Panasonic Lumix FH1
Panasonic Lumix FH1

Hey! You should know that Panasonic has released a newer version of this product: the Panasonic Lumix FH2.
Panasonic Lumix FH1
Editor's Review
The FH1 is the stripped-down version of the FH20, which we consider the best sub-$200 camera released in 2010. The FH1 features a 12.1 megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom, 720p HD video, and the Venus Engine IV image processor. Nothing head-turning, but like the FH20, it just feels right: well-built and responsive, with image quality a touch above the similarly priced competition.
Specifications
- 12.1 megapixels
- 5x optical zoom
- 28mm wide-angle lens
- 2.7-inch LCD display
- 720p HD video
- Venus Engine IV image processor
- Captures to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards
- Lithium ion battery
- Release Date: Feb 28, 2010

Flaw - will accidently snap pics . . . (Balthus — 02/10/2011)
One major flaw of the FH20, it kept snapping pics
automatically when I stuffed it down my pants.
Fortunately, it has a great macro feature. ;)

Work with iMovie (Mary — 02/05/2011)
question is will the videos download to iMovie?

Yes. It captures in QuickTime, MJPEG so you should have no trouble. However, be advised that digital still cameras and other types of tapeless video devices—including some video phones and other hybrid devices—often import their video clips into iPhoto. Some compatible video clips stored in the iPhoto library can be accessed directly from the iMovie Event Library. For more information on importing these files, see this link - docs.info.apple.com/article... here's what I would recommend - get a USB card reader and plug it in. It'll then be a drag and drop and you can import the video file directly. No muss, no fuss.

FH-1 Problem? (Jessica — 01/28/2011)
We ordered the FH-1 based on good reviews. We didn't think we needed 14.1 MP or 8x zoom otherwise we would have gotten the FH-20. All out other camera accesories (DSLR and HD video are Canon) so I was leaning towards canon. I like the Panasonic so far and the price was right (camera plus 4GB card for 95 bucks) but when I turn it on the lens can go in and out several times before being ready to shoot. I also notice this when it is time to turn off it goes in and out a few times before it closes...is this a defect or normaL? I've had it for 7-10 days and am trying everything out!

It will go out slightly as it's doing it run up. It may be on active focus which causes it to focus like a camcorder. You can problem change that in the menu settings.

Please help! I need a compact camera thats water proof that i can get for $250 or under. I would also like it to have good zoom. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Well, waterproof cameras don't have good zoom lenses. They have to have internal lenses so that the water doesn't get in, and internal lenses physically can't extend far enough to actually zoom effectively. The best you can do for $250 is the Canon D10, with a 3x lens.

Panasonic vs. Canon (Chris42163 — 12/20/2010)
I don't understand why this camera is 2nd to the canon A1300, if the only difference between this camera and its bigger brothers is that it has a 5x Optical zoom instead of an 8 or 12. The Canon only has a 4x optical zoom. I think I'm going to try the panasonic for the first time because I like that the movies are in HD. With the same image processor, I just don't see what causes the Panasonics to come out on top in the higher dollar cameras, and the canon to come out on top in the lower dollar cameras.

Go with whatever it says in the manual -- a good rule of thumb is to charge it completely (probably about six hours), drain it completely, and then repeat.

Im looking for a camera to take landscape/nature shots. But I'm putting it on my christmas list for "Santa" aka my parents. I don't want it to be over $150. I just want a standard digital with no lens changing. I know nothing about cameras so something easy to work with. My dad does know about cameras and has his own but for sport shots. I'm looking at: Panasonic Lumix FH1, and the Olympus TOUGH 3000. I would like waterproof/resistant and generally really tough b/c I drop things a lot. It doesn't have to be super tough, but that would be ideal. If you have other suggestions that would be great!
Thanks, Amanda

Olympus selling point is it takes a licking and keeps on ticking. Not that it has stunning images. They're nominal, but you can do better. I'd go with the Panasonic.

No. That's a feature that point and shoots don't have ... or DSLRs for that matter.

Lumix FH1 is ok, but it's nothing spectacular. (CadenceSF — 10/24/2010)
If you're used to shooting descent DSLR(D700), then it's picture quality, and ISO speed vs noise is disappointing, I wouldn't go above ISO 400. The lack of user guide is weird too. For $123, it serves as a good snapshot companion. For more $$ there's Canon's S90... an awesome point and shoot for low light shoots.

I can get the FH20 w/ a 2GB card and case for $163 or I can get a FH1 for $112. Is the extra $50 worth it over the FH1? I have a 1GB card and they're cheaper these days. Any opinions? Thanks.

If you don't need the 8x zoom of the FH20, then the FH1 could be the better choice. The recommendations on this website are purely current cameras, the FH1 has since been replaced by the more expensive FH3. If you can find the FH1 then go for it.
