Pentax Optio S4

Editor's Review

The Pentax Optio S4 offers a compelling combination of ultra compact styling and 4-megapixel resolution. Like its predecessor, the popular Pentax Optio S, the Optio S4 is small enough to fit inside an Altoids tin -- which is exactly what many owners use as a camera case. Despite its small size, the Optio S4 offers 4-megapixel resolution and a 3x optical zoom, making it just as capable as cameras many times it size.

  • 4.0 megapixels (effective)

Good camera (ClaireIsabelle — 11/14/2007)

great camera. It's been 3 -4 yearrs since I've had it and still don't feel the need to change it. I tried a camera last year that had more megapixels, and the image quality was so bad, I went back to my trusty pentax. the only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because I do see slimmer cameras now. so has nothing to do with performance. Love it!

Not so good after all (Charles — 12/07/2006)

I'm really desappointed by that camera; it has a good advantage: it is small, it can fit in your pocket and you can take it anywhere, but the big disadvantage is that it is definitely too small at the time to take pictures, the screen gives you a wrong idea of the final picture.
The battery is also a problem, it doesn't last long most of all if you use the flash. It is also too slow to start and if there is a picture on the go to be taken, well it is gone before the camera starts. It doesn't like 2GB SD cards. It cannot format it and it takes actually then 20 seconds to turn on. So in the end, don't buy it

Steady Performer (DParker — 10/06/2006)

I'm very happy with my S4, particularly given that I've been using it for three years - nearly an eternity for digital cameras these days. It produces consistently good shots, is easy to use, and is small enough to carry unobtrusively in a pocket. The only downside I can think of is that the metal surface shows scratches/marks easily - gives it a beat-up appearance. But that doesn't affect its performance.
I've had no problems with it.

Gets old quick (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Took great photos for such a small camera, but lens got hazy, focus inconsistent, and a noticeable drop in image quality after one year. Boy I miss film cameras that lasted decades.

As for the software, don't bother. Just get a USB SD card reader and bounce the images with that.

Survived a long time (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I've had this camera for 2 years, and just now is it wearing down.It takes good pictures and is very small. It is a bit fragile but overall for 200 bucks its pretty good

I love this camera! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I bought this camera just before a big trip to CA and was thrilled with the quality pictures it took. Everyone is amazed at how small it is and how much it can do. I carry everywhere! I would totally recommend it!

Great Camera but..... (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I loved this camera for its size and it does take decent shots. I take it with me everywhere and it was my trusty little camera until the lens locked on me. I've tried to install the software from the Pentax site to fix this problem but to no avail. I treat the camera really well so it has nothing to do with the way I handle it. I would've given it five stars if it wasn't for this problem. I will be in contact with pentax.

Nice, but lock-up reliability problem (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Still camera pics very good under most situations...suffers slightly under lower light levels (grainy). Nice features, very compact. Quick power-up. LCD screen too tiny, though. Flash good for a subcompact. Video camera is useful only for sending clips over the internet...not even close to a replacement for a real video camera. The BIG problem is reliability. Camera began locking up in camera mode after only 15 months...lens, focus, "take-picture" button, etc...serious processor issues is my guess. Fortunately I bought the 5-year extended warranty. Otherwise the repair cost on this $260 camera would be $175! I would never buy a Pentax compact again. My wish list: Canon SD400 or SD450.

Depleted Battery message (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This is my second S40. The first one, I couldn't get the date and time to come out on my pictures. It was replaced and now I keep getting a "depleted battery" message and the camera shuts down. I'm using brand new batteries. The Pentax website was not much help with no comments section. Anybody know what's happening.

Lens lock-up (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Great portability and user friendly, but heck from my research and personal experience, lens lock-up is a very common problem with these cameras. The firmware available off the Pentax sites do not work on my camera.

Faulty Lens (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I only used this camera for no more than a total of 20hrs, the bulk within the last few days. Today, the battery went dead & the lens did not retract all the way. After recharging the battery the camera powered on for only 2 seconds & shut off. What a disappointment for minimal use. I am in the process of dealing with customer service...I hope their service is better than their product!!

Faulty Lens (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Loved this camera to begin with as everyone seems to as well. BUT for the 10 months I have owned this camera it has only worked for 7 and a half due to the lens not retracting and me having to send it back to Pentax on more than one occasion.
If you want a camera that works when you need it to I would suggest looking at other options.

Perfect match of size and quality (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I have been thrilled with my Pentax S4, despite some shortcomings. What are the negatives? Buttons are small and sometimes hard to press correctly. Metal surface shows scratches easily. That's about it on the negative side!
On the positive side, after two years and thousands of shots, it's still ticking and consistently taking good quality images. It's a great size - easily fits in a pocket. The different settings definitely work to counteract unusual lighting.
Bottom line: It's no DSLR, but it delivers consistent quality in a small size. I only can hope that Pentax's new offerings (it's now June 2005), like the Pentax Optio S4i, are similar in quality.

Very compact and easy to use (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

While I find the camera to be very compact and easy to use I have been disappointed with the picture quality. I take a lot of scenery shots and in most cases while not grainy shots seem to have a slight haze over them so the definition never seems as good as I expected from a 4 Mega Pixel unit? Perhaps I am doing something wrong and can correct this?

Great camera, but awful software (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

I've bought my Pentax camera while I was living in Canada and I was completely in love with my camera. When I moved back to Brazil, I tried several times to install the software, but it's incompatible with Windows that are in English. I've tried to contact Pentax - both international, Canadian, American and Brazilian, but they just can't solve my problem. Now I'm really sad and disappointed with the camera because, although I love it, I just can't transfer the pictures to my computer
