A 10.1-megapixel compact with an impressive tech package, the Panasonic Lumix FX500 is sure to please gadget enthusiasts in need of a solid snapshooter. The FX500's biggest draws are its 25mm wide angle 5x zoom lens and its hybrid control, which features a combination of touch screen and joystick functionality. Also included is Panasonic's now standard Intelligent Auto mode, which takes control of several functions to analyze a scene and render the best exposure possible, all on the fly. For budding videographers, it offers 720p HD output.

If video is your focus, I'd go with the Kodak Zi8. This is largely because you can add an external microphone and improve the audio experience. But if you want that still image as it's focus, then just about any point and shoot will do, and some do shoot in HD. Panasonic makes a great camera as does the Canon Ixus/SD line. What's your budget?

The thing about low light performance is that the more MP a camera has, it can actually be LESS sensitive to light, not more. That translates to more noise being in the picture, especially in low light situations. The way around that is to make the chip larger. The Canon A2100's CCD is a DIGIC IV and it's a tad larger, giving it better low light performance since it's 12MP isn't so "stuffed."

I'm saying Panasonic. While Samsung makes pretty darn good LCDs and Plasmas, Panasonic has the edge in the camera department if you don't factor in first tier cameras like Nikon, Canon and Olympus.

I have been waiting for this camera to decide which to buy. I want a wide angle, compact camera that is a good all around camera and easy to use.

Both are very comparable in picture quality, but I give the edge to the S600 for sharpness and a better macro.
