Editor's Review

The super small Pentax Optio M30 is only 18mm thick, with a sleek aluminum body that is a pleasure to handle. The M30 features an 'auto-picture' mode that tries to automatically ascertain the right camera settings for whatever environment you are in, allowing the photographer to not worry about a myriad of confusing adjustments. It also has face-recognition focus and exposure, which keeps your subject's faces clear and crisp, all by itself.

Great Little Camera (Joseph — 06/21/2009)

I own two cameras: an Olympus, which takes beautiful photos but is cumbersome to carry around (I bought it for the large zoom lens on purpose), and the Pentax Optio M30, which I bought to have a knockabout camera I could just keep in my pocket for everyday use. This camera has surpassed all my expecations. It takes excellent photos generally, but what's even better is the ability to capture video. So okay, the video's not broadcast-quality, but it's way better than what you might get with a cell phone. And with two little kids, I find myself using this camera constantly. (Just checked: typically 150-300 photos and 15-50 videos per month! The camera has performed perfectly the entire time.) I have never had any issues with the batteries. Once in a great while the auto-exposure software will make a choice that results in a poor shot, but you can always override that and take it over. Also love the macro and super macro lenses. Overall a great little camera and I would recommend it to anyone.

Don't bother, unreliable and poor image quality. (amy — 12/24/2008)

I bought this in Feb 07 just before moving overseas as I wanted a small point & shoot for taking snapshots. However, I've been very dissapointed with the camera. On more than one occasion it's stopped working for no apparent reason (lense alignment issues?) where it just opens/shuts the lense & turns itself off—this happened once while vacationing in Venice (not the time you want your camera to act up!) Also, it's extremely hard to get decent photos with this camera, they're always fuzzy and out of focus, even in bright daylight. The flash is too bright & washes everything out. I have an old 3.2 megapixel camera that takes much better pictures, which I've had to revert back to as this one may have died for the last time. Can't get it to stay on, even with fully charged battery, and don't consider it worth the money to send it in for repair.

Poor quality images (James & Laurie — 07/23/2008)

Our old camera is a 3.2 MP Nikon that still takes crisper, cleaner pictures than this 7.1 MP Pentax. Even outside in bright sunlight the images are a little fuzzy and pixelated. And, even thought this camera has a higher ISO than others in it's class, indoor images are horrible and unusable. Again our old 3.2 Nikon does better. Putting this camera on Craigslist and buying something else.

Stopped Working After 14 Months (Curtis Hume — 05/31/2008)

The camera stopped working after 14 months - wouldn't power on. I sent it in to Pentax for repairs. Of course the 12 month had expired. They quoted me $89.90 to replace "printed circuit boards and/or image sensor". I think I paid $140 for the camera and you can now get it for under $120. I'd be better off putting the $90 towards a Nikon....

SUPER USER-FRIENDLY!!! (archiebal arizo — 08/27/2007)

I am not really that techy but this cam is absolutely amazing-portable, durable, sophisticated and user-friendly. The zoom botton is perfect unlike other brands. Has a wider LCD screen with a very quality lense meticulously designed. I highly recommend this product. The price is not bad.

Pentax M30 Excellent!!! (Gary & Tatiana — 08/20/2007)

We purchased this camera to take on our Honeymoon, my wife has a 10. MP other brand camera which was 200.00 more than this. I paid under 170 for this camera and it taks better pictures at 7.1 MP than her 10MP Camera.
Especially close ups!
We took many pictures for our jeweler to show him how great the rings looked....The 7.1 took INCREDIBLE close fine detail even to the sparkle of her 2 carat diamond without any blurs at all!
I highly recommend this camera for beats all!

Excellent Camera for under $120 (Steve Kaplan — 07/27/2007)

I'm quite happy with this camera after doing quite a few head-to-heads with other point and shoot and SLR cameras too. Given the features, stabilization, reasonable sized viewing screen, and abundance of features, this is a very nice camera.

Outside shots are bad (Marion Icke — 07/07/2007)

When it is sunny outside you cannot see the subject on the screen. It is very difficult to know what you are photographing. Limits it's use.

No viewfinder (Beth — 06/08/2007)

Takes great pictures, but when traveling and trying to take outdoor scenic shots it is impossible to see to frame the shot. Changing settings on the LED screen made little difference in sunlight. I will be returning this camera.
