Hey! You should know that Olympus has released a newer version of this product: the Olympus TG-310.
Olympus TOUGH 3000
Editor's Review
The TOUGH 3000 is the latest "ruggedized" camera from Olympus. In the slew of cameras released for outdoorsy types last year, we thought that the TOUGH 8000 was probably the best of the bunch, so we expected good things from this newest iteration. With such a low price tag the 3000 is a good buy if you need rugged, but it looks like image quality and usability suffer.

For people who travel. Not photograph. (namenamename — 02/19/2011)
Bad for macro. Quite noisy. Good for scenery and all that weather-related stuff though.

For a hick like me, the camera takes good pictures, but the software would keep kicking my out when I'd try to download my pictures. When I'd finally get in, I'd have to delete the duplicate downloads in the album. I just downloaded the ib software update today, and had no problems like before, but now 75% of all the words (functions, titles, etc.) have a 45 degree negative slant, making those words unreadable. Now I can't even read the edit functions. Tried shutting everything down and restarting, but no luck. Any ideas out there?

Not personally familiar with the Olympus software so I can't find a fix for that problem, but you might be happier switching to different software. Google Picasa 3 is free, easy to use (integrates perfectly fine with any camera), organizes well and makes online sharing easy. And if you ever need to adjust colors or anything, makes that easy too.

Safe? Not sure I get your question. They're certainly rugged enough.
