When I push the button to focus on the subject it tries to focus then flashes red in screen and does not focus. Any suggestions on fixing this problem?

Make sure you aren't in Macro mode, which would limit the focusing range and prevent the camera from focusing correctly.

I had a problem with my camera,

the screen viewer looks clear before the picture, but after the picture is taken the viewer displays a very lined and grainy photo. When copied to the computer the lines and grains are copied. The camera was working fine for about a year.

The LCD screen is usually a pretty poor preview of what the final image will be. It's an approximation rather than an exact replica. The grain you're seeing could be just that the camera is set on a high ISO, which may not be as easily seen on the LCD before the shot is taken. If this is a sudden problem, however, and not related to ISO, then the camera is probably on its way out.

I don't know what's wrong with my new camera. I attempted to turn it on and it makes a "jammed" sound when the lens comes out then it goes back in? (Dani87 — 12/31/2008)

After the lens goes back in it makes the chime sound that it was suppose to make upon turning the camera on... Is it broken? I thought it might have been the battery, so I recharged it but same problem? It (the battery) is inserted correctly.

First, it could just be your battery is just low and low battery capacity can cause this. But the "jammed sound" makes me wonder if the lens has become knocked out of adjustment. Did you drop it or bang it? Try turning the camera on/off several times to see if the lens works it's way back into alignment. But DO. NOT. FORCE. IT. If the problem persists, you'll need to send it in for repair.

Try resetting your camera. This is a fairly easy procedure which involves either going into your setup menu and choosing "reset" (or intialize), holding down the menu key for a few seconds, or, removing the batteries for a few minutes (YMMV). It may be that the firmware loading got corrupted and the camera just needs to be "rebooted," which is something that turning it on/off won't accomplish. But after which, you should have the camera reset to factory default settings.

Another tip is to go to the Pentax website and look for firmware updates. Download and install them.

best video capabilities for digital point and shoot (pggirl — 10/05/2008)

i am looking for a digital point and shoot camera under $200 that takes pictures in very sunny conditions and low light situations and has good video quality & image stablization. size is not important.

i am considering the following cameras:

canon power shot sd1100

canon power shot a1000

nikon coolpix L18

fuji finepix z20fd

any advice on how these models compare? any other models i should consider?

Try taking a look at the new Canon G10 for the best video quality. Out of the cameras you listed either the SD1100 or the Finepix z20fd have the best quality, in my opinion. The SD1100 does a better job with colors, while the z20fd takes sharper and clearer video.

To be honest, there isn't one that has "good video quality." Average, sure. But at best you'll get quality just above VHS (although some cameras, like the Kodak Z1085IS shoot 720p HD). And even if there's quality that rivals camcorders, the audio will be severely lacking because the mics simply aren't that great.

The camera should have come with a USB cable. Simply hook this up to camera and your PC and use whatever picture-management program you have, to transfer the pcitures. If you don't have one, download the free "Picasa", which I found works well for all applications.

At it's simplest, you could use your "Windows Explorer" to move, copy or drag the pictures from the camara to your PC.

If you don't have the cable, you should be able to find one in a computer store. Bring your camera along, to ensure that the connector fits.

I was able once on a European vacation to get a camera shop to sell me the cable (forgot at home) out of a new box, which they then replaced by re-ordering.

it should have a usb cable just connect ure camera to the computer and then open my computer it says pentax optio or something then open that open the file dcim and then look at the last file it shows u the lates pictures taken open that and then copy and paste the pictures whereever u want done! but b4 u take out the camera from the pc simplypress the safely remove hardware and then u have them wherever u saved them =] u can do this as much as u like =]

Yes, you can replace the battery of buy a spare. The battery model number is D-LI78. Make sure you buy an authentic and reputable battery when purchasing one. You can get them straight from Pentax, or at a retail store like Best Buy.

Unacceptably poor value for money (Bob Draper — 04/05/2009)

After just three and a bit weeks this camera died on me. Not being one to mistreat photographic equipment I find this serious failure, compounded by the retailers outright refusal to replace or refund, to be an exceedingly poor example and en entirely regretable experience all round. The camera performed well while it was still functional but such total failure within such a short time is unforgiveable.

I just received this as a gift and after many months of searching for one, this is perfect. It has so many features for auto shooting so that no matter the situation, there is a perfect setting. The rechargeable battery was a must because it has a charger that will last forever. Very simple to use and carry everywhere.

I was looking for a camera that was simple yes VERY easy to use and yet would take films and do all sorts of other stuff- never thought it exisited until I went on a cruise and purchased this camerea on the ship- My husband and I are thrilled with it -It truly is SOOOOOOOOOO easy and made our trip even better- it is small and packed with features that the prompts are no brainers---also takes video with the same ease as taking a picture- we are over the moon regarding this camera!!!!

bought to use landscape and closeup photography,downloaded to find pictures not sharp at all ,movie selection came out clear enough but had purple tint and lines..one feature that worked well allthough not a sharp enough image was the panoramic feature ,very easy camera to use but unfortunatly ruined my holiday pics,,took back,exchanged on recomendation for fuji f 480,let you know how it goes...fingers crossed.....
