Olympus FE-180 Reviews by Digital Camera-HQ Users

a very nice compact digital camera (dirk-jan boon — 04/20/2008)

The olympus Fe-180 is is stylish digital campact camera that has a resolution of 6Mega pixel and uses 2 penlighs batteries or NIMH (AA SIZE) for Power. The advantage of penlights is that the can be bought on practicaly every spot on the earth so there is almost everywhere a possibilty to buy power if the penlights (NIMH that came with the camera, are draint and need a recharge).

It is also a very simple to use digital camera , there is a simple but sufficient set up menu and a second menu for more frequently used shooting tips and quick settings.

What i love is the size and weight of the camera and the Digital Image Stabelizer (DIS) it helps to get a clear and blur free image at full zoomed out position and also in normal positions when your hands shake a bit.

The FE-180 has a relative short start up time and the switch to playback and shoot is just two buttons above the screen.
The camera also has a built in memory so you can even shoot a few pictures with out using a XD memory card.

On the internet some people say it has problems with regonizing and working with a large XD card of 2 GB (Gigabyte) now mine model does not have this limitation , my advise is go to a good camera dealer and test it out there .. if the camera does not reognize it you'll see it because you see a warning on the screen and a low (internal memory ) shot size or even nothing .

If you want to be shure buy a few 1 GB XD the difference in euro between 1GB and 2GB is about 20 euro. Olympus is a well known camera brand and the battery time is high (when a 2000 NIMH penlight accu's are used aproximately up to 500 shots on one charge)

The lens is a all glas lens that has a F 3.1 / F 5.6 Apature meaning that in normal till cloudy days the light efficiency is good till acceptable , it also hase a scene mode (sport mode and other handy modes) and it has a jog dial with auto, dsp mode (shaking hand) , movie , landscape and night modes.

The DIS (see above) functions not only on moving objects but also on rock steady things like buildings and people stading still, the camera uses a high iso combined with a fast shutter speed making it possible to get a blur-free and stable picture.

the shutterlag is acceptable 0.6 seconds for me at least it is , my advice is try it out , tha cemera lies good in your hands and there is a mini grip to holfd it , but it can be used on a tripod to .

There are a few minus points , one is that it has no occulair to view through.. instead there is live view what you see is what you get. The other disadvantage may be is that you cannot set it to a pre set iso (asa) , the fe-180 selects this for you

final notes : can i recommend it ? Yes i can ! Is 6 MP enough ? Yes it is enough infact i prefer real pixels above interpolated pixels ! For whom is this FE-180 a camera? For every body that wantsa good piont and shoot camera with some (not to many) great features (like DIS) . The picture quality is very sharp and good enough to make a large print of it.

FE 180 review (Paritosh — 11/27/2007)

Amateurs planning to buy FE 180 should go for it without any hesitation. Its excellent pic qualilty is supplanted with equally good white balancing (all done by image processor within the camera). Lack of manual control/s actually works in the favour of amateur users (like me, when I began using point and shoot digital cameras).

Not a quick shot (Desiree — 04/28/2007)

I'm disappointed in the speed with which it takes pictures. And it is unreasonably slow at loading them for review on the lcd. I got this camera as a gift, so I can't return it. But I would shop around before buying this one if I were you.

Olympus FE180 (Sandeep — 04/12/2007)

Night shooting is very big problem with this camera. It doesnt have the regular view-finder. Red-eye reduction is not that good.
I wud say, I'm not a happy customer.

So far , So Good ! (Amir — 03/24/2007)

Advantages :
1 - 6.0 MP with lower price .
2 - Using Rechargable AA batteries , also works with any type of AA alkaline batteries .
3 - Package comes with Standard charger , and 2 AA (long life rechargable) batteries .
4 - Low Power using then u can take about 200 - 250 shots per charging .
5 - Very Easy to use and operate .

Disadvantages :
1 - Using XD memory cards , more Cost (1.5X of SD cards with the same capacity) and hardest to find in markets .
2 - Panorama function only works if u use the XD memory cards manufactered by OLYMPUS , if u use any type of other XD cards , the abilty of taking Panorama shots will be disabled .
3 - this camera suffered from lacks of Menu and Manual settings , non of the SHUTTER SPEED , ISO SPEED , and even MANUAL FOCUS are availabe . all of them will automatically set when you select the scenes for shoting (for example : night shoting , fireworks , landscape and etc .)
4 - using the Digital zoom will come with a highly noised shot , so u forced to only use the 3X optical zoom .
5 - Flash depth is about 3.5 m (max) so u can't take obvious shots at night .
6 - only 22Mb internal memory .

Out of focus (Joe Layne — 01/08/2007)

No setting on the camera could fix this, nearly every photo was blurry. Got this camera after my old Canon started acting up "after four years". RETURNED and got a new Canon A-540, very happy now.

A Gift (dewayne — 01/06/2007)

Bought this a replacement for a Kodak EasyShare for my daughter....great features for the beginner and high school age kid. Price was reasonable too. Would like to have more carrying case options though.

It's cool (Anand — 01/03/2007)

Hi all,
FE-180 is awesome when we are talking snaps in day time. If we are going for Night mood it's not giving a good result. :-(

Horrible Buy (Bonnie — 12/26/2006)

I had the camera about two weeks and the screen went bust right in the beginning of my deployment overseas. Now I have now way of fixing it in time to record my deployment.

FE 180 (Bob — 10/31/2006)

Great for the point and shoot user. The auto dial mode is excellent , but the the night mode is difficult to use,I seem to get an out of focus picture blurring in the night mode.
I would recommend this camera for the everyday point and shoot user .
