to send it in for a repair estimate anyway.
Another option is that it may just have some condensation inside it. You could try putting it in a ziplock with about a cup of uncooked rice. The rice quickly sucks up the surrounding moisture. Make sure the environment is free from excess humidity, drop the camera in a container of rice and let it sit. For a better desiccant, it'd be a good idea to store all those little silica gel packets that come in anything from shoe boxes to moisture-sensitive gadgets.
How did you make out Rachel?

Great work sir. I used my thumb just as he said, wouldnt let the lens extend for a moment, then it popped on! Thank you so much!

Picture quality is pretty good on the FE line, with above average colors and sharpness. As for blur, that depends on your steady hand. It does have Digital Image Stabilization, but make no mistake, DIS is a software manipulation of the image and not as good as an optical IS.
I have just bought the new Sony W150 (8mil pix)and it produces rubbish photos indoors, not even fit for a 4 x 6 print. other user reviews of recent Sonys seem to be the same.
I am fed up reading reviews of all the latest gimmicks like smile and face detection ( I know a face when I see one) and never a mention on whether the flash can take good photos indoors. Occasionly the reviewer will add almost as an afterthought. "some noise above ISO200". I am no expert but that implies to me, grainy pictures with flash and ISO 400.
I think you can do better, however, like the Canon SX100 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... ). The optical IS alone is worthy of consideration. But here's the thing, as you get farther away from the "sweet spot" of 6 megapixels, the more MP that's stuff inside a tiny CCD chip, the more noise and blur is invited to the party.
Steve also gave his opinion of the camera as well as to suggest an alternative, if you would top up another $50.
As regards the question whether FE340 is the best camera, one would find that what is the best today probably will be outdated in a few months.
However, there is such a thing as " most popular camera " or " best selling camera " which you can find in many sites if you Google for it.
Otherwise you can click, on this page, the Digital camera-HQ's list of " the most popular point and shoot " or " Best Pocket Cameras " for assistance.
I don't understand how you could charge the camera via the USB, Mine came with a charger for the included battery. I have not seen anything that said the camera would charge via the USB. However, the camera does display a menu on the back of the camera when you plug it into your computer. Check the other options and see what they do. On mine I just select the PC option and have the camera look like a disk drive to the computer, then I can "click&drag" the images off the camera, or just delete the reject pictures.

Being newly introduced on 22 Jan 08, the Olympus FE-340 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... ) does not have a lot of quality reports on it as of yet. It does not have the weatherproof feature of the Olympus Stylus 1200 though.

Best little camera I ever owned. So thin and small you can carry it with you very easily. For me, the secret to taking interesting photographs is not OWNING a great camera, it is CARRYING a good camera wherever you go ! This one allows me to do that easily. If you are looking for an inexpensive, easy to use camera, you won't go wrong with this one.

I found that this was the best camera for my money at the time. It has shot some amazing pictures! Grand Canyon i.e. also its macros is great! But it has slowly been falling apart. the front bar fell off, the microphone no longer works, and the quality of my pics has become less over time. Note DO NOT BUY THE BEST BU
Y WARRANTY ITS A SCAM! They say they will replace your camera if broken but they don't they send it off for six weeks. Send it back still broken and they steal your battery!
